Adams Handles Heavy Issue With Taste
It isn't often that an author can handle a heavy issue like domestic violence with taste, much less with humor. However Deborah Adams has done just that in "All The Hungry Mothers". This is a fast-paced,funny, yet tragic, story that I could barely put down. Excellent read.

Heavy societal issue doesn't fit into fun, light mystery.
I read mysteries for fun.I don't read them to hear about heavy societal issues, i.e., domestic violence.I've read all of the other Jesus Creek books except for one and have enjoyed them; except for this one.Ms. Adamshandles the domestic violence issue well, but in my opinion, it justdoesn't belong in light, amusing stories of Jesus Creek. ... A Good Start
The subject of this title has been on my mind for a few years, so when I bumped into it on Amazon I bought it immediately.In the past, anthropology has often focused its stare on ostensibly specific and discrete groups.This book represents a late entry into an anthropology that has turned to face the dynamics of cultural becoming.The central idea is that the state is not absent at its margins and, in fact, is more readily seen as it struggles to obtain some level of certainty in uncertain political terrain.So, nothing revelatory in the thesis-except that anthropologists are saying it.The book contains 11 essays of unequal insight, with Veena Das's 'Paradox of Legibility', and Talal Asad's 'Where are the Margins of the State' being the stand-outs.

I enjoy the detailed analysis of quotidian statecraft without falling back on excruciating Marxist analogs.For that I thank the authors.However, I have a number of gripes.First, there are some shallow, introductory digs at both Giorgio Agamben (p.15) and James Scott (pp.9-10) that I found weak enough to wonder whether the authors making them had actually read the work(s) of their targets.In the end, 'Anthropology in the Margins of the State' lacks a strong theoretical thrust, and some essays flitter a bit too far from the titular topic, and toward a personal micro-journalism.For such reasons, I cannot imagine a casual reader taking much from the book.Rather, this is a collection for anthropologists, and perhaps, for academic professionals in related fields (geography, maybe?). ... Delightful, entertaining and layered with meaning
Deb Adams is my favorite modern mystery writer, bar none. And she does not disappoint in this great book in her Jesus Creek series. Her books often have a tongue-in-cheek feeling, with an underlying stream of consciousness that reflects social standards and Deb's own irony in play. Her fascination with geneaology and Jesse James is terrifically played out in All the Dirty Cowards and I can't wait for the next book! Get writing Deb!

Deborah Does it again
Having read all of Deborah's other books, I had some idea of what to expect and was NOT disappointed.The characters in the present and the past were both animated and interesting.They were funny while still being realistic.Whatever subject Deobrah is enthused about at the moment (This time it was genealogy.) always comes through in her books.When she was into endurance riding, the book was horsey.Now she traces the ancestors of Jesse James-and gives some websites to start you tracing your own family.The only criticism I have is that the plot was a little light and plagued with coincedences, but youll never notice that while you're reading it.Just go with the flow and enjoy! ...
