Her work transcends traditional bounds of self and society, expressing conscious optimism- the unity of justice, equality and tenderness. Jordan is one of those rare writer/activists whose greatest strength is her ability to live what she believes. The author of 26 books, June Jordan is the most published African American writer in history. Ms. Magazine (July 2000) considers June Jordan "one of America's fiercest literary figures and social activists" and " the hope of a generation". Her 26th book, Soldier: A Poet's Childhood , was released by Basic Books on May 1, 2000 and since then has received unanimous national acclaim. Internationally celebrated for her creative accomplishments, she is Professor of African American Studies at the University of California at Berkeley where she directs the enormously popular Poetry For the People program. Poetry For the People received a Chancellor's Recognition for Community Partnership on September 19, 2000, for reaching out to local high schools, congregations and correctional facilities as well as University students. Jordan has been Professor of English at more than seven North American universities and colleges, including Sarah Lawrence, City College and Yale University.

Jordan's poems look easy, and in fact are just the sort of poetry that amateurs imitate so badly, but they are actually feats of formal expertise and clear yet passionate thought. A prolific, much-lauded poet, novelist, teacher, and activist, Jordan responds fearlessly to the entire universe, from a disappointing God to the unhappy empress of Japan and women starving in Somalia and Los Angeles and weeping for their dead in Northern Ireland, Lebanon, and Bosnia. Combative and questioning, Jordan argues with the Buddha and renounces renunciation, then challenges the patriarchal god of the Bible: "You mean to tell me that the planet / is the brainchild / of a single / male / head of household?" For more recent information, see eg Bill Garrett's notes from Balticon XXX The reason Robert Jordan chose to write fantasy was its opportunities to build cultures and experiment with them, in a way and with a freedom to comment that is unachievable with a "realistic", domestically based world. The story of TWoT evolved during a very long period, in part beginning in the middle of the seventies with the idea of the Breaking of the World, before he found the "final scene in the final book" and began to actually write TEotW. The main impetus from the beginning was the notion of men breaking the world" (my emphasis), and that men able to channel must be killed, controlled or stopped at all costs for 3,000 years. This led naturally to a society where women had great power and respect. As an example of this, he puts forth Davram Bashere's reaction to Faile being a Hunter of the Horn. His initial negative response does not come from that Faile is a girl, but that she only is 17 years old. Her gender is irrelevant to the issue. The interview then continued with the communication between the various characters, and Robert Jordan stated clearly that every person keeping a secret, or withholding information, has a good reason for it, even if it in many cases are very personal. He exemplified this with the relation between Birgitte, Elayne and Egwene, where everyone

Her question is a challenge and her examples are not flattering to whites. "I would forget my furs on any chair. / I would ignore the doormen at the knob . . . " and, finally, "I would do nothing. / That would be enough." Commentary The gap between the speaker and what she conceives of as white is enormous. Not only would her white presence "disturb the streets" of a black neighborhood, but whiteness denotes supercilious oblivion, taking a life of ease for granted, and never having to prove yourself. The tone is disapproving. This poem, like Lucille Clifton's poem, "in the inner city" (see this database), makes clear that the culture of whiteness may not be anything that blacks wish to emulate.

Powell's Friday meeting with Jordan's King Abudullah II comes a day after the U.S. diplomat mediated an Israeli-Palestinian agreement for a timeline to end hostilities in the region. Following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Powell announced Thursday that Israel and the Palestinians had agreed to complete seven straight days without violence to be followed by a six-week "cooling off period" when the two sides would begin to implement confidence building measures. The secretary said that the timeline would be a test for Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian commitment to end violence. "Like the prime minister just said, there will be a seven-day period starting at some point in the future when quiet occurs that will measure the chairman's actions," said Powell, referring to Arafat.
