Brown's Life and Career John Edgar Tidwell S terling Allen Brown was born on May 1901 into some have called the "smug" or even "affected" respectability of Washington’s African American middle class. He grew up in the Washington world of official segregation, which engendered a contradiction between full citizenship and marginalized existence. The son of a distinguished pastor and theologian, Brown graduated with honors from the prestigious Dunbar High School in 1918. That fall, he entered Williams College on a scholarship set aside for minority students. By the time he left in 1922, he had performed spectacularly: election to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year, the Graves Prize for his essay "The Comic Spirit in Shakespeare and Moliére," the only student awarded "Final Honors" in English, and cum laude graduation with an AB degree. Modern American Poetry (1921). This anthology, more than any other single work he read, radically altered his view of art by introducing him to the New American Poetry of Edwin Arlington Robinson, Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, Vachel Lindsay, and other experimenters in melding vernacular language, democratic values, and "the extraordinary in ordinary life." The son of a professor at Howard University, Washington, D.C., Brown was educated at Williams College, Williamstown, Mass. (A.B., 1922), and Harvard University (A.M., 1923). While teaching at several schools, he began collecting folk songs and stories from blacks. The people he met also served as the subject of the poetry he then began to write. In 1929 Brown began a 40-year teaching career at Howard, and in 1932 his first volume of poetry, Southern Road, was published. Musical forms, especially ballads, work songs, spirituals, and blues, were primary influences on his work. At a time when black dialect had been distorted into a stereotype by white writers, he boldly used authentic dialect and phonetic spelling in his poems.     Extractions: Sterling A. Brown (1901-1989) Contributing Editor: John Edgar Tidwell Two problems come immediately to mind when I consider my past experiences in teaching Brown's poetry. First the relative obscurity of Brown's place in the American literary tradition is the biggest obstacle in teaching Brown because students think his presence in the syllabus requires some big justification. The second problem, ironically, is much more complicated. Because Brown is a black poet, students are quite willing to interpret his poetry in light of his "blackness," by which they generally mean hard luck, pain, and suffering imposed by "Jim Crow" laws. They are less willing to acknowledge Brown as a poet, one conscientiously crafting and representing experience in poetic form. Brown's fundamental assertion of a humanistic vision is rooted in the democratic principles of the U.S. Constitution. The way in which this assertion is set forth as compelling poetry sometimes escapes the vision of students, who often want to see him engaged in special pleading. They're often reluctant to see him in a tradition established by Robert Frost E. A. Robinson

An observer describes how this Parish Doctor negotiates a compromise between his formal training and the beliefs and expectations of his patients. He accepts their black hens and claims to have "conjuh knowledge" while providing competent care. Commentary This poem is difficult and rewarding. It helps students see how traditional practices are valid and do encourage healing.     Extractions: Sterling Brown's poem "Strong Men," from his book entitled Southern Road (1931), best celebrates the indomitable spirit of Black people in the face of racism and poverty and political exploitation. The poem captures the horrors of the Middle Passage and reflects the "idea of Black stoicism," Brown explains in Southern Road . Brown was a distinguished poet, critic, scholar, and teacher of Black life and culture. His work reveals the continuity of Black expression as well as the triumphs and failures, hopes and fears, foibles and strengths of America's Everyman. Born on May 1, 1901, in a house on Sixth and Fairmount in Washington, DC, Brown was the last of six children born to Reverend Sterling Nelson and Adelaid Allen Brown. He grew up on the campus of Howard University, where his father taught in the School of Religion. After establishing contacts with Howardites and meeting Jean Toomer (a notable writer, critic, and poet), Brown left home for Williams College to become a writer.  In 1923, a year after Brown secured a B.A. along with a Phi Beta Kappa key, he obtained his M.A. from Harvard University. Brown followed in his father's footsteps by returning to Howard to teach. During Brown's fifty-year stay at Howard University, he taught the first courses in Black literature. In those years he spent his energy interpreting and disseminating knowledge of Black culture and achievements. According to literary critic Joanne V. Gabbien, "During the 1930s and 1940s, Brown's studies of the folk experience and culture were the fullest of any in the field." In his book

He was the only son and the youngest of six children born to a former slave, Sterling Nelson Brown and Adelaide Allen. His father was pastor of the Lincoln Temple Congregational Church and professor of religion at Howard University; his mother was a graduate of Fisk University. Brown attended Dunbar High School where he was taught by Haley Douglass, grandson of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and Jessie Redmon Fauset , the novelist and founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was raised in the rich intellectural environment at Howard University where he met black scholars such as W.E.B. DuBois and Alain Locke . At home his mother inspired him by reading the works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Paul Lawrence Dunbar. In , at the age of 17, Brown received an academic scholarship to Williams College.     Extractions: Lawrence Sykes Callaloo Remembers Sterling Brown Poet Sonia Sanchez and Professor Charles Rowell Writer Sterling Brown and his better known contemporary Langston Hughes are considered by many to be the folk poets of the Harlem Renaissance. Both wrote about black life in dialect that was particular to the black communities they placed their poetry in. Hughes wrote poems primarily using the voices of the Northern, urban Blacks, Sterling Brown wrote poems inspired by the voices of the Southern, rural Blacks. Black writers before the Harlem Renaissance had difficulty getting work published that portrayed blacks as multidimensional characters the way Sterling Brown's work did.     Extractions: The Federation of Friends of the DC Public Library System with the Friends of Libraries USA (FOLUSA), during the American Library Association 1997 Mid-Winter Meeting in Washington, DC, have designated The Founders Library at Howard University a Literary Landmark in tribute to the life and writings of Sterling A. Brown. There are twenty-six FOLUSA Literary Landmark designations scattered throughout the United States. This marks the first time that the FOLUSA has designated a Literary Landmark in the nation's capital. The ceremony was held on 14 February in the Browsing Room of The Founders Library. It featured remarks by the presidents of the sponsoring organizations, dramatic reading of Brown's poetry, and musical selections. ( Program .) The participation of Howard University President, H. Patrick Swygert, along with other University officers-Dr. Antoine Garibaldi, the University Provost, and Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mr. Harry G. Robinson III-gave even greater meaning to the event. It demonstrated that Howard's libraries and research centers are central to the University's teaching, research and service programs. This Web page, a collaborative effort of The Founders Library, the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, and the English department at Howard University, is being developed as a resourceful site and gateway to information on the life and work of professor Sterling Brown. It will include a continually updated bibliography (a representative listing is featured below), essays, poems, graphic materials, and hot links to related WWW resources.
