Product Description
Through the pages of "Adam's Rib Disorder" Deborah takes us on the roller coaster ride of her life. In down to earth, conversational prose, she guides us through the struggles of her life: child molestation, adultery, spousal abuse, two failed marriages, a cheating husband, her battle with cancer, and raising three children, all the while proving that even against the toughest of life's challenges - through tears, laughter, and perseverance - that with the strength of God all things can be overcome. This book will open the eyes of those who continue to walk in darkness. Don't be fooled, there is NO excuse for abuse of ANY kind. Written amid the turmoil it describes, this book honestly and immediately recounts Deborah's discovery of strength through God in a time when survival seemed almost impossible. In her time of emptiness when she realized that she could no longer survive on her own she finally turned to God instead of man. Deborah's memoir reveals how her eyes were opened and helps us understand, with her, that man had none of the answers she needed and that she would find wholeness and victory only through God. ... Product Description
All day and night in sun and rain and snow, a stray dog wanders the streets of a neighborhood after its devoted owner has died. No one takes much notice of the thin, unremarkable animal that some people call Bones. No one except the narrator, a young boy, who takes an interest in the dog s well being.

The boy feeds Bones scraps of meat and watches out for the dog s safety. One day the boy s fast action stops a car from hitting the dog. Bones reminds him of his own dog Teddy the one he loved and who died. As the young boy reaches out to help Bones, the dog slowly begins to trust him. The two form a strong attachment that ultimately leads to mutual ownership as each finds companionship and solace in the other.

Readers will be deeply affected by Deborah Blumenthal s story of love, loss, and love regained and will easily empathize with the narrator, sharing his concern for an animal in need. Adam Gustavson s full-color illustrations reveal the shadows and light, as well as the quiet drama, of neighborhood life, and the emerging relationship between the narrator and the lonely, dispirited dog that captures his attention, and finally, his heart. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pensive, tender and heartwarming
Pensive, tender and heartwarming. This author/illustrator combo perfectly creates the milieu of loneliness and grief the dog and boy feel, and then how gently they come to befriend one another. This book is intended for ages 4-8, but I tagged it for ages 9-12 because one instance of narration and illustration might be too mature for young ones. For example, the description of the death of the dog's owner:

"But one day, the old man stopped living. He just sat in an armchair in his house for days until the police broke through the door."

That bit startled me and I know my seven-year old would find it upsetting.

Otherwise, this is a touching tale that many will fall in love with especially those who have discovered that "Dogs find their way inside you and you want to keep them there." - Biblio Reads Children's Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars From Blue to New
This is a lovely story about how a homeless dog who could pass for a pure German shepherd (the blue eyes suggest possible husky heritage) found a loving home.

The large German shepherd mix, abandoned to the street watches his home, a frame house painted blue is demolished.Over time, he becomes thin and shaggy.A young boy, who narrates the story of the dog he would later call Bones, describes his sorrow over the recent death of his dog. When he sees Bones, he gradually earns his trust. In time, the beautiful pointy eared dog comes to trust the boy who is so kind to him.

In an amazing show of kinship, the boy lies down on the grass so the dog will know that he is safe outside too.The pair bond and in time, Bones becomes the boy's loving pet and watchdog.People in their neighborhood love the blue eyed German shepherd mix and marvel at his crushed velvet looking beautiful black face and pointy ears.

The illustrations are masterpieces; one can readily see the neighborhood change along with the dog.The blue house is gone. The dog is no longer a skittish bag of bones, but a well filled out, much loved pet and fixture in the neighborhood.People of all ages will love this story with the message of compassion and the beautiful illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Special Stray
From a special stray, with eyes of brown and blue, Bones becomes a beloved dog again.Once Bones lived with an old man, but the old man passed away.A boy whose dog had died, takes time with this stray, and finally brings him home, naming him Blue.Large oil pastel illustrations set the tone for this quiet book.Children ages 5-7 will be drawn to this story of losing and finding a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful and moving!
A beautiful and moving story of a young boy and the skittish, homeless dog that eventually becomes his pet. It brought tears to my eyes the first time I read it, and it still does. The illustrations are as sensitively drawn and as touching as the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Don't Have Love Animals to Love This Book
Blue House Dog is a one of those special books that children will ask to hear again and again. Beautifully written and illustrated, it is the story of a stray dog, neglected and frightened whose straggly appearance earns him the name of Bones and of a boy, the narrator of this story, who ultimately wins him over. In some ways Bones reminds the boy of Teddy, his dog who died. But the boy appreciates Bones' uniqueness and knows his trust will be hard won. Wooing him slowly and patiently--bits of food, a slight touch to his nose--the boy exhibits sensitivity and empathy, and in my favorite part of the story, rests his own head on the grass so he'll know how Bones feels sleeping outside.

The illustrations by Adam Gustavson gracefully depict the neighborhood and the evolving tender relationship between the boy and a lonely dog. This is a story of loss and love and a mutually healing friendship that will resonate deeply with children listeners and adult readers. It is a simple charming tale with a BIG life-affirming theme. I loved it, but even more important, so did all the little ones I read it to.

Product Description

Kamari Maxine Clarke and Deborah A. Thomas argue that a firm grasp of globalization requires an understanding of how race has constituted, and been constituted by, global transformations. Focusing attention on race as an analytic category, this state-of-the-art collection of essays explores the changing meanings of blackness in the context of globalization. It illuminates the connections between contemporary global processes of racialization and transnational circulations set in motion by imperialism and slavery; between popular culture and global conceptions of blackness; and between the work of anthropologists, policymakers, religious revivalists, and activists and the solidification and globalization of racial categories.

A number of the essays bring to light the formative but not unproblematic influence of African American identity on other populations within the black diaspora. Among these are an examination of the impact of “black America” on racial identity and politics in mid-twentieth-century Liverpool and an inquiry into the distinctive experiences of blacks in Canada. Contributors investigate concepts of race and space in early-twenty-first century Harlem, the experiences of trafficked Nigerian sex workers in Italy, and the persistence of race in the purportedly non-racial language of the “New South Africa.” They highlight how blackness is consumed and expressed in Cuban timba music, in West Indian adolescent girls’ fascination with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and in the incorporation of American rap music into black London culture. Connecting race to ethnicity, gender, sexuality, nationality, and religion, these essays reveal how new class economies, ideologies of belonging, and constructions of social difference are emerging from ongoing global transformations.

Product Description
With these 19 plays, the New Play Project ably makes its claim as one of the most ambitious and vibrant going concerns in the world of LDS culture to all of us mission-field Mormons who have only heard rumors and testimonies. Out of the Mount delivers comedy and tragedy and social commentary, allegory, politics and healthy doses of armchair philosophy and theology in plays that mainly focus on (as most good plays do) relationships that unfold via crackling dialogue. Whether it’s Clark Kent and Lois Lane applying for a marriage license or Adam and Eve feeling their way towards some sort of post-fall rapprochement or young couples falling in and out of love, these playwrights are writing for these latter-days, even when there’s nothing particularly LDS about their characters and settings. That said, what I love most about this anthology is that we get—especially with the fantastic concluding trio of “Gaia,” “Prodigal Son” and “Little Happy Secrets”—works that artfully and poignantly explore key aspects of the grand drama that is the Mormon experience. —William Morris, A Motley Vision ... Again, a gift for my grandaughter. This is the field she hopes to go into, after completing the educatiion necessary. She has been in our BROADWAY BOUND KIDS program here in Sonoma for many years now, and has decided she really wants to be "behind the scenes" in directing, staging, and whatever else that would include.GREAT GIFT for her!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
This book covers it all! This is an invaluable reference for any producer, director, or theatre teacher... whether attempting their first show or their twentieth!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Novaks Stage Musical Theatre
I am the founder and artistic director of a community theater group, Green Room Players, that has been in existence since 1993 in Franklin County,Massachusetts, and have directed musicals each year, including Babes inArms, Snoopy! , A Wonderful Life, Barnum, South Pacific, and Grease.

Of all the books I have read on musical theater production, StagingMusical Theatre by Dr. Elaine Novak (with contributions from her daughter,Deborah Novak, an actress of stage, TV and film) has been by far the mosthelpful to me.It is written in simple and easy-to-comprehend language, and covers practically every aspect of theater production.

In a veryorganized and straightforward manner, the Novaks have discussed selectingthe musical; analyzing the book, lyrics and score; interpreting themusical; holding auditions; casting; rehearsals; blocking; and polishing. Included are specimen time tables that are very helpful to a beginningdirector. There are also suggestions for exercises, games andimprovisations to get actors acquainted with each other and with thedirector. The book also addresses potential problems -- such as kissing, slapping, asides, the vocal solos, curtain calls, pit dress, and evenduties of the offstage crew -- and rounds out its invaluable stock ofinformation with scenes for practice, an appendix containing lists anddescriptions of well-known musicals and various types of musicals, anextensive bibliography on any aspect of play production, and a 6-pageglossary of theatrical terms.

I strongly recommend Staging MusicalTheatre as a textbook for beginning and prerequisite courses in academicprograms in theater.I also highly recommend it for all who are involvedwith play production -- especially amateur, community, and school theaterdirectors, producers, choreographers, and actors.
