Under the Reagan administration's policy of destroying the power to regulate of the regulatory agencies, the weakened Federal Communications Commission has carried out Attorney General Meese's diktat against "obscenity" and "indecency." The final report of the Meese Commission on Pornography is a legacy for book censors and book burners that could affect authors, editors and elements of the publishing community for a long time to come. Ginsberg said that some of the papers in his file come from related customs and Treasury Department investigative bureaus. His file crisscrosses those of other writers. "They include Leroi Jones, who was the victim of much more attack than people understand and, in that context, his anger is understandable," Ginsberg said. "Most people don't realize what he and other black literati have been through, assuming that all past injustices have been redressed or somehow disappeared out of mind. The waste remains, the waste remains and kills. The section on Tom Hayden in Newark intersects with Jones, since Jones was influenced by an FBI misinformation campaign to denounce Hayden as an [FBI] agent and drive him out of Newark. The section on Black United Front and Ann Arbor intersects with John Sinclair, poet director of Detroit Artists Workshop, a multiracial press that is one of my publishers."

Extractions: KENWARD ELMSLIE These photographs of Allen Ginsberg were taken in 1993 at The Naropa Institute during the fourth and final week of the summer writing program of The Jack Keroac School of Disembodied Poetics. I had been invited, as an artist in residence, to document the week's activities which culminated in two benefit performances at The Boulder Theatre with Allen Ginsberg, dancer Melissa Finley, and musician Phillip Glass. Ginsberg read Howl in its entirity for the first time in seven years, as well as Kaddish and Plutonium Ode . (The latter accompanied by Phillip Glass on piano.) Allen Ginsberg was the co-founder of The Jack Keroac School Of Disembodied Poetics, with poet Anne Waldman, and was extremely supportive of its growth. Not only did he work to make his two sold out readings extraordinary, but he participated in many of the other week's activities. He lead a workshop with Waldman and Tibetan scholar Gelek Rimpoche titled "Composed on the Tongue," and sat in on several panels and discussion groups, including the final student reading of the summer, at which he was accompanied by long-time companion Peter Orlovsky. He was present as both a standard of poetic accomplishment and a symbolic icon against which the students at Naropa could rebel. He was suffering from the onset of diabedes, among other ailments, and still he gave of himself wholeheartedly.

Extractions: If I told you I'd read every word here I'd be lying so bad ... I've read the 'major' ones, though, and I really like them. Poetry sometimes puts me to sleep, but Ginsberg's poetry is just so crammed with manic energy that I stay awake and end up getting into it. None of that 'Sominex' effect here. Ginsberg is a crazed individual, and he has the intelligence and artistic instincts to capture his crazed vision in words. He is probably the only Beat poet whose work stands tall by any measure. Many poets (for instance, Gary Snyder ) can do beautiful and subtle things with words, but don't often grab your attention. You have to already be in a 'poetic mood' to hop on to a Snyder wavelength; his work isn't likely to transform you if you haven't already committed yourself to being transformed. Others, like Gregory Corso , are the opposite: they get your attention, but don't fully deliver on that rarefied, erudite poetic stuff that the college professors and little old ladies like so much. But Ginsberg is *All That* (as Charles Isbell would say in his Hip/hop Review Web Site ). He is PhunkyDopePhat++ and even sings good. So check out some of this stuff listed down below.

The cancer is untreatable, and the poet has "four to 12" months to live, says his doctor, David Clain, of Beth Israel Medical Center, in a statement sent to Wired News Thursday morning. Ginsberg has had chronic hepatitis C for many years. The hepatitis developed into cirrhosis, diagnosed in 1988, but the poet's increasing fatigue and jaundice led to a biopsy last week, which revealed the cancer. "Though the prognosis is fatal, this kind of cancer is not usually characterized by pain," says Ginsberg's assistant, Bob Rosenthal. The 70-year-old poet will receive hospice care at his home in Manhattan until his death, Rosenthal says. Ginsberg learned of the diagnosis as he completed work on his next collection of poems, On Fame and Death.

He was 70. He died at 2:39 a.m. surrounded by family and friends at his New York apartment, said Bill Morgan, his friend and archivist. On Thursday, it was learned Ginsberg had terminal liver cancer, and doctors had said the poet was expected to live between four and 12 months. The poet laureate of the Beat Generation, Ginsberg was born June 3, 1926, in Newark, New Jersey. He was educated at Columbia University and was a longtime resident of New York City's East Village neighborhood. Ginsberg and the other "beat" writers are credited with starting a genre of American prose and poetry in the late 1940s that celebrated free-wheeling Bohemians skeptical of moral codes and political power. The word beatnik is derived from the movement, which also gave rise to the hippies of the 1960s. Ginsberg along with writers such as Jack Kerouac, Gregory Corso, William Burroughs, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Lucien Carr came to embody the anti-establishment, non-conformist literary movement that experimented heavily with hallucinogenic drugs.
