Wer war Vincent van Gogh überhaupt? Vincent van Gogh (sprich: van Choch) lebte von 1853 bis 1890. Er wurde in den Niederlanden geboren, verbrachte aber einen großen Teil seines Lebens in Frankreich, wo auch die meisten seiner Werke entstanden. Da er heute als einer der berühmtesten Maler überhaupt gilt (seine "Sonnenblumen" wurden vor ein paar Jahren für einige Millionen Mark an eine japanische Versicherungsgesellschaft verkauft), ist es schwierig, sich vorzustellen, daß er während seines ganzen Lebens an Armut und Krankheit litt. Sein vier Jahre jüngerer Bruder Theo, zu dem er ein sehr enges Verhältnis hatte, arbeitete als Kunsthändler in Paris und stellte ihm Farben und Pinsel zur Verfügung. Im Gegenzug dazu schickte Vincent ihm seine Bilder, deren Verkauf die Beträge decken sollte, die Theo für Vincents Malzubehör ausgab. Doch solange Vincent lebte, verkauften sich seine Bilder schlecht. Erst kurz nach seinem Tod im Alter von 37 Jahren wurde sein Talent erkannt, was ihm selber natürlich nichts mehr nützte.

Vincent's mental instability is legend. He attempted to take Paul Gauguin's life and later committed himself to several asylums in hopes of an unrealized cure. Van Gogh painted furiously and "The Starry Night" vibrates with rockets of burning yellow while planets gyrate like cartwheels. The hills quake and heave, yet the cosmic gold fireworks that swirl against the blue sky are somehow restful. This painting is probably the most popular of Vincent's works. The notes above are from a card supplied with a painted coffee cup which D.Wells received in December 1993 as a Christmas present. This version of the image was copied in July 1994 by Daniel Egret from Le WebLouvre . 'The Starry Night' is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which has a Web page on the painting (including an excellent JPEG of it). "He is a romantic and I am rather inclined to a primitive state." The tense friendship and unspoken rivalry between these two great avant-garde artists, and the creative sparks that flew between them during the two months in 1888 they spent living and working together in van Gogh's little Yellow House in the Provençal town of Arles, produced works that helped set the stage for much of what we know today as modern art. The mutual influence and interaction between these two opinionated artists are the focus of a stunning and comprehensive new exhibition organized jointly by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. "Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South" (which is on view at the Art Institute through January 13, 2002, before traveling to the Van Gogh Museum in February) features many of the key pictures upon which these two artists' reputations rest, including van Gogh's The Bedroom and several versions of his Sunflowers , along with Gauguin's Human Miseries and Vision of the Sermon . The curators of the show have pieced together an almost day-to-day picture of the pair's collaboration, documenting their subjects, their styles, and the paintings they worked on side by side. "It's exciting," says Louis van Tilborgh, curator of paintings and sculpture at the Van Gogh Museum, "because this gives us a chance to see these two treating the same subjects at virtually the same time."

The two artists wrote often to one another, friends, and relatives. Van Gogh's most frequent correspondent was his brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris in the late 1880s. The quotations reveal that both men were avid chroniclers of the subjects they painted: peasants, townspeople, landscapes, and houses. The painters' candid remarks about their own canvases, most of which had either just been completed or were still in progress, offer unique perspectives on the Arles period. They also refer to a number of works painted before and after the artists' time together.

Help All articles in this series Artist: Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a social radical whose encounter with impressionism through his art dealer brother Theo enabled him to create an art at once sensual and compassionate. His genius was literary as well as visual (his letters constitute one of the greatest 19th-century novels) and, prior to his going to Paris in 1886, his idea of himself as an artist was formed as much by his reading of socially critical authors, especially Charles Dickens and George Eliot, as by his reverence for the rural painter Millet. Teaching himself to draw and paint while living a marginal life in Holland, he rejected the bourgeois art of portraiture and romantic narrative in favour of a raw scrutiny of nature and of peasants scratching a living from the hard cold ground. On the eve of his discovering impressionism, Van Gogh saw himself as a painter of peasant life - a simple-hearted, popular alternative to the urban painter-flaneur whom Baudelaire characterised as the painter of modern life. "By continually observing peasant life, at all hours of the day," he wrote to Theo, "I have become so involved in it that I rarely think of anything else."

July 29, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris), generally considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt ; he powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. His work, all of it produced during a period of only 10 years, hauntingly conveys through its striking colour, coarse brushwork, and contoured forms the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide.
