    Extractions: About albert bierstadt! Albert Bierstadt was among the most energetic, industrious, and internationally honored American artists of the nineteenth century. He is perhaps best known for his spectacular paintings of western scenery, which were widely exhibited in the United States and abroad. After 1880, his reputation substantially declined in the face of changing tastes. Yet neither his public demeanor nor the plenitude of his artistic creativity was seriously hampered until the last years of his life. The sometimes uneven quality of his work, the stagey compositional effects to which he frequently resorted, and his sheer productivity tempted late-nineteenth-century writers and some twentieth-century observers to criticize him harshly.

    Extractions: Albert Bierstadt is best known for his huge, panoramic landscapes of the then-unsettled west. He was born in Germany, and was two years old when his family emigrated to America and settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Beginning in 1859, he made three trips west, each time making oil sketches on paper. When he returned to his New York studio, he used these sketches and oil studies to paint detailed panoramic views of Western scenery. His paintings emphasized the spectacular landscapes, sometimes exaggerating what he had seen. I have admired the work of Albert Bierstadt for seveal years, but haven't sufficient space in my home to display more than a few prints. So, I created this section of my website as a tribute to his work. Though there are nearly 400 paintings displayed on these "gallery walls," this is not intended to be a complete nor definitive collection of his works.     Extractions: died Feb. 19, 1902 , New York, N.Y., U.S. American artist who painted landscapes and whose tremendous popularity was based on his panoramic scenes of the American West. Among the last generation of painters associated with the Hudson River school , Bierstadt, like Frederick Church and Thomas Moran, covered vast distances in search of more exotic subject matter. His reputation was made by the huge canvases that resulted from his several trips to the Far Westóe.g., ì The Rocky Mountains î (1863; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City) and ìMount Corcoranî (c. 1875?77; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.). Executed in his studio in New York, the large works do not have the freshness and spontaneity of the small on-the-spot paintings from which they were produced. They are, however, immense in scale and grandiose in effect. Bierstadt freely altered details of landscape to create the effect of awe and grandeur. His colours were applied more according to a formula than from observation: luscious, green vegetation, ice-blue water, and pale, atmospheric blue-green mountains. The progression from foreground to background was often a dramatic one without the softness and subtlety of a middle distance.
