He lived away from Paris, in chronic financial difficulty, despite the support of art dealers, friendly critics and wealthy collectors. It wasn't until after his death that glory came through critics and collectors. And yet Sisley's works hold only a modest place in the history of Impressionism, and in relation to the other great names of the movement.

After his schooldays, his father, a merchant trading with the southern states of America, sent him to London for a business career, but finding this unpalatable, Sisley returned to Paris in 1862 with the aim of becoming an artist. His family gave him every support, sending him to Gleyre's studio, where he met Renoir, Monet and Bazille. He spent some time painting in Fontainebleau, at Chailly with Monet, Bazille and Renoir, and later at Marlotte with Renoir. His style at this time was deeply influenced by Courbet and Daubigny, and when he first exhibited at the Salon in 1867 it was as the pupuil of Corot. By this time, however, he had started to frequent the CafÊ Guerbois, and was becoming more deeply influenced by the notions which were creating Impressionism. During the Franco-Prussian war and the period of the Commune, he spent some time in London and was introduced to Durand-Ruel by Pissarro, becoming part of that dealer's stable. In the mean time, his father had lost all his money as a result of the war, and Sisley, with a family to support, was reduced to a state of penury, in which he was to stay until virtually the end of his life.

Of the artists who exhibited at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, it was Alfred Sisley who was the purest landscape painter. In an oeuvre of almost 900 oil paintings he produced less than a dozen still lifes and only one or two genre scenes. All of his remaining works are landscapes, and throughout his career he favored the same kind of environment whether in the forest of Fontainebleau, in Louveciennes, London, Moret, or Wales. His works tend to be calm with little attention paid to cityscapes or recent industrialization. They are often devoid of people, any figures or staffage in them being used as compositional devices or perhaps narrative elements rather than as a means of representing a humanized landscape.

Once in Ferrara, it's impossible to miss the 1493 Palazzo dei Diamanti (Palace of Diamonds) named after the 8,500 diamond-shaped pink marble blocks that clad its external walls. Now one of the most prestigious European art centers, the Palazzo dei Diamanti is about to open with the first ever Italian exhibition of works by the Impressionist Alfred Sisley, opening Feb. 17, 2002. The show, which is organized chronologically, is a joint effort of Ferrara Arte with the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. About Sisley, Matisse is said to have remarked, "A Cézanne is a moment in the artist's life; a Sisley is a moment in nature." In fact, Sisley's lyricism has its roots in the painting of the English artist John Constable, whom Sisley deeply admired. Sisley remained faithful to both Impressionism and to nature throughout his life, never abandoning his "luminous and light colours, applied with short and definite brush strokes, intended to capture instants of moist light or breezy air." The art critic Camille Mauclair said of Sisley's landscapes from the 1870s and '80s, "He's the painter of the wide blue rivers of the blooming fruit orchards... of the French skies."
