Product Description
The study of women's writing has been long neglected by a male establishement both in academic circles and beyond. As a result, many women writers have either been unfairly negelcted, or have been marginalized in some way, so that their true influence and importance has been ignored. Other women writers have been accepted by male critcs and academics, but on terms which seem, to many women readers of this generation, to be false or simplistic. This series is designed to help in a re-assessment of women's writing. All the books are written by women. Editorial Review

Product Description

While Emily Bronte is best known for her masterpiece, Wuthering Heights, her poetry and French essays have received scant critical attention. As lyrical and inventive as any poet of her era, Bronte infused her work with an overriding concern for the condition of mankind, the meaning of life, and the ever-present questions that man asks about the nature of the universe, divine creation, and the fate of humanity. In her reinterpretation of Bronte's works, Jill Dix Ghnassia scrutinizes the writer's metaphysical questioning throughout the canon. By dividing Bronte's poetry into four chronological periods, Ghnassia shows how Bronte's writing evolved and matured during her short career, culminating in one of the most haunting and powerful novels of the Victorian era.

Each essay concentrates on a single area of thought or study of direct relevance to the type of essay students will be required to write, and uses textual evidence and quotations in support of the conclusions. A variety of approaches are used in the essays, to illustrate the various ways in which literary evidence can be organized to argue a viewpoint. Furnished with a detailed introduction about women and poetic identity between 1830 and 1890, the volume includes an extensive bibliography suggesting further reading in what is a rapidly expanding field of criticism. ... Product Description
Emily Jane Brontë (1818-1848) was a British novelist and poet. She published under the masculine pen name Ellis Bell. In 1824, her family moved to Haworth, where Emily's father was perpetual curate, and it was in these surroundings that her literary oddities flourished. It was the discovery of Emily's poetic talent by her family that led her and her sisters, Charlotte and Anne, to publish a joint collection of their poetry in 1846, Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. To evade contemporary prejudice against female writers, the Brontë sisters adopted androgynous first names. All three retained the first letter of their first names: Charlotte became Currer Bell and Anne became Acton Bell. She is now best remembered for her only novel Wuthering Heights (1847); which was published as two volumes of a three volume set (the last volume being Agnes Grey by her sister Anne). Its innovative structure somewhat puzzled critics. Although it received mixed reviews when it first came out, the book subsequently became an English literary classic. ... Read more
