Book Lover
My daughter loves books and especially Arthur books.I asked her if she would rather have Princess books or Arthur books and she said Arthur books. I was really surprised because she loves everything Princess. I love these books also. They are the perfect lenght and teach lessons. I got her two more for Christmas, I want to get her all of them.

The Bedtime Stories Really Help
I have read this book and when my babysitter came, she used to read a story and I would go to sleep. It is like magic. Sometimes, I read the book to myself and notice the drawings and the fairy tales. I think of the colors that I see and see what it reminds me of. But it really does work on me.

Disjointed, But Fun
Arthur doesn't turn in his homework, then lies to his teacher about it. For this, he must visit the principal's office ... tomorrow. That night, Arthur dreams of a pickle world because of the pickle he is in. He wakes from his dream, does his homework, admits he lied, and turns it in a day late.
The actual writing is disjointed, as most popular character books are. This didn't seem to bother the kids, since they asked for it to be read several more times. It would be a hard read for a very beginning reader, as it is a level 3 reader.

NOT FOR 4 YEAR OLDS!
I purchased this book for a child's 4th birthday.I was going by the age estimate provided in the item description, which says Ages 4-8.Well, the book is actually for Grades 1-3, which obviously does not include 4 year olds.The content is appropriate, but there are not many 4 year olds who will be able to read any of this book on their own.So if you want a book that your young child can start reading on their own, look elsewhere.

Pickles, stickers and reading fun
This is a great book for teaching reading. Arthur is a favored character in our house , and the peel and place stickers really help little ones with the concepts of learning to read. It also has a whole sticker sheet thatkids can illustrate their own story with. Marc Brown, through Arthur, canalways view the world through a child's eyes, which helps parents toremember that things can seem alot different down there! I highly recommendthis and all Arthur/D.W. books!

Fun Shivers For the Primary Grades
This is an excellent collection of poems and rhymes edited and illustrated by that friendly aardvark Arthur's creator Marc Brown.The drawings are in the same style as the Arthur stories and some of Arthur's friends even make appearances lightening the mood even more from scary to silly.The ominous looking but genial Binky Barnes stars in an especially cute poem.My favorite nightmare defeating rhyme "The Adventures of Isabel" by Ogden Nash is included and makes a great read aloud as does the entire book.

This was a book of children's poems about things that little kids are scared of.It takes those fears and turns them into funny things for children to read.This book took a collection of poems and short story about things that many people think about around Halloween.It talks about things like goblins and scary things lurking around in the dark.This is a book that children can read and laughs about things that they think are scary.
I like this book because it gives children a way to read about things that they think are scary and realize that maybe those things aren't so scary after all.If you can get a child to laugh about something that they thought was scary then they may just be able to keep laughing about it instead of letting it frighten them.I think the person who compiled these poems and short stories into this book for child to enjoy really wanted the children to be able to laugh about these things.Many children have fears of things that can't really hurt them and this allows them to see that and laugh about it.

Are kids really scared silly?
Marc Brown's Scared Silly! features many scary poems, riddles, jokes and stories.They are by many different authors that each tells about a scary story and about how they deal with those.Scared Silly is filled with many bright and bold colors throughout the book.This coloration undermines the scariness of the book, and offers comfort to a child reading these stories.Another aspect that takes away from the book being scary is the stories themselves. The selections portray the characters as comedic.This also makes light of the fact that the book is supposed to scare little children. One of the stories called "One Hungry Monster" by Susan Heyboer O'Keefe tells of a common fear young children have.It is about monsters underneath a little girl's bed and roaming around her house.They demand food from her and mess up her house.This would normally terrify a young child, but Marc Brown offers relief trough his pictures, colors, and the outcome of the story.The illustrations on the pages of "One Hungry Monster" are very bright and colorful.They also portray the monsters as silly, with wide eyes and their tongues sticking out.An article from Time Warner Bookmark about Scared Silly says, "Marc Brown has collected an array of lovable ghosts, ghouls, and witches, not to mention a pack of deliciously horrid monsters and a parcel of cowardly bullies."When the girl gives them the food, they play with it and put it all over themselves.The end of the story offers comfort as well.Instead of the girl being scared and running away, she told the monsters that she was disappointed because they left her house in a mess.It says that the "ten sorry monsters" disappear back into the chimney.They also have sad looks on their faces, knowing they had been defeated.These things help a young reader cope with a common fear by dealing with it in a comedic manner. This way of coping with scary things seems to be what Marc Brown was going for when he wrote this book. Another story in which the comedy overshadows the scariness of this book is "Witches Four" by Marc Brown. Witches are normally scary things for a child to imagine.They have always been associated with being mean and scary.In this story, Marc Brown conveys a group of four witches doing everyday things like brushing their teeth, eating, washing their faces, and getting dressed.The illustrators show the witches as old with glasses and gray hair.They look like grandmothers, which makes them likeable.Like the other stories, this one is also filled with many bright and bold colors. The witches are smiling on the pages as well.By the time the story says that the witches are "dressed for spooking," Marc Brown has taken away the scary stereotype of a witch. The stories, poems, riddles, and jokes in Scared Silly are meant to downplay the fact that witches, monsters, sea creatures, and old people are sometimes scary to small children.An article from Time Warner Bookmark says that Scared Silly is "a collection of poems and stories designed to help young readers scale their fears down to size by laughing out loud at the things that make them scared silly."Marc Brown and the other authors use bright colors and comedic characters to offer another perspective of things that normally carry a negative stereotype.

Surprisingly good poems
These poems are great read-alouds. My 7-year-old daughter loves to hear them read and to read them herself. This book has inspired me to buy more children's poetry books. We especially love the poem "The Adventures of Isabel." This should be required reading for all little girls. My daughter, who hates and fears her second-grade teacher, was inspired and strengthened by this poem. I know we will read this book many times for a long time to come.

A not-so-scary Halloween book for young children
This is a reprint of a book originally published in 1994.It's a fun collection of mostly poetry with a few short stories, riddles, jokes and even a song thrown in.The entries were written by a variety of well-known children's authors and colorfully illustrated by Marc Brown (who is best known for his "Arthur" books).

The collection is about "scary" things such as witches, monsters, ghosts, and more, although most of the entries are humorous rather than frightening. A few of the poems deliver just enough menace to give a child some delighted shivers.

Good learning tool
This is a very thourough and informational book that kids can read on their own or with a parent. I have noticed that my 9 year old son has read it on his own and he feels more comfortable asking me questions when he has a reference point. This book is purely from an anatomy standpoint, it is not written from a religious perspective, so I would recommend that it is paired with other books discussing the Lords plan for sex (marrage etc).

What's The Big Secret-Talking About Sex With Boys and Girls
This is the most wonderful book on introducing sex to your children. My 10yr old son was a little confused over a few things, and this book includes age-appropriate dialog and pictures which helped clarify everyting. Beginning with how boys and girls begin to separate themselves in sports, the concept when boys and girls become curious, anatomy, dressing differently, puberty, conception and all the way to what happens inside "Mommy's" tummy during pregnancy. The MOST WONDERFUL book I've seen on this subject--great for kids 8-11yrs (or maybe 12yrs). Both me and my son loved this book!!! I would say a MUST for any parent!!!

Good Information/ age appropriate
I enjoyed sharing this book with my daughter. Everything is presented in a sensitive and age appropriate manner. I purchased "Where Did I Come From" by Peter Mayle at the same time and found it to be completely opposite of this book (and thus did not end up sharing it with my child.)"What's the Big Secret" helps guide a parent through the awkward questions that children (either boys or girls) have about their bodies and babies. I highly recommend it!

Choose another book--this one conflicts with moral values
We feel it vital to teach our young children about such topics as soon as they are ready to fully understand them (age 8 in our opinion) and this we have done, but this particular book contains too many conflicting moral issues for us to use as a text to share with our children. A much better choice for our family was "Amazing You" and "Changing You". We had mild differences with these texts, but they proved to be great discussion starters with the children. "What's the Big Secret" went too far across vital moral lines for us to even consider using as discussion material. To each his own, but we wanted to post in case others wanted a heads-up.

My 4 year old son loves this!
My son is really into the Arthur books and he especially likes the ones that create suspense.This book does the job great - not scarey, just suspenseful for about 2 pages, then it ends on a great note. Good for young children to overcome their fear of Halloween!
Arthur the Aardvark is having trouble falling asleep as it is the night before Halloween and his house is decorated to look incredibly spooky.

When he finally does fall alseep and wakes up the next morning,things get even worse when his annoying little sister D.W scares him as she is dressed in her Halloween costume ready to go trick or treating.

Arthur feels embarrassed and irritatedthat he has to take D.W trick or treating with him because he'll be "the only one who has to drag my baby sister along".

When Arthur,his friends and D.W eventually go trick or treating,they are all scared to go into 'the Witch's House'.

But D.W breaks her candy bag,Arthur has to pick it up,and when he turns round D.W has gone into the Witch's House...meaning Arthur will have to go in after her!

Disappointed
I was looking for a book to console a child about needing to share their childhood with the newly born, but this one didn't provide this. The material and the illustrations seemed flat. I couldn't imagine why a child would spark to this book.

Arthur's Baby is Cute

"Arthur's Baby" -- Not the Best of Arthur
I don't know which came first, the TV script or the book.But this is one of those situations in which the PBS video is better than the book.

While `Arthur's Baby' is a good story, in book form it fails to *bring home the message* the way that the video does.In the video, considerable time is spent showing that the baby is comfortable with Arthur's holding her, and that Arthur has some `basic' baby knowledge that D.W. just can't have because she is so much younger.

The book text just doesn't get this across.The baby begins to cry and in 8 lines after Arthur picks up Kate, the story comes to a conclusion with an unceremonious burp.

Three Stars.Okay book, but if you will have to explain the message to all but the most adroit kids.

Arthur's Baby
This book begins with Arthur's parents telling him and his siter D.W. that they are expecting a new baby in about six months. D.W. is terribly excited. She can't wait for the baby to come but Arthur isn't so sure of the whole thing.
The next day at school he talks to his friends about it, and they don't reassure him of anything. In fact they make him even more doubtful than before. Binky tells him that he should get some earplugs,or he'll never sleep because the baby will always be crying in the middle of the night.
Buster tells him that he can forget about playing afterschool because he'll have to go home and babysit everyday.
Muffy tells him that he'll have to change all the dirty diapers that the baby makes.
Francine tells him that he will probably start talking like the baby does.
For the next few months all Arthur sees are babies everywhere they are all he thinks about and not in a good way.
One day after school Arthur comes home and Arthur's mom shows him their baby photo album. He sees different pictures of him and D.W. when they were babies.
The next Saturday morning Arthur sees his mom packing a suitcase and he asks her where she is going. She tells him that she isn't going anywhere they just have to be ready if the baby decides to come.
Sunday morning Arthur goes down to the kitchen to get some breakfast, but instead of his mom standing at the stove, his Grandma Thora was there. She told Arthur and D.W. that they had a new baby sister and that after they had eaten breakfast they would go to the hospital to see her.
And so they did. They met their dad at the hospital and he took them to the nursery part of the hospital and he shows them Kate, their new baby sister.
On Tuesday Arthur's mom and dad brought Kate home. The doorbell was constantly rinnging and it was always more presents for the baby.
That night they were in Kate's nursery and Arthur's mom asked him if he would like to hold Kate, but he said "I'd rather look." D.W. said that it was for the better because Arthur didn't know beans about babies.
A few days later Arthur's mom needed help and she asked Arthur to watch Kate while she went upstairs. D.W. said that she would take care of everything. The doorbell rang and D.W. opened the door and some of Arthur's friends were there. D.W. told them that Arhtur coulnd't play, but they could come see her baby.
D.W. was very defensive and she told everyone not to get too close to her baby and to be quiet because her baby was sleeping. Then Kate woke up and D.W. said that Kate wanted her bottle. Kate drank her bottle very fast and when she was done she began to cry. D.W. told everyone that she had it under control. She kissed Kate on the head, but that didn't stop the crying, she bounced Kate up and down but Kate wailed louder,then Arthur picked up Kate and patted her on the back. Kate let out a big burp and Arthur told everyone that everything was all right now.
I thought this was a great book especially for a family that is expecting and already has one or more children. It tells kids that there is no reason to exclude yourself and not be a part of the new baby and it tells them that even if you think you can't you can help with the new baby. I recommend this to any family that is expectin and would urge them to read it to their kids and fully explain what they can do to help when the baby arrives.

A great book for expecting a third child
This was such a great book for an older sibling expecting a baby brother or sister as well as for expecting a third child in the family. It really touched on what children might be wonderring or worrying about, helping both the child and the parent to open up and discuss these fears andconcerns. Review for "Arthur Helps Out"
I used this book, "Arthur Helps Out," in the work my therapy dogs do with children who have reading difficulty.Two students are "arthur" fans and both loved this book.Because the story is so good, they work very hard to be able to read the entire book without much help.All of the books in the 'arthur" arthur series are very good, but this one, in particular has a great message for 2nd graders.The children can learn by example.I highly recommend the "Arthur" book series and this book in particular.

Kids Can Relate to Arthur
I have purchased several Arthur books for my grandson and he loves them. The illustrations and text provide a lot of opportunities for questions and comments which really gets kids "into" the stories. The story subjects are about everyday life with which kids can identify. I love the fact that all the Arthur books seem to have a lesson about making good choices.

Hard Work Can Be Tiring
"Arthur Helps Out" is one of the most recent in a series of large paperback "Arthur" stories targeted at slightly younger audiences than the Arthur Adventure books, or the chapter books based on the TV episodes.

"Arthur Helps Out" finds Arthur wanting to go out and play, but it turns out there's some work he's been putting off that has now caught up to him. He has to clean out his room, give Pal a bath, deal with the trash and more. Only once he's completed all of this can he go play, but all of the work is rather tiring.

Like all other releases in this set, all pages are fully illustrated. The story is fairly simple, but good enough to hold interest. The illustrations are also fairly well-detailed, with things to read and small side-gags.

Not what I expected...
This book is not what I expected and I immediately got rid of it. In my opinion, it's only appropriate for those in an "ugly" divorce.There are pictures my four year old said were scary and "I don't want to see this anymore, Mom."There are pictures of Daddy/Mommy dinosaurs teeth showing fighting, one of mom with spilled pill bottles & drinking a martini, etc.It addresses parents speaking negatively of each other, hurting themselves or each other, putting the child in the middle, dating and re-marrying and things of that nature.While this may fit certain situations, I was looking for a book to simply explain that mom and dad were married and divorce, you have two homes, etc.My ex and I happen to get along very well, share custody with no issues, and my son was too young to remember us living together or married.It simply didn't fit my circumstances.In my opinion, if you have an even remotely amicable divorce situation, this is not the appropriate book.I also wouldn't recommend it for kids under the age of six, personally.

inappropriate for kids
I thought this book was terrible for children.The picture of the mother with empty booze bottles & pill bottles was offensive.The mention of parents arguements can be "violent" was disturbing, and the image of dad's girlfriend with the big blonde hair & eyeshadow was a bit over the top playing into stereotypes.These were just a few of the problems I found with the book.I thought that perhaps I was being sensitive so I shared the book with my son's daycare director and an elementary level special education teacher.Both agreed that the book was offensive and inappropriate and would not use it for children.

Wish I knew it years ago
This was recommended to me by a family therapist. I bought it for my daughter to help her with her kids but I read it first. I wish I'd had it myself when I was divorcing her father. It would have helped me explain much better thandid

This author hits the nail on the Head!
This book addresses a difficult and scary subject in an approachable manner for young kids.A gentle and straightforward treatment of FAQs.I recommend this to anyone who wants to broach the subject with children up to pre-teen (especially if they are familiar with the Arthur TV series). It is a great way to start a conversation on a subject that worries kids.

Divorce for Kids
I thought the book really broke down the whole divorce process to a child at their level of understanding. It helped me tremendously when talking to my son about what was going on with his mom and me. He really liked the ideas presented in the stories and it helped him look at the divorce in a new light. It helped him understand that this was not his fault, as well as, understanding that how the family will be reconfigured in a sense. It an easy and enjoyable read for young children and can really help parents sit down and explain the divorce process to the kids. Powerful Story About Censorship
This second Arthur TV Chapter Book is an insightful look at attempts to censor literature read by children. Adapted by Stephen Krensky, based on a TV Story by Terence Taylor, "Arthur and the Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club" finds the kids of Elwood City shocked.

They've been waiting eagerly outside the library on a Saturday for the newest release in their favorite book series, "The Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club." Just when they think they're about to get the new book, the librarian Ms. Paige Turner appears with a startling announcement --- due to concerns by a parents group called P.A.W.S., all books in the series have been pulled from the library shelves.

After a discussion of past times that they wanted something and didn't give up, Arthur and his friends formulate a plan of action. They get to work, but will their efforts be enough to return the books to the shelves? And just what does this P.A.W.S. group have against these books anyway?

This book was released in 1998 and the "Scare-Your-Pants-Off" books largely resemble the "Goosebumps" series by R.L. Stine. But readers will most likely be reminded of the fervor of fans of the "Harry Potter" series and the attempts that have been made to censor it. Regardless of where the reader might stand, this book has strong lessons about standing up for what you believe in and taking the time to know all the facts before making any decisions.

I give this book four stars , because it was funny. I think it was funny because of the characters expresions.Sometimes it got boring.I would recomend it to someone because I liked it very much and it was funny .

Examining censorship

I have used “Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club” in my own classroom many times and found that it’s a great way to stimulate conversation and thinking among my students (one cryptically hinted that maybe we should ban THIS book as well!!).My point in using it as a social studies tool isn’t to agree or disagree with students so much as it is to get them to THINK—- “tell me your feelings about censorship, but back it up with reasoning and research” is how I address the issue.This in turn allows the student not only to voice their own opinion, but to examine their feelings and opinions as well; too many times in our culture we allow other folks to do our thinking for us.

Mr. Brown has done an excellent job of taking a very complicated issue in our society and presenting it to young readers in an understandable and intelligent way.I appreciate and applaud authors who not only aim to entertain their readers, but encourage them to think about themselves and their world.Hats off, Mr. Brown!!You’ve done it again!! ... Arthur's Teacher Trouble
Marc Brown creates the Arthur adventure, Arthur's Teacher Trouble with a moral in mind. Also it proves that if you work hard and give it your all, you'll be more successful. The book is told for children to understand that a little hard work gets you somewhere. With no effort at all, you won't come out with your best.

Arthur gets stuck with a hard teacher. The teacher starts out tough on the students, assigning homework right away. Arthur isn't very confident in himself and isn't used to the work and extra effort that he has to give to 3rd grade. With all of his hard work he actually gets awarded with something even better...and by reading this book you'll be sure to find out!

Arthur is my favorite character in this particular Arthur book. He isn't very confident in himself, but we all relate to that. And in the end we sometimes get surprised by unexpected turns.

This game is great for young computer-users!Each page has at least 15 "interactions" -- i.e. clicking on the salt shakers in thekitchen makes them dance.The story can read itself to you are you canread it silently.Even clicking on one word makes the computer say it. Great for children just learning to read.However, using it TOO many timescan get tiring...after all, it is just a computerized book.Great valuefor the money!
