Engler illiam Gibson's Yardshow is a site not so much by the founding father of cyberpunk as it is for and about him. It was created by Vkool Communications of Vancouver, B.C., the town Gibson currently calls home. Urban legend has it that Vkool approached Gibson about the project, and it was their work that finally drew him onto the Internet (although not the Luddite many think him, Gibson had purposely been avoiding the Internet for some time). The Yardshow is a combination of rich graphics and Gibson arcana, strung together in a consciously-hip array of semi-related topics. There are six main sections to the site, although only three of these actually contain much discernible information. Words in a Row is a compilation of an "auto interview" presumably this is Gibson answering his own frequently asked questions and two speeches Gibson gave in 1993 and 1995 respectively. Testimony lists the books and music that Gibson favors, while Return of the Repressed contains a short diatribe about the Atomic Disintegrator Gun, a toy "more sturdily built than many domestically-manufactured firearms available today in the United States." Of the remaining sections, Gratitude seems to be left purposefully blank, A Life Deferred is about things "coming soon" to the site, and Gravel is just plain coming soon.

On 15 February, William Gibson - author of Neuromancer, Count Zero, Idoru, and other genre-defining works of cyberpunk fiction - will make his TV scriptwriting debut with "Kill Switch," an episode of The X-Files which Gibson promises will contain "many obvious pokes and prods at high-end academic cyberculture." Gibson declared that the episode "will have more to offer the Wired reader" than any show that's ever been on television, and confessed that he's surprised that the show's producers left in some of the more esoteric references in the dialog. "There are some jokes in there," he mused, "that aren't going to work for the man in the street." Though tight-lipped about the particulars of the script, Gibson says "Kill Switch" will shy away from the "giant backstory" of the series - a labyrinthine meta-conspiracy involving alien abduction, genetic manipulation, and shadow governments - and take agents Scully and Mulder into a world that recalls the dark visions of filmmaker David Cronenberg. "At least, I hope it does," Gibson said modestly from his home in Vancouver.

William Gibson is an American science fiction author living in Vancouver, Canada. He was born near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA, in 1948. Gibson is married with Deborah Gibson, and they have 2 children. Gibson has been writing short stories since the 70's, and he had a few vague ideas as early as 1976, the year he wrote his first published story 'Fragments Of A Hologram Rose', which mixes end-of-an-affair melancholy with an early take on virtual reality. But it wasn't quite working, so he gave up and spent 1977 buying punk 45s. Gibson's first novel, Neuromancer , appeared in 1984. Neuromancer very soon gained a cult status by being one of the first novels in a new science fiction genre called cyberpunk Gibson is the coiner of the word cyberspace . He used it for the first time in his story " Burning Chrome " in 1982.

Extractions: Sitting in the back of a limousine, alternately smoking a cigarette or smiling at the unexpected results of his own eloquence, William Gibson looks comfortable. That's a good thing, too, since the vast majority of "No Maps For These Territories" an 88-minute documentary about the science-fiction author that screened at this year's Slamdance festival is shot, literally, on the road. As he reclines, protected by his seatbelt, and occasionally, by a pair of dark sunglasses, he exists in nowheresville. We don't know where Gibson's going or where he's been. Every now and then we glimpse a freeway sign or some shimmery neon. Director Mark Neale also likes to play visual tricks overlaying images across the car windows that are obviously not the local landscape. Neale has a background in music video, and he employs plenty of MTV jumpiness to illustrate his narrative. The general effect is unsettling we're always moving, but never getting anywhere. But the technique also helps concentrate the viewer on what's important Gibson's words: his elaborations on the act of writing, his personal history, drugs, religion, pornography and, of course, the Internet, or, to use the word that most everybody knows by now Gibson coined, cyberspace.

Colin Laney, the "netrunner" of Gibson's Idoru (1996), is hiding in a hovel in a cardboard city in the heart of Tokyo, with his eyes seemingly permanently attached to eyephones connecting him to the console on which he scans information from around the world. Attuned to subtle alterations in the data flow, he can sense an approaching paradigm shift, one of the "nodal points in history." "Last time we had one like this was 1911," he remarks. In Gibson novels, change happens not in small increments but massively, in a cataclysm, an apocalypse. [Union of Progressive Peoples - A clear analogy for the late U.S.S.R. - A subplot which probably contributed to the demise of this script.] We cut to an exterior shot of the Sulaco and witness the approach of a UPP interceptor ship carrying commandos. They dock with the Sulaco and board her. They enter the ship though an airlock near the cargo bay. As they enter, they find Bishop's twisted and tangled lower torso. They see the blast damage on the drop ship and exchange knowing looks...It is apparent these are combat veterans. As the commandos enter the hyper-sleep vault, the computer announces a security breach. They move down the line of capsules and stop at Bishop's.) The chilly aisle of capsules.
