Extractions: Encyclopaedia Britannica (1844-1926) The daughter of an affluent Pittsburgh businessman, whose French ancestry had endowed him with a passion for that country, she studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and then travelled extensively in Europe, finally settling in Paris in 1874. In that year she had a work accepted at the Salon and in 1877 made the acquaintance of Degas , with whom she was to be on close terms throughout his life. His art and ideas had a considerable influence on her own work; he introduced her to the Impressionists and she participated in the exhibitions of 1879, 1880, 1881 and 1886, refusing to do so in 1882 when Degas did not. She was a great practical support to the movement as a whole, both by providing direct financial help and by promoting the works of Impressionists in the USA, largely through her brother Alexander. Biografía Mary Cassatt era hija de un banquero norteamericano que nunca se mostró favorable a su deseo de llevar una carrera artística. Toda la familia Cassatt se trasladó a París en 1851, viviendo algunos años en Alemania. En 1861 Mary estudia en la Pennsylvannia Academy of Fine Arts de Filadelfia durante cuatro años, donde obtendrá un acento académico que llevará consigo a París cuando en 1868 esté en el taller de Chaplin, aunque tampoco influyera este pintor académico excesivamente en su estilo. En estos años encontramos en ella cierta atracción hacia la pintura de Courbet. Inicia un viaje por Italia en 1871, descubriendo una profunda admiración por Velázquez y Rembrabdt lo que le motivará a viajar a España y a Holanda. Instalada definitivamente en París en 1877, se inicia su relación con Degas - algunos la llegan a considerar como su alumna - quien le recomienda integrarse en el grupo impresionista.

The Cassatt family was affluent and cultured: Mary's father was a stockbroker, while her mother, who came from an old established Pennsylvania family, was an accomplished woman who spoke French and read widely, and provided Mary with an excellent example to follow. It is, perhaps, no accident that so many of the women in Mary Cassatt's paintings are engaged in simple, self-contained tasks like reading or sewing, since these were the everyday activities of the Cassatt household.

Interestingly, she and her younger brother Gardner seem more interested in the artist than the chess game between brother Robbie and her father. Gardner was abot 5 years old and Robbie abour 12. Perhaps the artist most associated with wonderful images of childhood is the American impressionist artist Mary Cassatt. Mary was the daughter of an affluent Pittsburgh businessman, whose French ancestry had inspired him with a passion for his ancestrial home. It was natural therefore that Mary, with her interest in art, would be drawn to France. As much as we admire Cassatt's work, we have not given her great attention in HBC. This is primarily because she primarily focused on very young children in non descript clothing or infants being bathed. As a result, they often do not include depictions of period clothing in which we are primarily interested. There are, however, a few interesting images of older children in period clothes. Mary's father was an affluent Pittsburgh businessman from a respectable, conservative family. His ancestors were French and he had a passionate attraction for the land of his ancestors.
