    Extractions: Self-portrait with the Yellow Christ Paul Gauguin began to paint late, at 25 years of age, but painting became all his life. For painting he left his wife and children and quit his profitable post of clerk. Gauguin was full of inner contradictions and complicated in his behaviour. His life was filled with arduous work, militant commitments at the expense of his friends, chimerical dreaming, short-lived happiness, the painful and glorious satisfaction of a man who knows that he has defined his own freedom, that he is animated by a spirit that cannot be taken from him. In quest for different life Gauguin went in 1891 to Tahiti. He spent there his last years, which were both very difficult and very happy. From this period of his life descend artist's most famous works. Paul Gauguin was the Post-Impressionist, but his simple brushwork and intensely contrastive colours largely retain the Impressionist approach to three-dimensionality through shadow, patches of light and an extensive use of green.

For this slide set 120 important works were selected by the faculty of the History of Art Department at the University of Michigan and by the curators of the collection.     Extractions: FROM FIVE AMERICAN MUSEUMS The Carnegie Musuem of Art, the Minneapolis Insitute of Arts, the Nelson-Atkins Musuem of Art, the Saint Louis Art Musuem, and the Toledo Musuem of Art collectively organized a traveling exhibition of Impressionist paintings, drawing from their own outstanding collections. The exhibition traveled to each museum from November 4, 1989 through November 25, 1990. With the exception of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the University of Michigan Slide Distribution has already photographed the collections of the participating museums. The slide sets from these institutions include forty-one of the paintings in the exhibition. This new set is a selection of thirty-eight impressionist and post-impressionist paintings with forty-two details previously not available through the UMSD.

"It is in the same spirit of discovery that WHYY helps re-examine the work of a pioneer, 90 years after his death." Cézanne was born in Aix, a provincial town in southern France. He enrolled in art school against the wishes of his father, a tyrannical figure who hoped his son would study law. In his early twenties, Cézanne joined his boyhood friend Émile Zola in Paris. If in Aix, his countrymen called his art "clumsy and amateurish," in Paris, his "violent and aggressive" early paintings of rape and murder were considered to be in bad taste. He was the ultimate outsider, no matter where he lived.
