Il est surtout reconnu pour ses natures mortes, ses peintures de genre et ses pastels. La Raie1728 (114 × 146 cm)Musée du Louvre (Paris)Jean Siméon Chardin naît à Paris le 2 novembre 1699, d'un père artisan, fabricant de billards. Mis à part le fait qu'il a été l'élève de Cazes (peintre d'Histoire) et qu'il a peut-être été conseillé par Noël Nicolas Coypel, on n'a aucune certitude à propos de sa formation avant le 6 février 1724, date à laquelle il est reçu à l'Académie de Saint-Luc avec le titre de maître - titre auquel il renonça en 1729. D'après les frères Goncourt, Coypel aurait fait appel à Chardin pour peindre un fusil dans un tableau de chasse, ce qui lui aurait donné le goût pour les natures mortes. Il est probable que deux de ses tableaux, la Raie et le Buffet aient été remarqués par deux membres de l'Académie royale à l'Exposition de la Jeunesse, place Dauphine, en 1728 : Louis Boulongne, Premier Peintre du Roi, et Nicolas de Largillière un des meilleurs peintres français de natures mortes. Ces deux tableaux sont les morceaux de réception de Chardin à l'Académie royale, et se trouvent à présent au musée du Louvre.
