Maxfield Parrish is such an artist. Fred Maxfield Parrish (MP to his family, friends and close associates) was born July 25, 1870 in Philadelphia to Stephen Parrish, a well known artist and etcher and his wife Elizabeth Bancroft Parrish. Young Maxfield was a descendant of generations of beloved Philadelphia Quaker physicians. His father Stephen had been the first to break away from medicine or pharmacy and into the bohemian world of the professional artist. Young Parrish had all the advantages that his comfortably well-off family could offer, including summer painting trips with his father visiting the major museums of Europe during his teens. He and Stephen remained close all their lives and were warmly devoted to one another. Fortunately there are a lot of good sources of information about him, the best of which is definitely Alma Gilbert's Maxfield Parrish Masterworks (the second edition of which has an appendix with several previously unavailable works). Pomegranate Artbooks also (Box 6099, Rohnert Park, California 94927) publishes a book of postcards of Parrish's paintings as well as cards, calendars, and other such things featuring works by Parrish and other great artists.

    Extractions: Frederick Parrish was born into a long established Quaker family in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1870. He adopted the family name "Maxfield" as his professional name some years later. His upbringing was one of privilege, tempered by the artistic spirit of his father, Stephen Parrish, an accomplished landscape artist. In the 1880's the Parrish family traveled extensively throughout Europe. After spending some time at Haverford College, young Parrish attended the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1891 through 1894. His first public exhibitions began in this period and he received acclaim from professors, fellow students and the local press. Following his career at the Academy of the Fine Arts he studied with famous illustrator Howard Pyle. Parrish painted not only for the popular press and contemporary novelists, but received commissions for murals in some of America's wealthiest homes. By the 1920's he began illustrating for the burgeoning advertising industry as well. Later in life he produced numerous works for Brown and Bigelow's calendars and greeting card lines.
