Extractions: October 1997 Bloom's day, I In the mid-1950s I was a student of Allan Bloom, PhB'49, AM'53, PhD'55 ("Bloom in Review," August/97), not on the quads but at the Downtown Center on Dearborn Street. I had finagled my way into the Basic Program for Adults-a program for mature professionals seeking roundtable discussions. I was a 20-year-old South Side Irish Catholic, a blue-collar worker, a graduate of a trade school who convinced the faculty that I might belong in such a program. On Saturday mornings, Allan Bloom and his colleagues would open with intellectual intimidation-perhaps silence, or a question that seemed opaque-but, more often than not, I-the wise fool-would break the ice. What would ensue was mental wrestling. At the end of the mornings, Lucy's expressed sympathy for Charlie Brown after an especially brutal day would have been most apt: "Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose." The class's could have been Charlie's response: "That would be so nice!" I don't think any one of us ever left a Bloom seminar feeling superior to those who would be our children and grandchildren-today's students. I do think we enjoyed not only a passion for reading but also the tough wrestling with ideas-and the erotic equivalent that comes from intense discussion of the ideas found in the "big" books.

Book of the Week: (1/5/2002) Allan Bloom: The Closing of the American Mind evisiting this book after more than a decade was an odd experience, akin to re-reading one's diary and wondering what kind of person you had been to write such things. I was introduced to Closing of the American Mind in English class, one where I was pitted against the rest of the class as the sole voice of reason (me, the voice of reason; you're all in trouble now!) I loved it: I must've felt like Bloom did when he penned the book, being the sole Apollo guarding the temple against the centaurs crashing in. Thinking back on such feelings now, I understand all too well how it was possible to take the book far more seriously than it deserved to be. Mr. Bloom had written a book that was full of both brilliance and chicanery, and the most distressing thing was how it oscillated wildly between them sometimes in the same sentences. At the time, I was 18 and far more easily persuaded by what sounded like a good argument than I am now at 30.

Extractions: This book contains a comprehensive exposition of Allan Bloom's views on education and expands on the view he expresses in his long introduction to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Emile or On Education . One need only read "Emile" to discover the truth of Bloom's statement that a reading of original texts allows one to form a vital understanding of issues that a reading of shallow rehashes of such texts does not. Bloom discusses in this book two types of Openness, how he proposes to re-invigorate college curriculum, and how his suggestion to use original texts [Great Books] is vilified by the Three great parts of the University today, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. A paradoxical aspect of Bloom's book is that he deals with two forms of openness and goes on to show how what is called openness in the first form actually amounts to a "closing of the mind". West The Closing of the American Mind is a diagnosis of the intellectual ills of our day, and, if it is not a prescription, it contains at least some suggestions for a cure. The book is most sound, I will argue, in its description of current pathologies. It is partly sound, partly unsound in its account of their origin. It is least sound in its prescription for their healing. Bloom begins by examining the students in our prestige universities, and he finds them deficient in moral formation, in reading of serious books, in musical tastes, and above all in eros. They have no love in their souls, no longing for anything high or great. Their minds are empty, their characters weak, and their bodies sated with rock and roll and easy sex. These students come equipped with a simple-minded relativism that is quick to close off all discussion with the tag, "Who’s to say what’s right and wrong?" Their relativism justifies an easygoing openness to everything, an openness which expresses their incapacity for being serious about anything. Their proclaimed openness, in fact, turns out to be a dogmatic closedness toward moral virtue no less than toward real thoughtfulness. They are "spiritually detumescent."

His complaints were reported Friday by the Army Times, a private newspaper that covers Army issues. The Times obtained a copy of an e-mail Van Riper sent to colleagues explaining why he had quit. (From yesterday's Washington Post article, " Ex-General Says Wargames Were Rigged " by Robert Burns.) A spokesman for the Joint Forces Command said there is "no record" of Riper having quit. You'd think someone might remember one way or the other, but UO supposes it doesn't do to inquire too closely about these things.

Extractions: -Saul Bellow Ravelstein Saul Bellow's affectionate roman a clef about the renowned professor Allan Bloom, author of the surprise bestseller The Closing of the American Mind : How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy and Impoverished the Souls of Today's Students Allan Bloom 1930-1992), stirred up quite a ruckus, because it revealed to the public (it was apparently well known to his friends, students, and colleagues) that Bloom was a homosexual who had died of AIDs, not liver failure has had been pronounced the cause of death. Yet in the novel, Bloom (Abe Ravelstein) specifically requires of Bellow (Chick) that he write a memoir of him when he is gone and since Ravelstein is honest to a fault, especially with his friends, it's hard to imagine that Bloom would have objected to Bellow merely being truthful. More importantly, Bloom's homosexualitywell, really the early and unnecessary death that his homosexuality caused, ''destroyed by his reckless sex habits", is how Chick puts itis the mystery that lies at the core of the book. There would be no tension to the book without it and without our expectation that Bellow will eventually unravel the mystery, and the ultimate failure of the book is that he never does, perhaps can not.
