Extractions: While not much is known about his life, Cunningham's work is well known in the worlds of music video, commercial, and video art. He first achieved notoriety in 1997 with the horrific and comic clip for "Come to Daddy" by Aphex Twin. In quick succession he created six memorable and highly individual clips, each borne of his ability to extract a song's subtleties and pour them into a visual form. Mr. Cunningham's commercial work have also shown a bit of his ability in developing an interesting and subtle vignette out of a small bit of script. After 17-odd clips Mr. Cunningham became a bit worn out by the process of creating a music video, and has so far not ventured to create any others, although his frequency in commercials has not reduced. Instead, it looks as if his future output will come in the form of short films. This indeed seems to be where Cunningham's full creative potential in film is realized; and this evidenced only by the two short films which we have seen: "flex" and "Monkey drummer." Film is not Chris Cunningham's only working ground though. In the past, and since he was a youth, he has been an avid sketcher, painter, sculptor, and has even picked up a bit musically, from what we can gather (he served as DJ a bit around England.) His works that we have seen have frequently focused on the anatomies of both humans and machines: their cohabitation, distortion, and creation.

John Donne, Robert Herrick, and Ben Jonson wrote some great ones, and later so did William Wordsworth. The master in the 20 th Century was J. V. Cunningham. In No. 16 from the group he collected as "A Century of Epigrams," the meaning is packed, yet clear, the sounds (I particularly admire the way "idea" echoes "I" in the third line) are rich but do not swamp the meaning; the movement of pauses between units of different length varies against the pentameter line in a way that adds grace to the sounds.
