Editorial Review

Product Description
Critics who hold that postmodernist art is essentially non-adversarial and apolitical, Paul Maltby contends, have ignored the historical context of the postmodern focus on problems of language. In "Dissident Postmodernists", Maltby examines a major current of postmodernist fiction that can be read as a dissident response to developments of late capitalism that have transformed the field of language and communications. Among Maltby's models of dissident postmodernist writings are "Gravity's Rainbow", "The Public Burning", "Snow White" and more recent publications like "Vineland" and "Spanking the Maid". In a series of readings, he examines the ways in which these works respond to the erosion of the public sphere, the elevation of functionalist discourse, the enlargement of the state propaganda network, the corporate management of mass communications, and the diffusion of concept-poor language forms which limit social understanding. Alert to such developments, Maltby argues, dissident postmodernists such as Barthelme, Coover and Pynchon write with politicized perceptions of language and a heightened awareness of language as a medium of social integration. ... This looks redundant to the lower-priced The slightly irregular fire engine: Or, The hithering thithering djinn. They are apparently the same edition. The seller should explain why this particular offer deserves the higher price.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite children's books.
The Slightly Irregular Fire Engine has been one of my favorite books all of my life. The illustrations are a wonderful hodgepodge of old etchings which tell you just enough of the story to get your imagination going. The story is fun and whimsical. I could make endless variations of this storywhen I was young for hours of entertainment. If you have a child this isdefinitely a creative must have for your library. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
When Donald Barthelme died at the age of 54, he was perhaps the most imitated (if not emulated) practitioner of American literature. Caustic, slyly observant, transgressive, verbally scintillating, Barthelme's essays, stories, and novels redefined a generation of American letters and remain unparalleled for the way they capture our national pastimes and obsessions, but most of all for the way they caputure the strangeness of life.
Not-Knowing amounts to the posthumous manifesto of one of our premier literary modernists. Here are Barthelme's thoughts on writing (his own and others); his observations on art, architecture, film, and city life; interviews, including two never previously published; and meditations on everything from Superman III to the art of rendering "Melancholy Baby" on jazz banjolele. This is a rich and eclectic selection of work by the man Robert Coover has called "one of the great citizens of contemporary world letters." ... Read more

A "brilliant paraphrase" of the familiar fairy tale, Snow White (Barthelme's first novel) appeared in the New Yorker. A fore-runner of experimental and meta-fiction, Barthelme "has been responsible for a series of stories so distinctive and original as to redefine the possibilities of the form." ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Red Krayola (formerly The Red Crayola) was a psychedelic, avant-garde rock band from Houston, Texas, formed by art students at the University of St. Thomas (Texas) in 1966. The band was led by singer/guitarist and visual artist Mayo Thompson, along with drummer Frederick Barthelme (brother of novelist Donald Barthelme) and Steve Cunningham. Their work prefigured punk and the no wave scene in 1980s New York City. They made noise rock, psychedelia and occasionally folk/country songs and instrumentals in a DIY fashion, an approach that presaged the lo-fi aesthetic of many 1990s US indie rock groups. ...
