His schooling was extrordinary only in that it kept him from serving in the Crimean War. After graduation he served in the millitia for 20 years and put to use his training as an artillery officer and in military science. When he received a healthy inheritance from his aunt, Gilbert quit his loathesome job in a government bureau and indulged his fancy by becomeing a barrister. Called to the bar at age 28, he had no "rich attorney's elderly, ugly daughter" to help him escape mediocrity, so his law career lasted just a few years. However, before leaving his law practice, he did marry the daughter of an army officer. The period from 1868 to 1875 was a very fruitful period for Gilbert, primarily because two plays which he wrote in 1871 netted him huge financial rewards. This was also the year that he collaborated briefly with a composer named Sullivan on a production entitled

Today we are seeing a powerful rebirth of interest in Chesterton's workhis defense of traditional morality and Christian orthodoxy; his literary studies of Shaw, Chaucer, Browning, and Dickens; and his economic theories of widely distributed property ("Distributism"). Chesterton was unique in making the paradoxical case for both the safeguards of tradition and for progressive reform. In politics, Chesterton crusaded for free and independent families while attacking the central planners of both collectivism and big business. He was as ardent in attacking socialism as he was in denouncing monopolistic capitalism. He joyfully warred against both atheists and wrong-headed believers. He was as tough on pacifists as he was on militarists, and as hard on Puritans as he was on the new pagans.
