(833 boxes, 15 scrapbooks, @500 photographs, @100 oversize items). Clark, Tom C. (Thomas Campbell), 1899-1977. Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court, 1949-1967. Born in Dallas, Texas, September 23, 1899, Clark received his law degree from the University of Texas in 1922. He joined the Justice Department in 1937 and rose through the ranks. President Truman appointed him U.S. Attorney General in 1945 and to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1949. Clark resigned from the Court in 1967 when his son Ramsey Clark was appointed Attorney General, and afterwards sat on the Courts of Appeal in all eleven U.S. Circuits and in federal district court. An advocate of improved judicial administration, Clark chaired several American Bar Association committees on judicial administration and was the first director of the Federal Judicial Center. Clark joined the Justice Dept. (1937) as a special assistant to the attorney general. He coordinated the forced wartime relocation of West Coast Japanese-Americans and headed the antitrust division before becoming Attorney General in 1945. He was noted for vigorous enforcement of antitrust laws and the introduction of the attorney general's list of subversive political organizations. He was appointed (Aug., 1949) by President Harry S. Truman to the Supreme Court bench as successor to Frank Murphy. Although his opinions on the court were generally conservative in the matter of alleged subversives, he was a frequent supporter of civil liberties. In a 1963 decision he wrote the majority opinion prohibiting the reading of the Bible in public schools. Clark retired from the court in 1967 after his son, Ramsey, was named U.S. attorney general.

Extractions: Dorn was born in rural Illinois at the start of the Great Depression, in poverty. He was educated in a one room schoolhouse, then High School (where he helped on the local newspaper) and for two years at the University of Illinois. He worked for a while at the Boeing plant in Seattle, returned to Illinois, and through his art teacher Raymond Obermayr was directed towards Black Mountain College in North Carolina where he arrived in the autumn of 1950. In 1951 he left and travelled to the Pacific Northwest, where he did manual work and met his first wife, Helene. In late 1954 they returned to Black Mountain, where he studied under Charles Olson (Dorn's first published work was the pamphlet What I See in the Maximus Poems ) and graduated in 1955 with Robert Creeley as one of his examiners. After two years of further travel the family settled in Washington state. Their life there, on the edge of poverty, is vividly portrayed in Dorn's first prose book
