Product Description
A liturgical drama set to music, reconstructed from a medieval manuscript in the British Museum. The edition presents a version of the work which is both historically accurate and creates a living performance. No polyphony or harmony has been added, but doubling in unison or in octaves is usedextensively. There are 15 parts for solo voices (a mixture of sopranos, tenors, baritones, basses) and a choir of sopranos and men's voices. The narration is by W. H. Auden. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An inexpensive score for a great liturgical drama
If you're a student of early music, there are various books you shouldn't be without. I'd say this is one of them; if it isn't, it comes close, and how can you beat the price? What you have here is an inexpensive score forone of the great liturgical dramas of the Middle Ages, with lyrics done invery legible calligraphy, with commentary on the play and its historicalbackground by Noah Greenberg himself. If I were to suggest improvements, they'd be two in number: first, a binding that would lie flat, and second,PLEASE update the address to which one should write for permission toperform the play.(At the very least, it should use the ZIP code that wasadopted a few years after 1958 when the book was first published.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best collections of aphorisms there is
The aphorisms collected and edited here by Auden and Kronenberger are drawn from more than four hundred of the West's major authors. The book is organized in chapters, "Humanity " "Religion and God" "Nature"" Education"" Society" "The Sexes" "Love, Marriage and Friendship" The Professions" "History " " Action" "Science" " The Arts" "States and Government" " The Life of the Mind" " Life's Minor Pleasures and Trials" " Ages of Man"
It seems almost superflous to give good examples , since every page of the work is rich with them. Who loves aphorisms will love this work. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
W.H. Auden's first ten years in the US were marked by rapid and extensive change in his life and thought. He became an American citizen, fell in love with Chester Kallman, and began to reflect on American culture and to explore the ideas of Reinhold Niebuhr and other Protestant theologians. This volume contains every piece of prose that Auden wrote during these years, incuding essays and reviews he published under a pseudonym. Most have never been reprinted in any form since their initial publication in such magazines and newspapers as "Nation", "New Republic", "Common Sense", "Vogue" and the "New York Times". Auden's prose during this period is frequently directly autobiographical even as he comments on literature, psychology, politics, and religion. The writings range from a dialogue about W.B. Yeats, through a respectful parody of Gertrude Stein to Jamesian essays on Henry James. They also include lively and often profound responses to ancient and modern history as well as to contemporary issues in politics and religion.Other highlights include writings on opera and poetry as well as reports of Auden's lectures and the text of an unfinished autobiographical book, "The Prolific and the Devourer". Throughout, Edward Mendelson's extensive editor's notes explain all contemporary and private allusions. ... Read more
