Extractions: Edouard Manet was born into the ranks of the Parisian bourgeoisie on January 29, 1832. His Mother, Eugenie-Desiree Fournier, was a woman of refinement and god daughter of Charles Bernadotte, the Crown Prince of Sweden. Edouard's father, Auguste Manet, was a magistrate and judge who hoped that Edouard would someday follow in his footsteps, but Edouard was destined to follow another path. Although well educated, Manet did not particularly excel within the academic environment but he showed a propensity toward drawing and the arts. His Uncle Charles Fournier encouraged Manet's appreciation for the arts and often took him and his childhood friend, Antonin Proust, on outings to the Louvre. In 1850 after serving in the merchant marines, Manet entered the studio of Thomas Couture where he studied until 1856. He was influenced by the old masters, particulary Velazquez and Goya , but Manet reasoned that ones art should reflect ideas and ideals of the present rather then the past. So disagreeing with Diderot's theory that great art only reflected the costume of the past, Manet sought instead to follow the advice of Baudelaire...to depict a contemporary realism, to be "

Extractions: (audio available) (audio available) next room back to French Painting of the 19th century It is hard to image a time when Paris was without broad, tree-lined streets or when the life of the city did not interest French artists. Yet this was the case in 1850 when Edouard Manet began to study painting. Young artists could expect to succeed only through the official Academy exhibitions known as Salons, whose conservative juries favored biblical and mythological themes and a polished technique. Within twenty-five years, however, both Paris and painting had a new look. Urban renovations had opened the wide avenues and parks we know today, and painting was transformed when artists abandoned the transparent glazes and blended brushtrokes of the past and turned their attention to life around them. Contemporary urban subjects and a bold style, which offered paint on the canvas as something to be admired in itself, gave their art a strong new sense of the present. (continue)

Tres tot, sous l'impulsion de son oncle qui l'emmene dans les musees, Edouard Manet execute ses premiers dessins et realise de nombreuses copies. Plutot que d'entreprendre des etudes de droit comme le souhaitait son pere, Manet s'inscrit au concours de l'Ecole Navale. Apres deux echecs, son pere consent enfin a ce qu'il se consacre a la peinture. Il entre alors a l'atelier Couture ou il restera six ans. Tres vite, Manet entre en conflit avec son maitre et critique la peinture d'histoire. Son pere le contraint cependant a rester dans l'atelier. Vers 24 ans Manet, grace a l'argent de son pere, voyage beaucoup et decouvre l'Italie, l'Allemagne, l'Autriche et la Hollande. Il quitte definitivement l'atelier apres avoir montre a Couture un tableau qu'il vient de peindre Le Buveur d'absinthe et que Couture critique fortement. Il commence alors a voir quelques unes de ses toiles exposees et frequente d'autres artistes - Baudelaire, Zola, le photographe Nadar, les peintres

Für die Malerei der Moderne ist Manet tatsächlich eine der Schlüsselfiguren, neben den Malern der Schule von Barbizon oder Courbet, die auf ihre Art die ersten Breschen in die traditionsverhaftete Salonmalerei schlugen. Sie sind mit einzelnen Werken in der Ausstellung zitiert. Im Gegensatz zu ihnen war Manet der Maler des Pariser Stadtlebens. Das Großbürgertum seiner eigenen Umgebung porträtierte er ebenso wie die Randständigen. Mit neuartigen Motiven und einem eigenwilligen Individualstil sorgte er, darin Courbet ähnlich, immer wieder für öffentliche Kontroversen. Sein Malstil ist nicht revolutionär, eher evolutionär. Tizian, Rubens, Goya, Velázquez oder Delacroix waren die Bezugsgrößen, an die er anknüpfte und deren Errungenschaften er weiterentwickelte.

Respinto agli esami, decise di iniziare la carriera artistica. Dal 1850 al 1856 studiò presso il pittore accademico Couture, pur non condividendone gli insegnamenti. Viaggiò molto in Italia, Olanda, Germania, Austria, studiando soprattutto i pittori che avevano scelto il linguaggio tonale quali Giorgione, Tiziano, gli olandesi del Seicento, Goya e Velazquez. Notevole influenza ebbe sulla definizione del suo stile anche la conoscenza delle stampe giapponesi. Nellarte giapponese, infatti, il problema della simulazione tridimensionale viene quasi sempre ignorato, risolvendo la figurazione solo con la linea di contorno sul piano bidimensionale. Manet è stato un pittore poco incline alle posizioni avanguardistiche. Egli voleva giungere al rinnovamento della pittura operando allinterno delle istituzioni accademiche. E, per questo motivo, egli, pur essendo il primo dei pittori moderni, non espose mai con gli altri pittori impressionisti. Rimase sempre su posizione individuale e solitaria anche quando i suoi quadri non furono più accettati dalla giuria del Salon. Le sue prime opere non ebbero problemi ad essere accettate. La rottura con la critica avvenne solo dopo il 1863, quando Manet propose il quadro «La colazione sullerba». In questa tela sono già evidenti i germi dellimpressionismo. Manet aveva abbandonato del tutto gli strumenti classici del chiaroscuro e della prospettiva per proporre un quadro realizzato con macchie di colori puri e stesi uniformemente. In esso, tuttavia, locchio riesce a cogliere una simulazione spaziale precisa se osservato ad una distanza non ravvicinata.

Manet nace en París el 23 de enero de 1832; su padre, Auguste, era jefe de personal del Ministerio de Justicia y su madre, Eugénie-Désirée, era hija de un diplomático, es decir, formaba parte de una familia alto burguesa. Sus primeros pasos artísticos los daría a temprana edad, cuando inicia su etapa escolar. Será su tío materno, Edmond-Edouard Fournier, quien le enseñe las primeras nociones y acompañe al pequeño Edouard y a su inseparable amigo Antonin Proust al Museo del Louvre . Pero los niños prefieren dibujar las cabezas de sus compañeros de clase a tener modelos inanimados, por lo que el curso de dibujo en el que se han matriculado les decepciona bastante. Acabados los estudios en el colegio Rollin, el padre de Manet desea que su hijo inicie la carrera judicial para llegar a ser un prestigioso abogado. Pero Edouard prefiere presentarse al examen de ingreso en la Academia Naval, donde es rechazado. Su deseo de navegar es tan grande que se alista en un buque mercante, en el que llegará hasta Río de Janeiro. De regreso a París, intenta nuevamente ingresar en la Academia Naval, obteniendo el mismo resultado. Ese mismo año vuelve a visitar Italia - había estado en Florencia en 1853 - viajando también por Holanda, Alemania y Austria.

Tra essi figurano, oltre Baudelaire e Zola, i principali esponenti dell'impressionismo: Nadar, Degas, Monet, Renoir e Pissaro, che considerano Manet figura di riferimento per le sue intuizioni artistiche. Più tardi conosce B. Morisot, che fa anche posare per il suo quadro "Il balcone".
