Extractions: In 93, I saw Suzanne Vega at the Ventura Concert Theater. I had short notice of the concert and the picture I was working from was the size of a postage stamp, so the painting I did of her was pretty bad. I figured it's the thought that counts so I decided to give it to her anyway. I wanted to keep a low profile due to the poor quality of the painting, so I placed it on the stage before she came out. She saw it after a few songs and picked it up. She apparently thought it was just put there and said thank you looking around expecting to see the person who left it in front of her. To my surprise, she put the painting where the audience could see it. I sent a picture of that painting along with a stamped self-addressed envelope and a request for an autograph to the address on the latest CD and it came back with her signature on it. This portrait is also pretty bad, but because it has her autograph, I included it on this page.

With Indigo Girls, Joan Armatrading, Suzanne Vega, Michelle Shocked, and Ani DiFranco on the bill, the event had a doubly alternative flavor, one reflected in the overwhelmingly young and female audience sporting nose rings and various other pierced body parts. Call it Folkapalooza, if you will. And in this summer when that better-known festival of alternative music has taken so much guff for its testosterone-heavy line-up, it was women's voices as well as women's guitars, basses, and other instruments that roared the loudest, in numbers too great to ignore, at Rhode Island's Fort Adams State Park last weekend. No, the biggest thrills came courtesy of the girls. Ani DiFranco's fiery odes to maladjustment were given a fat-bottomed boost by longtime drummer Andy Stochansky and bassist Sara Lee doing double duty over the weekend with DiFranco and Indigo Girls. An even bigger boost came from the hypercharged fans who responded to DiFranco with an adulation typically reserved for rock stars. "Ani, come home with me," cried out one female, moments before another crashed the stage and danced for Ani and her legions before being wrestled away by security. Pity poor Peter Rowan, the folk-bluegrass legend who was given the thankless task of following DiFranco. Neither his Crucial Country mates Jerry Douglas and Tony Rice nor the familiar strains of "Panama Red" could break DiFranco's spell.

Extractions: Suzanne Vega We spent 20 minutes or so, edging our way through a motionless and enchanted audience, trying to secure a place at the front of the Acoustic Stage at Glastonbury 2000. My motives for this activity are usually driven by my manic (and no doubt irritating) need to take snaps and capture footage. I did take SOME footage, but this time however, I was beset by a magnetic desire to see close-up, the object of everyone's bliss and admiration. If you have heard Suzanne Vega, you appreciate about half the experience. If you haven't seen Suzanne Vega, and like her sound, you are missing-out big style. She captures her audience in a way I have rarely seen. Since inches high, doing tours with Mum and Dad (who are opera singers), I have probably seen hundreds of vocalists, most now vague - but very few who are genuinely as talented, sincere and heart-warming as Suzanne Vega. At the start of the show, Suzanne dulcidly asked the crowd to 'speak to her'. She encouraged feedback and participation from the audience all the way through, sharing thoughts and memories that had influenced her songs. Some artists give nothing away with their music. Suzanne Vega shared her art with sincerity and understatedness that had me a little besotted! Nicki and I have been on about this loads of times since, but on a couple of occasions throughout her spot, Suzanne sang straight to us. We had cleared a fair amount of space around us, and a couple in front left. We quickly hogged the area, which turned out to be a useful tactical ploy, allowing me to take un-jostled footage as the need arose. We held a spot with Dave, Andy and Colin next to the tent-pillar just to the front and right, facing the stage. I do not for one instant believe that Suzanne Vega would have picked us out had it not been for the fact we had big, gob-smacked, open-mouthed expressions. It was a priceless and intimate experience for me though, and Nicki. Doubtless for Andy, Dave and Colin too - although the whole time I don't think I even looked round to see.
