Compatibly with this, he holds that semiotics, which studies signs and what they refer to in the world, is quite literally the only legitimate form of philosophy today since it is the only one to have kept such relations intact. In order to clarify the basic nature of existing objects in the world and ascertain what exactly the semiotician's signs are referring to, Eco devotes the first of his book's six chapters to the question of being, concluding that even inanimate objects are, like the mind, dynamic and play an active role in causing us to speak. Invoking the Danish linguist Louis Hjelmslev and the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, he postulates a "Something-which-gives-you-a-kick and says: Speak!". Objects, according to Eco, have the power to say "no" to us, rejecting our questions when misplaced.

    Extractions: Hoe men verder ook over zijn werk mag denken, Eco lezen blijft altijd een intellectuele uitdaging. Wat betekent de bovenstaande zin? Niet: wat zou de schrijver er mee bedoelen, maar wat vertelt de zin, de tekst zelf de lezer over de (mogelijke) betekenis? Die vraag lijkt eenvoudiger te beantwoorden dan het is, zeker wanneer men de mogelijke intenties van de auteur buiten beschouwing laat. Het gedeelte van de zin voor de komma bevat de, nauwelijks verborgen, boodschap dat er blijkbaar verschillend gedacht wordt (of kan worden) over en dat er geen eenduidige waardering bestaat voor het werk van Eco. Die uitspraak over 'waardering' is overigens al zeer gewaagd, omdat het begrip 'hoe' waarmee de zin opent, een aantal mogelijkheden toelaat: goed/slecht maar ook gemakkelijk/moeilijk, saai/levendig of, anders geformuleerd: de waardering kan verschillende zaken betreffen. In hoeverre en in welke mate kan en mag de lezer met een tekst 'op de loop gaan'? In het eerste essay 'Intentio lectoris; aantekeningen over de semiotiek van de receptie' schept Eco een theorisch kader voor zijn opvattingen over wat naar zijn oordeel wel en niet kan. In principe kan de lezer een oneindig aantal betekenissen aan een tekst geven, maar dat wil allerminst zeggen dat al die betekenissen ook juist zijn. Eco maakt in dit verband een onderscheid tussen de interpretatie en het gebruik van een tekst.
