The absurdity is meter meter itself would consist of the stressed me- –ter truly unstressed syllable would be silent. But even that is far too inadequate, for even if you would read this essay aloud to this point- idea of metrics was so entrenched that its fallacy was needed - lest how does one organize the Whitmanian Revolution if there is nothing against which to revolt? In other words, vers librists have actively promoted the metric fallacy in order to have a hegemony to toss! While one might admire the wicked complicity between the 2 ‘supposedly’ warring camps of poetry, one is still left with the fallacy at the root of it all.

    Extractions: Back to Robert's home page. Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962)is an American poet, best known for poetry set in the Big Sur area of California such as "The Loving Shepherdess." To quote Encyclopaedia Britannica, "one of the most controversial U.S. poets of the 20th century, for whom all things but his pantheistically conceived God are transient, and human life is viewed as a frantic, often contemptible struggle within a net of passions." The poem I put into my home page, November Surf , agrees both with Britannica's description of the author, and my own impressions of the rugged coastline. His poetry also suggests images of Scotland, with moors, mist, mountains and desolation, images quite similar to the coastline south of Monterey. Even with the State Highway 1 hanging onto the cliffs of Big Sur, the area still seems rugged and deserted. For example, check out the description of the Point Sur lighthouse. My first reference to him was in Rosalind Sharpe Wall's "A Wild Coast and Lonely: Big Sur Pioneers" (World Wide Pub./Tetra, 1989). She describes Jeffers as one of the interesting and eccentric characters that populated the lonely coastline coast back before the area was easily travelled. My interest in him reflects mostly on my enthusiasm for California history.
