Latest HarperCollins 1999 A book review by Danny Yee In Legends Robert Silverberg presents five newly written novellas by leading fantasy novelists, set in their best known imagined worlds (a brief description of which precedes each story). This is an excellent idea: either a pleasure for fans or a sampler for those trying to choose between multi-volume series. (This book appears to be part of a larger hardcover volume containing eleven works, among them an Earthsea novella by Le Guin for which, sight unseen, I'd be willing to trade all the others.) Three of the worlds were already familiar to me. Terry Pratchett's "The Sea and the Little Fishes" is a Discworld story featuring Granny Weatherwax. I've never had much success describing Pratchett's humour, but this is a good sample. Almost as frivolous, Anne McCaffrey's "Runner of Pern" is a slight piece, a romance with science fiction trappings and without any real substance. Robert Jordan is one of the most popular story-tellers today. His multi-volume books The "Wheel of Time" have created a phenomenon with over two million copies in print. Not only is Jordan one of the most read and talked-about authors today but he is one of the hotter topics on the internet computer network. RJ: The women like the women. I was told by a number of women who came to a signing several years ago that they were surprised to find out that I was a man. They thought no man could write women like that. And I like this because my editor used to say that I couldn't write women at all. I find this a very sweet revenge. RJ: Two things, really, I think. One, you can talk about good and evil, right and wrong, and nobody tells you that you're being judgmental. And the other thing is, in fantasy there's always the belief that you can overcome whatever obstacles there are, that you "can" make tomorrow better. And not only that you "can", but that you "will", if you work at it.

Extractions: RJ recently gave a talk at Trinity College in Dublin. Our man on the Scene, Emmet O'Brien reports: Robert Jordan arrived at 6:00 this evening in Trinity College for his talk.. this being Ireland, the talk didn't start for a further ten minutes, but in the meantime he signed books for those of us who actually turned up on time. The turn out was pretty disappointing considering TFoH is no. 2 on the best-seller lists here: only about thirty people were there including SF society Mafia. He didn't have any prepared speech but took questions from the floor. He still isn't sure how long WoT will go on for, saying probably seven books but adding that when TEotW first came out he saw the series as four books.. he does however know what the ending will be and how all the major story lines will resolve. He expressed vague dissatisfaction with the covers but didn't seem too upset about them. He talked for a while about 'reverse engineering' various myths, removing the culture-specific elements and combining the stories, giving the example of the Wolfbrother idea, which was derived partly from the Native American Coyote trickster/saviour figure, of whom both Mat and Perrin reflect aspects. He does not intend to speed up as the end of the series approaches: the books are planned to come out at the same rate until the end..
