5-0 out of 5 stars Barker's best to date?
This book is my favourite of Clive Barker's to date (on a par with theoutstanding "Books of Blood"). The Liverpool born writer tellsthe story of monsters living under a cemetery and a man who is destined tobecome one of them. Later made into the film Nightbreed, this book pulls nopunches, and is considerably stronger in content than the film. HoweverBarker tells it in such a way it engrosses rather than offends, and opensup a magical world that becomes reality very quickly. Soon you realise thatthe real monsters are the humans, and your loyalties shift. For me thegreatest writing talent in the genre, Barker has a mind like no other, anddelivers big time with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't get enough of this book
Okay, okay.So I've written a review for this book all ready, but as the titles says, I just can't get enough.I love this story; it, in its own little way, changed my like.I re-read it twice a year and have done sosince 1990.I guess thats kind of pathetic, but this novel, a tale aboutkillers, monsters, love and acceptence, is my favorite.I guess I felt thedesire to write about this because of my current hobbie (I'm writing arole-playing game based on the story, with more Barker worlds and monstersthrown in for good measure.) But despite my rant, read this book.It isthrilling. It is rewarding. It is the end of this review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peering beneath the veneer of life. . .
Cabal is one of Barker's most stunning achievments. Not only does he approach the subject of the nightmare creatures that inhabit the darkest receeses of our minds but he makes them even more human to us than the monstrous enemy they all fear. . .man. Beneath the calm facade of an oldcemetary there lies an underworld of dark fantasy and wonder, Midian.Hereall of our dreams come true: immortality, shapeshifting, the freedom offlying to name a few. However there is a cost to this wonderous place forthose that inhabit this dark domain, they are eternally hunted by the baneof the supernatural, mankind. Here we come to understand their hatred andfear of us; a fear borne of prosecution for within Midian lies the verylast of the races of the moon. . .the Nightbreed. A young man, Boone ishaunted by nightmares and fantastic visions of the Nightbreed. Fearing forhis sanity he goes to a phsyciatrist in hopes of discovering the source ofthese strange visions. However the very source of the help he seeks turnsout to be a brutal serial killer that frames Boone for his own murders. After Boone is slain in a shootout with the police he awakens from thesleep of death and seeks out Midian and its dark dreams. He unwittinglybrings about the end of this sanctuary and along the way he becomes thelast hope for these amazing creatures. He is given a new mission and a newname: Cabal. He is their messiah and their only hope to escape the horrorthat is mankind. Join us in exploring the dark avenues of our wildestfantasies where one can change into the form of a wolf, take to sky andrake undying claws across the moon or where even a dead man can be a hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This was the first Barker book I read and I was hooked from the beginning. I loved how the story moved and all the twists it had. I liked how Boone took it upon himself to restore the night breed. Keep 'em comin' Clive!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Barker's Best
Cabal is one of Clive Barker's most imaginative stories...adapted into a so-so film called"Nightbreed" that didn't have enough of a budget to convey the ideas in the story properly.

Supposedly, theadventures of Boone are supposed to continue in another book, but Cliveseems to have abandonded both this series and the next book of "TheArt."

If you haven't read any Clive, there are GREATstories inthis book.Highest rating. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit strange but entertaining
If you buy this audiobook thinking you will hear a great horror story you will be disappointed.Though it has it's horific moments the book is mainly about the trial of the devil and whether or not he deserves to goback to heaven. The story takes us through various periods in historyshowing tragic events and letting you decide whether or not the devil wasthe engineer behind the events or it was merely man's mistakes andjudgement. The jury listens and then has to reach a verdict.Throughouthis trial however, the devil pleads, cajoles and even seduces variousmembers of the court so that they can see things his way.He even killsone or two of them for fun. Its an entertaining story, a bit campy at timesbut funny as well.I would not classify it as a horror story though.Theproduction is well done as is all Sci-fi channel's works and the acting istop notch. The devil in particular has a very sexy voice which truly reelsyou in.I wouldn't mind spending a few hours in hell.give it a listen ifyou are a lover of sci-fi, fantasy but it will not scare you that much. the ending is a bit of a shocker and the encounter between the devil andJesus is helarious. It may be a bit offensive to those who are religiousbut not by much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid and Entertaining Audio Production
Well produced and acted audio play covers the trial of Lucifer himself as he petitions to be returned to heaven. The question for the jury {12 good ghosts and true} to consider is this "Has the devil been theinstigator of misery and depredation in human history, or merely a passiveobserver and collector?"

The writing is uneven at times and theconclusion will not satisfy all {more likely or not it will enrage devoutChristians} but the strong performances and effective foley effects andbackground score make for a worthwhile addition to anyone's audio library. ... Read more

Product Description
The magical tale of ill-fated lovers lost among worlds teetering on the edge of destruction, where their passion holds the key to escape.

There has never been a book like Imajica. Transforming every expectation offantasy fiction with its heady mingling of radical sexuality and spiritual anarchy, it has carried its millions of readers into regions of passion and philosophy that few books have even attempted to map. It's an epic in everyway; vast in conception, obsessively detailed in execution, and apocalyptic in its resolution. A book of erotic mysteries and perverse violence. A book ofancient, mythological landscapes and even more ancient magic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vast and sprawlnig, but I loved both books
It sounds corny, but the time I spent reading both books remains special, for some reason.I think back and remember how engrossed I was and how much I enjoyed them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yawn
I was getting ancy waiting for the third Abarat book, so I bought this one to tide me over. Big mistake. I was extremely dissapointed after reading this one. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Barker fan, but Imajica was slow, hard to get through, and generally uninteresting. Maybe it isn't fair to try to compare Imajica to Abarat, but there it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clive Barkers Best
I started reading Clive Barker with his Books of Blood. His short stories were incredibly imaginative and absolutely extreme in the visuals they caused to dance across the eye in your mind.Imajica, in my most humble opinion, is the book that has thus far served as the pinnacle of Mr. Barker's writing. The Maestro, Gentle, Judith, all of them are so well fleshed out you feel you know them by the end of the book. One of the books of the art, which included The Great and Secret show and Everville, Imajica stands out from the others in ways not easily explained, but all too easily felt.Clive Barkers ability to tap into the places that exist inside you that hold your fear, your awe and your dreams makes him, in a sense, a master manipulator of emotions, but when you've finished reading Imajica, you will be glad for having giving yourself over to his ministrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
The story focuses on Gentle and his mystif companion, Pie'oh'pah's quest to find an answer for the souls of the world, and leads to Gentle discovering that his part in the Imajica, a place of reconciled dominions, is greater than he could ever imagine. Meanwhile, his ex, Judith also finds out she is no mere bystander and the gaping holes in their memories are explained.

The pace doesn't slow. Once in a while though, I wished it did, just to emphasise more on the differences between each dominion because I had the feeling that I was still on Earth, going the distance of France to Germany. The scale of Gentle and Pie's travels seemed almost minimal to me - not as if they were crossing entire worlds. The only difference between the dominions that stuck with me is that the 4th dominion has green-gold sky and the 5th has blue. And I already knew half of this fact. Having said that, too much lingering on the little details can be tiring and confusing, so this wasn't much of a problem.
Why Judith is obsessed over is beyond me. She is the object of a bloodline of lust. Yes, she's supposed to be pretty, but so are a lot of women. Her character does not seem as intriguing as the others. Even the God of the Imajica whose appearance hardly makes a scratch in the book was more captivating. Also, sometimes there is the impression that the characters know more than what they're letting on, but by the time the book ends, what exactly it is that they know isn't made clear.

One thing I wasn't expecting is the romance - or at least the scale of it. It's beautiful, touching and cruel. Who would have thought a womaniser such as Gentle could be tamed by a creature with no fixed gender? The plot is intricate, woven with skill and mesmerising in its imaginative scope.
Whoever describes this book as epic isn't joking. You won't even care for its flaws when you're done. It's stunning and it's one of those books you'll never forget.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take a few days off and finish it in one go !
It's a great read ! Too great to publish it in one (paperback)volume, even !!! I recommend that you get the two volumes and read them in one go, because the story has a lot of sub-stories and side-stories, a lot of characters and (unless you make lists or have a really good memory), it might all become a little confusing is it takes you too long to read it.

Imajica consists of 5 dominions, Earth being the fifth and unreconciled one, the other four are reconciled and you can travel freely between then - except for the first dominion, because thats were god lives.

200 years ago, a handfull of great magicians tried to reconcile the fifth dominion with the other four, but they failed and almost destroyed all five dominions. Those on earth who helped them and survived, vowed to gather all magical books in the world and hide them, so this could never be attempted again.
Now, Judith (a woman who can't remember anything that happend more then 10 years ago) is trying to escape an assassin her husband hired and gets help from her former lover Gentle (who has the same memory problem) and thus sets in motion a great journey for the both of them, trough the dominions, to discover who they really are.

The first book won't give you all the answers, since it was originally published as one volume, so get them both and read them in one go ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An actually frightening one
This collection of short weird stories is one of my favorite books. It is the first Clive Barker's book I read and since then I am a Clive Barker fan. All the stories have a witty plot, which catches you by the neck anddoesn`t release you until you read the very last word. The atmospherecreated in each of the stories is so mysterious, like a living nightmare. The characters are excellently psychologically depicted. It is reallyaddicting, I couldn`t stop reading, - so, if you are having your exams, Idon`t recommend it to you! As one of the few Pop artists to work primarily with sculpture for over forty years, Barker's creative engagement forms a particularly important part of the Pop Art story. Today, his art continues to surprise with the immediacy and sense of fun that made it so accessible from the start. This publication is the first comprehensive study about Barker's sculpture. It opens with an essay by Marco Livingstone, whose many publications include a definitive study on Pop Art. Thoroughly researched and lavishly illustrated, this book is essential to anybody with an interest in Pop Art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Redefining comics, two Books of Blood stories at a time
By the time Book Three was published in 1990, the Tapping the Vein series had really hit its stride.Clive Barker's horrific creations from his Books of Blood series suited themselves remarkably well for comic (graphic novel) adaptation, and the illustrations themselves seemed to improve with each new release. It's just too bad that the work stopped after a fourth published issue; one would have liked to see all of the Books of Blood translated into this colorful visual medium.

Midnight Mean Train may well be the goriest story to be found among Barker's numerous horror short stories, so we're most fortunate to have it included in this collection.Chuck Wagner and Fred Burke put together an excellent adaptation of the original story, and the illustrations by Denys Cowan and Michael Davis are right up there with the best in the whole series, but it's just not humanly possible to convey the prolonged sense of menace and heart-palpitating fear that define Barker's original story. Thus, the adaptation doesn't kick you in the gut the way the short story does. What you do get in Tapping the Vein, however, is as good an adaptation as anyone could ever hope to do in the graphic novel format.

When you look at some of the stories that were left out of this series, Scape-Goats is sort of a questionable choice for inclusion.Scape-Goats is a little island of death story, the most interesting aspect of which is its viewpoint; it is not often that Barker tells a tale from the first-person perspective of a woman.I think it has a vaguely Lovecraftian feel to it, but it's not as shocking as the other stories in the collection. This was predominantly a one-man job, as Bo Hampton both adapted and illustrated the story. The artwork is really quite impressive, and it stands as a revealing counterpart to Midnight Mean Train, which is dominated by dark themes throughout (literally and figuratively) - Scape-Goats waylays its characters during the light of day.The artwork fit the stories beautifully, and that is what makes Tapping the Vein Book 3 a true delight for fans of Clive Barker. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but nothing like the original
The third collection of Hellraiser comics has, as always, Clive Barker's name in its title, but Barker himself hasn't contributed with any of the scripts. His only contribution is a short preface, where he expresses his great pride in having created the short story The Hellbound Heart which over the years has grown into a life of its own and gained millions of fans all over the world. In 2006 The Scarlet Letters will be published - Barker's return to the world of Hellraiser - and fans of Pinhead are already trembling in anticipation.

But until then, fans will have to do with whatever is available right now, and the comics will disappoint few if any or the real fans. None of the stories are of the quality of Barker's own stories, but it's not far from it, and in most cases the stories are as well-written as the drawings are beautiful. But not only that; in between every story the reader is treated with a little gallery of Hellraiser-based art, and these pieces are indeed a must for any fan of macabre art.

The story named "The Tontine" is by far the most interesting story in the collection, with its creepy storyline and amazingly dramatic drawings. The great thing about high-quality comics is that the reader happily returns again and again to re-read them and find new things to marvel of, and the Hellraiser collections are definitely worth reading if one appreciates classical horror. It's a fact that none of the stories are as good as The Hellbound Heart, but still, the collection is worth reading and can be highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A COLLECTION OF DEPRAVITY AND DESPAIR
I first became aware of Clive Barker back in the late 1980's when a friend turned me onto his Books of Blood series.Barker was really unlike anyone at the time as we went right for the throat with a raw, visceral, and yes quite graphic style.Barker's had several of his stories turned into film but the most famous was the Hellraiser films.Barker actually directed the first film and wrote the screenplay. In the 90's Marvel Comics Epic line had a Hellraiser comic series and Checker Books has been doing a fantastic job of collecting these fantastic stories into trade paperback format. This is the third collection and includes fifteen stories from some of the top artists and writers in the world of comics including: Jan Strnad, John Bolton, Berni Wrightson, Scott Hampton, and many more. This massive trade also includes dozens of full page illustrations, darkly complementing the stories within.

Among the stories in this volume that rank as standouts:

"To Prepare a Face" by Jan Strnad and Mark Chiarello is a silent film era story about (although never mentioned by name) silent horror star Lon Chaney Sr., the "Man of a Thousand Faces".We'll find that it takes more than just great make-up to turn Chaney into the memorable characters like the Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Phantom of the Opera".

"The Warm Red" by Strnad and Berni Wrightson concerns a middle-aged con-woman who looks to bilk a country hick out of his home because she knows that a development country will be soon building a theme park in the area. The temptress soon finds herself making another deal for her very life...with a Cenobite!

Larry Wachowski of Matrix fame provides the story for "Closets" about an abusive mother who locks up her young son in a basement closet, all alone with nothing...except a lamentation puzzle box.

"Under the Knife" by Ron Wolfe and Bill Reinhold ties in the Jack the Ripper legend with a modern day serial slayer with a reporter caught in the middle between the two bloody fiends.

An obvious Donald Trump-like character in "I in the Pyramid" has become the world's first trillionaire but can only maintain his status as a recruiter for hell with the largest pyramid scheme ever perpetrated.

"The Tontine" by Scott Hampton.Several friends enter into a tontine, a pact in which the last survivor will gain the jackpot. The friends meet year after year to play a deadly game of Russian Roulette until the last survivor gets his just rewards.

"The Sweet Science"The heavyweight boxing champion is bored as he seeks a real challenge. When he unknowingly unlocks a puzzle cube within the boxing ring, he's faced with a greater challenge than he could ever imagine.

As you would expect, this is a book aimed at mature audiences due to the subject matter as well as the grisly illustrations. These stories represent an expansion of the Hellraiser mythos that is even better than all but the first couple of films. They provide some great background on the motivations of these demons, particularly Pinhead, who takes a starring role in a few of the tales, including one where he is placed on trial by his rivals in hell. The art is uniformly great throughout and it's quite interesting to see different artist's interpretations of the Cenobites.A definite must have item for fans of Clive Barker or the Hellraiser films.
