5-0 out of 5 stars A Reigning Queen of Writers
In this 1990 volume of 48 pages, you will read in lyrical verse everything you need to know about oppression of Black people, by one of our finest writers. Angelou herself, now 78, has risen above bigotry, but hasn't, nor shouldn't, forget about it. It is the black person's legacy ("These Yet to Be United States") and the white person's shame. Author of the highly-acclaimed autobiography, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," Angelou sings about slave days, "take me on, Virginia, loose your turban of flowers" and in "The Grandmothers" speaks the title words, "I shall not be moved," a peon to the bravery of the black woman and the cruelty she has endured since captivity. This book should be read by every schoolteacher to her Ghetto children.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXPERIENCE SOMETHING NEW......................
I Shall Not Be Movedby Maya Angelou

Is a collection of forty-eight pages of poems.I know little of Maya.Even the small exposure I have had to a few of her writings leaves me wanting to know more about what she is saying.I found this book of poems a new experience not only to feel her glowing smile and personality while feeling the movement of her lyrics, but also to try and see through her eyes items ofimportance. In her poem Me and My Work,I found I need to understand more than I already do.The last couple lines are.....
"Yet the only thing I really don't need
is strangers' sympathy.
That's someone else's word for caring."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Poetry, Angelou is by far the best Poet alive
I have read every poem in this collection at least 50 times, no exateration, and they are great. One of these poems, Equailty, I have used for a high school poetry thesis, I made an "A".Even though this collection is from 1990 it is still update! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!
Angelou is so amazing and to hear her read her own poetry is a gift in itself. Her voice is so beautiful and her poetry so moving. Everyone who loves poetry should own this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, just the best.
Fantastic, better still by the fact of it being read by the great lady her self.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maya Angelou Poetry Collection RH 782 Audio Books,

The rhyme, the rhythm, the melody, by Jove, Maya, they speak to me, so strongly, I wrote4 poems inthat style. (Well, yes, I definitely tried.) I just considered it one of those college course music studies, where I used to write in the style of Bach, etc.)

Serendipidy: I found the set in the Military Library at Hurlburt( your tax dollars at work! ) and kept on listening and listening, getting more and more the shades and undertones. One must listen to poetry often, as new meanings appear that were not evident with just ones-lightly-over listening!I am buying my OWN set. And there is this ebony sister I feel a strong kinship with, who will get her own set from me, too.

I love her poems, born as most great writing and poetry is , - born out of joy and pain. (Schubert: Out of my great sorrow and pain, write I the little songs.) I love her sonorous voice. Reminds me on Odetta.

I am glad I "met" her. As I, as a white girl, adore Opra, so I just had to know why Opra admired Dr. Angelou. And I am glad I found out.(...) Karla (Katrina Kwiatkowska) (...)

In other poems, MayaAngelou reveals a more personal and intimate side in poems such as Come beMy Baby and He Said He Loved Another. Dr. Angelou shares the historicalroots and associations she drew upon to create her Inaugural Poem On thePulse of Morning delivered on January 20, 1993 at President Clinton'sinauguration. 5-0 out of 5 stars Close Your Eyes and Open Your Mind - As you read this book!
This is an excellent book to read to children at bedtime or during storytime at school or church. It's a short, easy read and it's full of excellent information about the history and culture of Western Africa. Don't be fooled by the title. This book has nothing to do with black magic; and everything to do with using ones own imagination. The storyline is rooted in reality as the main character enjoys his "travels" to other places; however he always wants to return home to the people he loves. The beautiful photographs in this book make it a great coffee table book as well.I encourage you to introduce the children in your family or neighborhood to Kofi and His Magic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have in children's literature
If you are a children's literature fan this is a MUST have in your collection. Worth finding the collectors books because Maya Angeleou will forever hold a place in children's stories. The first editions of this softcover are going to be harder and harder to get. It has vivid photographs of the Ndebele people. Thandi the main character tells the story of her people and family and her best friend who is a chicken. She crosses culture lines and she will win the heart of anyone who has a child's heart, and the chicken is cute too. Great teacher's book, bet for under 5th grade, ESL is a great fit because the words are BIG and easy to recognize.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Painted house, my friend chicken, and me
Reading this book my daugther(6yrs.) and I enjoyed a special moment learning about how beautiful are the simple things. And gave us the oportunity to learn how easy is to celebrate life and love.
The most important lesson of all is to be proud of what we love and care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anthopology for Children
I am a senior in college, and an elementary education major with a minor in anthropology- when I found this book, I was estatic. Its beautiful photography is greatly complimented with Maya Angelou's flowing words.Humor, color, and the similarities with the Ndebele girl (Thandi, which means hope) are sure to attract children. They will learn that even though Thandi is across the world, all children share many similaries- a lesson that should be remembered, especially in modern times.I will definately use this in my classroom someday. Never have I seen such a great childrens book that is infused with anthropology and the study of a culture!

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows the pure heart of a child
I bought this book today and read it with my 10 year old niece. It has exceptionally beautiful photographs of the Ndebele people. It is a story that reminds us that the simple things in life are the most precious.Thanditells the story of her people and family and her best friend, achicken. She is a proud and pure hearted child that shares the culture ofthe Ndebele people with us.This is a lovely story that is a fun, educational, easy to read one that made me feel young at heart again. I'llbe needing an additional copy to share with my grandaughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding children's story!
As a reading tutor, I have enjoyed sharing this book with my 4th grade students. It examins the differences of people, our different cultures, and is a colorful and enchanting story. My kids, both boys and girls are facinated by this book, and we always continue a dialogue with it. The recognize the author, as one their parents respect, and enjoy talking about it and laughing about the silly chicken. We have talked about trying to paint houses with a chicken feather, and may jsut try to do this during black history month! I adore this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift to Delight
Written by Maya Angelou as a personal and touching Mother's Day salute, this tiny volume of poetry will truly make every day Mother's Day for any woman who reads it, be she a mother or a daughter. In a mere ten pages of text, the author traces and illuminates the complex mother/daughter relationship from conception ("I was created in you...you were created for me") through clinging, fretful babyhood, the turbulent teen years and adult understanding.

My favorite lines:

You were always
The heart of happiness to me,
Bringing nougats of glee,
Sweets of open laughter.

Angelou's little book is a gift to delight.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful -- but brief
I happened upon this book while perusing a home decorating store in Laguna Beach, CA.I opened it up and read a couple of pages and it really touched me, as I had my first baby 6 months ago.Maya beautifully puts into exquisite words what I have been imagining my baby to be thinking. It was just very poignant for me.I am completely enjoying my experience of being a new mom and this poem really touched me.I got home and read the whole thing only to be a bit disappointed at how short it is.It seemed like it would be longer, with a hardback cover and several pages of "stuff" that was not Maya's writing.I counted 18 total sheets of paper, including 5 blank pages and a few more that were almost blank.Oh well, I felt a little disappointed that there wasn't more for the $10 that I paid, but it's a beautiful poem and worth reading several times.Compared to how much money we've spent on stuff for the baby, $10 for this new mother doesn't seem too much and it really is a beautiful poem that wonderfully encapsulates what it feels like to be a new mother and completely in love with your child.I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I think that it should be in the $6/$7 range for the length, but I still feel that for me, it was worth the price. It would make a wonderful gift for any mother.

3-0 out of 5 stars maternal thoughts from maya
I checked out this book from our public library because I was intrigued by the notion of a tiny "book" the entire content of which is one, short poem by one of our country's most famous writers. In addition to her autobiographical works, Maya Angelou has published five volumes of poetry, and has read her work ("On the Pulse of Morning") at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton. There is no foreword, preface, afterword, bibliography, or any explanatory notes to "Mother," just the brief poem itself. If you did not stop to ponder and meditate, you could read the poem in five minutes. But that would be a shame. Angelou's poem evokes the grace and power of our mothers, and our experience of them beginning as babies, then proceeding through childhood, teenage rebellion, and then adulthood. My mother died a year ago and Angelou's poetry renewed my gratitude and admiration for her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the love you have for your baby, perfectly.
I have never written a review, I'm the person who always reads but never writes.I saw that this book didn't have 5 stars average so I had to review it. Becoming a mother is the most miraculous and blessed thing that has ever happened to me - most Mothers will agree. This book pulled at my heart as it captured that love between me and my Son so perfectly. I read this book and cry every time. I will buy this book for each of my friends as they have their first children. Never has a book been so meaningful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength, courage, and wisdom
Maya Angelou has had quite a life. Born Marguerite Johnson in April 1928, she grew up in a small Arkansas town named Stamps with her older brother, grandmother, and uncle. She experienced more pain as a child than most people do in a lifetime: racism, abandonment, and rape. However, she managed to rise above it all. A Glorious Celebration details her journey from an unwed teen mother who briefly fell into prostitution to the respected poet and author she is today. A human who has fallen several times time in life and picked herself up again to keep on going. Kudos to Maya.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Glorious Doorstop
This is indeed a glorious coffee table book. At present I've got a copy on my night table, on my kitchen counter, one in each of my bathrooms, and one for my patio table. The book store has ordered me a copy of the new water proof dust jacket so I can keep a copy down by the pool. I had been looking for a good picture book of my other favorite poets, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, T.S. Eliot, and William Carlos Williams, but theirs were all out of print. I would keep my newest copy on my living room coffee table were it not for my copies of Hillary and Bill Clinton's autobiographies. This is really as extraordinary a book as one could wish for. Happy birthday, Maya. I hope to see you at Barack's inauguration, again behind the podium, reciting another beautiful poem in that mellifluous voice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maya Angelou: A Glorious Celebration
A Glorious Celebration makes a wonderful coffee table book. Everyone who comes to my house gravitates to the book. Also makes a great gift for book lovers.May Angelou is just phenomenal in her writings.I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed
I assumed that this book would include some of Maya Angelou's writings. It didn't.I enjoyed looking at the photos and reading about her, but I intended this as a gift to someone who had never read her writings.

Product Description
“At one time, I described myself as a cook, a driver, and a writer. I no longer drive, but I do still write and I do still cook. And having reached the delicious age of eighty-one, I realize that I have been feeding other people and eating for a long time. I have been cooking nearly all my life, so I have developed some philosophies.”

Renowned and beloved author Maya Angelou returns to the kitchen—both hers and ours—with her second cookbook, filled with time-tested recipes and the intimate, autobiographical sketches of how they came to be. Inspired by Angelou’s own dramatic weight loss, the focus here is on good food, well-made and eaten in moderation. When preparing for a party, for example, Angelou says, “Remember, cooking large amounts of food does not mean that you are obligated to eat large portions.” When you create food that is full of flavor, you will find that you need less of it to feel satisfied, and you can use one dish to nourish yourself all day long.

And oh, what food you will create! Savor recipes for Mixed-Up Tamale Pie, All Day and Night Cornbread, Sweet Potatoes McMillan, Braised Lamb with White Beans, and Pytt I Panna (Swedish hash.) All the delicious dishes here can be eaten in small portions, and many times a day. More important, they can be converted into other mouth-watering incarnations. So Crown Roast of Pork becomes Pork Tacos and Pork Fried Rice, while Roasted Chicken becomes Chicken Tetrazzini and Chicken Curry. And throughout, Maya Angelou’s rich and wise voice carries the food from written word to body-and-soul-enriching experience.

Featuring gorgeous illustrations throughout and Angelou’s own tips and tricks on everything from portion control to timing a meal, Great Food, All Day Long is an essential reference for everyone who wants to eat better and smarter—and a delightful peak into the kitchen and the heart of a remarkable woman.

You'll feel as if, by some stroke of luck, Angelou had settled down for a pleasant chat over dinner and a glass of wine, telling stories about her family and sharing her powerfully stated opinions about the African American experience, sex versus sensuality, and the ins and outs of growing old. Her reading is lively and intelligent, her words at once lyrical and powerful, blurring the line between memoir and poetry. Don't be surprised if you find yourself repeatedly hitting rewind, just to savor again Angelou's wonderful word play and mighty matriarch's voice. (Running Time: 90 minutes) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Even the Stars Look Lonesome by Maya Angelou
I was very satisfied with my purchase of this book and also with the delivery.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that's best heard!
Most books are meant to be read . . . one exception to this
rule might well be EVEN THE STARS LOOK LONESOME
by Maya Angelou, the continuation of her bestselling
WOULDN'T TAKE NOTHING FOR MY JOURNEY NOW.

I was fortunate to hear the CD version of this book, which
is a combination of essays by the author on a wide variety of subjects.

What made it so outstanding was to actually hear the author . . . her
voice is unlike any you've ever heard . . . to listen to it makes you
feel like she is talking directly to you.

EVEN THE STARS grabbed me from the opening:

* My last marriage was made in heaven. The musical accompaniment
was provided by Gabriel, and angels were so happy that ten thousand
of them danced on the head of a pin.

I was mesmerized from that point on . . . and each chapter seemingly
kept getting better, covering such diverse topics as aging, learning,
vacationing, sexuality, teaching and violence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Style & Grace
I was looking to get something else when I first bought this book....but, nevertheless, its message resonated with me where, on page 174-175, Maya eloquently pens about Dr. Martin Luther King saying that we all are related to one another and that we all share same demons and divines. Then she writes about W.E. R. Dubois, the first African-American to attend Harvard University who said ALL people, of all colours, age and status dream of a fair and workable future.....the message could not be more important today in a rising economic depression, loss of wealth and purchasing power of poor and middle-class Americans, and growing fascism that is beginning to creep into America today thanks to the cold and calculated Neocon influence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to this cd
I bought this cd from another store and lost it. I usually don't repurchase cds when I have lost them, but I had to make an exception . . I listen to this album at least once a week or so. It consists of tracks of Angelou reading her poetry, and she reads so beautifully. There are music tracks in between some of the poetry tracks and those work really well. A beautiful way to experience her poems. I'm surprised there aren't tons of reviews on this item! It's a shame if the lack of reviews means that people aren't listening to this. ... Read more
