Monet A Retrospective
This book came water damaged from the supplier. It is ok but not to the level that I expected.It did not have several of the paintings that I was looking for such as the irises which is world famous. Also it did not have the painting showing the red boats in the harbour, another famous painting.I did order another book on Monet's gardens which was considerably better.

Good in parts
The book opens with a chronology of about 15 pages and a short introduction. The remainder of the text comprises a vast array of contemporary reports and commentaries on Monet from news media and other sources by a numerous writers. These do make fascinating reading; the wide range of writers includes among others critics, philosophers and statesmen, and among these are some notable names such as Proust, Maupassant and Zola; the comments range from ridicule to praise. They run according the publishers, chronologically from 1865, but that is a very loose description for the sequence is far from consecutive. Usefully reference to colour plates is provided in the margin alongside the relevant text. The book includes an index.

It is illustrated throughout with 132 colour plates and 119 monochromes. The colour reproduction generally is acceptable, but there are a number of images that are noticeably dark with little detail evident in the darkest areas. The monochrome images are not so good; typical of poor quality offset-litho the images are too dark with large areas of solid black entirely lacking detail. The colour plates each occupy a page, although due to the book format some paintings may occupy no more than half the page. This problem has been overcome with a few of the very wide Water Lily paintings by employing fold out pages. A very wide range of Monet's work is covered.

Overall production does not impress, the presentation in some sections is crude, and it is badly let down by the quality of the monochrome images. It is a big and heavy book, and the large format does allow for many of Monet's paintings to be reproduced to a reasonable size; it is worth having for the colour reproductions and the interesting text.

A Must Own if You Love Monet
This is a large, heavy and durable book that brings you a great portrayal of Claude Monet, with wonderful pictures both in color and black and white, along with interesting and intimate commentary about his life during the time he created his paintings. One of the full color pictures is of "Green Reflections" where the picture is over 27 feet (847 cm) long.

The back of the book has an in depth index of paintings, colleagues, associations, museums, and the names of Monet's paintings.

It's Grrrreat!!
I saw this book in my local bookstore and immediatly snatched it up! It got a TON of paintings done by Monet, most of them in color. Good reproductions, interesting ideas
I am a painter who wanted to do a series of paintings for an upcoming exhibit. I got this book to see if it would stimulate some interesting ideas. Given the plethora of poorly illustrated books on Monet I was pleasantly surprised by the reproductions. A few I had never seen before and others I had never seen with their accompanying series paintings. Most of the reproductions are quite large, which I appreciate, and the colors are rich and seem accurate. I haven't read the text straight through but skimmed various sections and the ideas presented are very stimulating and fill in the gaps regarding Monet's motivations for painting in a series.

If you are a painter who feels drawn to doing series this book will prove invaluable. This book is also my best book of Monet's reproductions (admittedly I am still searching for the ultimate Monet book, one with lots of large, incredible reproductions. We bought several books in this series before I realized I just don't like them that much
Can't fault the art, it's a great way to introduce kids to Monet.

And the text... well, I can take it or leave it. It sounds trite to my ears, though, so I prefer to leave it.

The really bad part about these books is that they're cheaply made. I've had them fall apart on me while other books that we've had longer and that we read more often are in great shape.

You can't have a poor-quality board book, it just doesn't work.

I can't in good conscience recommend these books to anybody because of that.

Beautiful Book for Babies
The art is beautiful and the rhyming prose is well written and entertaining.This was our favorite book in the Mini Masters series.

We have all books from this series and all of them are amazing. Wonderful and simple poems (not child rhymes), and beautiful pictures. Lovely books for quite times with your child. It's reallyand excellent way to introduce art to your child.

Awesome art book for little ones!!
As an art lover I was so excited to see this book and the others in the series.This one is my favorite, not only because I LOVE Monet, but because the rhymes are well written and go great with the paintings!!This book is a great way to share your love of art with little ones.This is my favorite baby gift to give at showers!!My four year old still gets it out and asks about the paintings and we try to read it together!!!

Excellent for elementary art education or homeschool
These books are excellent for elementary students.They are easy to read and easy to follow.They are filled with lots of examples of the artists work and ideas for kids to try.They incorporate the history of art during each artists life and who influenced them.
