Asher Brown Durand Asher Brown Durand (1796-1886), the son of a watchmaker and silversmith, served a five year apprenticeship to an engraver, Peter Maverick, in Newark New Jersey. After completing his appreticeship, he became a partner in the business. His reputation as an engraver was firmly established with the publication of his engraving after John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence in 1823. Between 1821 and 1831 Durand helped found the New York Drawing Association (1825), the National Academy of Design (1826), and the Sketch Club (1827). Also during this period, he formed a partnership with his brother, Cyrus, and Charles C. Wright which specialized in the production of bank notes. In 1832 Durand dissolved his profitable engraving business and entered into a short, successful period as a portrait painter. A financial panic in 1837 combined with encouragement from Thomas Cole led him to try landscape painting. He became the second president of the National Academy of Design in 1845, a position he held until his resignation in 1861. In 1847 he helped found the Century Association.

The son of a watchmaker and silversmith of Huguenot descent, in 1812 Durand began his artistic training in Newark The Declaration of Independence, completed in 1823. Other engraving commissions followed. In association with his brother, Cyrus, Durand also engraved items such as bank-note vignettes, business cards, lottery tickets, and diplomas. After moving to New York City at the age of 29, Durand began a long association with various artist's organizations. He was a founding member of the New York Drawing Association (1825) as well as the National Academy of Design (1826), where in addition to serving as second president (1846-1861), he continued to exhibit engravings, landscapes, portraits, and history paintings in the Academy's annual exhibitions until 1874. In 1835, Durand was commissioned by the New York art patron, Luman Reed, to paint likenesses of the first seven United States presidents from George Washington to Andrew Jackson. Durand copied portraits by Gilbert Stuart of the first five presidents, but painted Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams from life. In the same year, Durand ended his engraving career in order to devote himself full time to painting. Although he became a successful painter of portraits, figure studies, and history paintings, Durand devoted the major portion of his career to landscape painting, becoming an important force in the development of America's

He established a reputation by his engravings of Trumbull's Signing of the Declaration of Independence, followed by a series of engraved portraits of eminent contemporaries. After 1835, Durand devoted himself to painting, producing portraits of several of the Presidents. After a year of travel and study in Europe, he turned to landscape painting, becoming a leader of the Hudson River school . At first he was painstaking and meticulous, but later his rendering became more spontaneous. Examples of his work are In the Woods and The Beeches (Metropolitan Mus.); Woodland Brook and Franconia Notch (N.Y. Public Library); and Mountain Forest (Corcoran Gall.). Durand was a founder of the National Academy of Design, New York City, and its president from 1845 to 1861. Two of his allegorical paintings are there, Morning of Life and Evening of Life.

Extractions: See also: Hudson River School VIEW IMAGE LIST "Asher Brown Durand was born in Jefferson Village (now Maplewood), New Jersey, the eighth of eleven children. His frail health exempted him from working on the family farm; instead, he helped his father, a watchmaker and silversmith. Following an apprenticeship to engraver Peter Maverick from 1812 to 1817, Durand entered into full partnership with Maverick and ran the New York branch of the Newark-based firm. The partnership dissolved in 1820 in a dispute concerning Durand's acceptance of John Trumbull's commission to engrave The Declaration of Independence , which Durand had apparently taken on without deferring to Maverick's position as senior partner. (Maverick, who interpreted the act as a violation of their partnership agreement, heatedly accused Durand of trying to sabotage his career.) The completion of the work in 1823 established Durand's reputation as one of the country's finest engravers. An active member of the New York art community, Durand was instrumental in organizing the New-York Drawing Association in 1825 (later the National Academy of Design, which he served as president from 1845 to 1861) and the Sketch Club in 1829 (later the Century Association). During the late 1820s and early 1830s, when his interest gradually shifted from engraving to oil painting, he demonstrated a growing competence in portraiture and genre subjects. With the encouragement of his friend and patron Luman Reed, Durand ended his engraving career in 1835.

Extractions: Gift of Oliver B. James About the Artist The Hunter , attributed to Asher B. Durand, is an example of the work of the artists of the Hudson River School who painted the American landscape, particularly that of New York and the Hudson River, in the mid-nineteenth century. The artists in this group, Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, John Frederick Kensett, Albert Bierstadt, Jasper Cropsey, Asher B. Durand, and others, shared a similar philosophy about nature and art. They believed that landscape paintings should be truthful in the representation of natural details, yet should also communicate ideas and emotions through the use of light and composition. In The Hunter , the landscape is naturalistic, but it is also carefully composed to enhance the psychological effect of the scene. The figure who wades through the stream looks small and unimposing compared to the waterfall in the background, the quickly flowing stream, and the large rocks. The gray, cloud-filled sky adds a further sense of drama to the scene by suggesting a coming storm. Nature is clearly the subject of this painting. The artist might have included the small figure to emphasize humanity's humble relationship to nature and to the sense of awe one finds in the beauty of the natural world.
