Extractions: David Bailey still fascinates, whether as a photographer or as the near-mythological media figure mention of his name evokes. I found vivid testimony to this while looking for copies of his 20 or so books in the local art reference library - all bar one had been stolen. The missing books featured nude and clothed photographs of some of this century's most desirable women (often linked romantically to Bailey), including Jean Shrimpton, Catherine Deneuve, Marie Helvin, Penelope Tree and his beautiful current wife, Catherine Bailey. Perhaps this was the reason for their theft. It may also be that Bailey's legend has been writ so large that he lives on as the fashion photographer, even when he hardly shoots fashion any more. Bailey as folk hero was born in 1962 when he and Jean Shrimpton swept in triumph into the New York offices of Vogue , to editor Diana Vreeland's cries of "The British are here! The British are here!" His reputation grew further when director Michaelangelo Antonioni modelled the character of Thomas in Blow Up on mid-'60s Bailey, with that film featuring scenes of the model Veruschka and actress Jane Birkin writhing on the floor under Thomas and his furiously clicking camera.

Written by an Australian philosophy professor in the 1970s, Animal Rights is the founding book of the modern animal rights movement. As such, Animal Rights may be one of the most influential books of the 20th century. When Singer's book first appeared, animal rights was on the fringe of the fringe. Animal rights advocates, to the extent that they could get any attention from the press at all, were treated as a bunch of nuts. CBS Evening News compared British animal rights advocates to Monty Python. But today, especially among young people, animal right is a major part of political and social activism. So even if you think you're inflexibly opposed to animals having rights, Singer's book will help you understand the millions of people who disagree with you. Folks who believe that animals have no rights will often assert that because animals are animals, they should have no rights. As Singer points out, the argument is simply a tautology. To say that animals should have no rights because they are animals is no more logical than to say that women should not have rights because they are women, or that Blacks should have no rights because they are Blacks. To say that status as a woman must, in itself, imply that women have no rights is sexism; to say the same about Blacks is racism. And, Singer demonstrates, to say the same about animals is "specisim."

Brill, 1994), 2 vols. 893 pp. One of the Middle Ages's most important theologians will again receive the hearing he deserves with this publication by Marcia Colish, Professor at Oberlin College. Colish, who must be recognized as one of the true experts on Lombard, has already published several articles on his systematic theology. Parts of those earlier articles, along with much more comprehensive detail, make this an essential text in the history of theology. Peter Lombard (ca. 1095-1160) was the major pre-Thomist in systematic theology. Considered a pioneer, when compared to other theologians of the day (and earlier), Lombard is recognized as an innovator, the usher of scholastic method. For any who wish to understand or appreciate scholasticism and its subsequent effect, this is required reading. Following a biographical sketch as the first chapter, Colish successively provides treatments of Lombard's method, the problem of theological language, and his method of exegesis prior to considering major loci Subsequent chapters provide a lengthy treatment of the Lombard's Doctrine of God; a chapter devoted to creation, angels, Man and the Fall; a separate chapter on Christology; and a final chapter (the entire second volume) on Ethics, Sacraments, and Last Things.
