Great preaching and exposition of the holy scriptures. Bunyans writing is one of a kind. These volumes are for a serious student of the bible.

1-0 out of 5 stars FALSE ADVERTISING
The above Title of this book clearly states "(3 Volume Set)" and yet I only received the 3rd volume. The ISBN that they have listed is for the 3 volume set and not just one volume.I called Amazon (actually they called me, it was nifty) and complained. They saw that it was a mistake, seemingly a common one judging by what some people have already said here. And now they are sending me all 3 volumes. My real complaint is that now I have to wait an entire month before receiving it and I needed volume 1 for school!!!Can't beat the price, so I will have to borrow a book until mine arrives. If this happens to you just call Amazon and force them to send you all 3 books because the ISBN is for a 3 volume set and not just one volume!! DONT LET THEM FOOL YOU!!

5-0 out of 5 stars MAKE SURE YOUR ORDER IS THE (3 VOLUME SET)!
If you are paying close to eighty dollars, make sure that your order says (3 Volume Set).If not, then you are only recieving volume one!

4-0 out of 5 stars only first of series
When you order this, you only get Volume 1 of a 3-volume set. Also, the type is very small. Otherwise, I like Bunyan and I like having his works collected together...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Contents Are ...
"The Works of John Bunyan", edited by George Offor

This review intends to inform readers of the contents of these three volumes so they may buy these books without the risk of guessing.Fortunately for me I guessed correctly!

To answer your first question, reader: Yes, "Pilgrim's Progress" IS INCLUDED in volume 3!Part I, Christian's journey, begins on page 89 after an 88 page introduction by the editor.Part II, Christiana's journey begins on page 168.And part III, The Life and Death of Mr. Badman, begins later in the volume on page 586. All parts are included.(Note that the latter is not commonly included as a part of "Pilgrim's Progress" in most books.)

Having said the above, if you are *only* looking for "Pilgrim's Progress", especially parts I and II, then these collected works are not for you. These books are physically HEAVY to hold, much too heavy for comfortable reading; you will need a stand, table or desk to avoid cramping your hands while reading.

The print, while quite legible, is small; some sections seem 6pt or smaller, especially the footnotes. As is common with many reprints of early editions, a few letters per page are faint, and a few have slight blotches such as a filled "e" center or a slightly thicker "t" crossbar, etc.As mentioned before, the print is still quite legible; if you are looking for the collected works please do not let the print deter you!

The sturdy binding and covers on the volumes handles the unexpectedly heavy contents well.I suppose the dimensions are roughly 9x7x1.125".

The copyright information says "Reprinted from the edition of 1854 published by W.G Blackie and Son, Glasgow".Reprints from the middle of the 19th century somehow seem appropriate for the writings of Bunyan; it gives one a feeling of history. And I *DO* love old books!

The editor describes the difficulty of obtaining 1st edition prints of Bunyan, especially since most editions were cheaply and badly printed "for the poor".Another interesting editorial comment is that Bunyan was somewhat of a misogynist.

As expected from a 1854 reprint, there are many woodcuts throughout the volumes, and they are excellent.

The 19th century compiler and editor, George Offor, supplies many footnotes. The footnotes, especially in the "Pilgrim's Progress", are often of a devotional nature such as "Take heed reader!", etc.But there are also many other footnotes clarifying rare words, doctrinal points, cross references, circumstances of writing, etc. Many of the footnotes have initials next to them, presumably indicating selected editorial comments of other commentators.(I was unable to find a clear list relating the initials to full names.)

Volumes I & II are entitled "Experimental, Doctrinal and Practical".Volume III is titled "Allegorical, Figurative and Symbolical".

To help you decide for yourself whether to purchase these books, here are the contents:

Volume I: "Experimental, Doctrinal And Practical" (771 pages)

Product Description
The Pilgrim's Progress has inspired readers for over three centuries. It is one of the best-loved and most widely read books in English literature and is a classic of the heroic Puritan tradition and a founding text in the development of the English novel. The story of Christian, whose pilgrimage takes him through the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair, and the Delectable Mountains, is full of danger and adventure. Together with his trusty companions, Faithful and Hopeful, he encounters many enemies--the foul fiend Apollyon, Judge Hategood, Giant Despair of Doubting Castle--before finally arriving at the Celestial City. Bunyan's own experience of religious persecution informs his story, and its qualities of psychological realism, and the beauty and simplicity of his prose combine to create a book whose appeal is universal. This edition includes the illustrations that appeared with the book in Bunyan's lifetime, giving a sense of its impact on contemporary readers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The great allegory.
This is my second time reading this book and my view of this book has changed slightly. The first time I read it, I preferred the first part of this book to the second part. Now, years later, I prefer the second part over the first. Either way you look at it, this is a classic work; the poor man's "Paradise Lost." The allegory, in its best moments, is pure genius and the names of all the characters are truly inspired. For the modern Christian over 400 years later, this is still a good book to read for spiritual inspiration. I will say, though, that this book can at times be too explicit in its Christian teachings and just continues to beat you over the head with it (sort of like what Moses did to Faithful in the first part, a rather hysterical image when you think about it), especially at the end of part one when Christian and Hopeful just talk forever about theology. Otherwise, the images and allegory are pure and any Christian would do well to pick this book up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
I just got done reading Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. Even though it was written in the 1600's, it still has great spiritual insight to our spiritual journey in Christ; the struggles, the fears, success, victories. It explains what it truly means to be a Christian, which beyond the current post-modern understanding of Christianity but back to pre-modern understanding of Christianity. Taking us back to our roots in Christianity that we have forgotten. It reminds us that being a Christian is far deeper than going to church and doing nice things, but it's about following God's Will to end of the Earth. I think every Christian should read this book.

They sent the wrong book, which was to be a gift for Christmas, but refused to send a replacement...I had to go to Books a Million. So much for ordering online...

4-0 out of 5 stars The classic spiritual allegory
Bunyan's rich description of Christian's journey to the Celestial City is replete with powerful spiritual lessons at every turn. The book paints a thorough picture of Bunyan's view of Christ and what it means to follow Him completely. Whether it is the characters Christian meets along the way, the dangers that befall him or the reflections of the dreamer, Bunyan uses every facet of this book to challenge his readers to deeper, more authentic discipleship. While admittedly somewhat clumsy to read stylistically, this book deserves a prestigious place among the spiritual classics. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The very complete introduction by W. R. Owens did the job for me
"No other work in English, except the Bible, has been so widely read over such a long period."When I read somethinglike that about this other work, "Pilgrim's Progress", I was curious. I got a copy and paged through it. At first I was disappointed, because I suspected that even if I forced myself to plow through the whole book slowly I probably would not understand the reasons for its popularity. But then I read the excellent 57 page introduction. And that gave me the education about "Pilgrim's Progress" that I was looking for. W.R. Owens's analysis and explanationof John Bunyan's classic satisfied my curiosity completely. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand why the greatest power in the universe loves you.
John Bunyan's book, 'The Fear of God' is an excellent study of the holiness of God and why man, even saved men, should fear him. The author, grounded in biblical truths, illustrates to the reader just how holy, powerful and awesome God is. He also shows us just how insignificant we arein comparison to God.Then, after the author has striped us of all ourfalse pride he shows us how God sees us. From here he once again lays outthe plan of salvation and why God has chosen this manner of redemption forhumanity.

After reading this book you will grow to fear God not as ainconceivable power that will consume you, but as a loving father. Anyloving child fear's their father. They fear the look of regret anddisappointment they see in their father's eye when they disappoint. This isthe fear that John Bunyan's book brings to light in such a marvelous andinspiring way.

An excellent book for anyone wrestling with the conceptsof an all powerful yet forgiving God. A must read for every growingChristian in today's world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable biography I have ever read
This easy to read book is a fine, worthy biography of John Bunyan.

I simply loved it.The book not only tells the story of John Bunyan well but also it does an excellent job of sketching his time- the critical period of English civil war. This English Civil War, in my opinion, is the forerunner of American Revolution some hundred years later. Yet few people are knowledgeable about key figures like Oliver Cromwell. This easy to read book will get you started and whet your appetite to read up more on this part of Anglo-American history.

My highest recommendation! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher's review
I don't think I ever imagined I would read A Pilgim's Progress to a class and have them absolutely gripped. The children are constantly asking if we can read some more. The larger edition with colour pictures is my favoured version for reading in class, but this book is so packed with vivid language and moral challenges that the children almost forget about illustrations. In fact, when I showed the illustration of Apollyon, they were disappointed, in that they felt the illustrator hadn't quite got the horns in the right place! This shows the degree of engagement they had with the text.Certainly the children have developed a much better understanding of metaphor, and they constantly have ideas for what each character and place represents. It is also lending an opportunity to discover stories from the Bible, and to talk about them in the same vivid way as this book retells A Pilgrim's Progress. At recent Student Led Conferences, many of the children wanted to talk about this book with their parents! My first introduction to A Pilgrim's Progress was Beth, in 'Little Women'.I have always wondered, and wanted to know more about it.This book has been a joy to read and share, and has helped me approach the orginal with much more enthusiasm!

3-0 out of 5 stars Heavy on theology, light on biography
I bought this book looking for a good biography on the writer of "The Pilgrim's Progress" John Bunyan, who I knew had been imprisoned in 17th century England for his Christian views. Unfortunately, after reading this book, I had learned little more about Bunyan other than that he had been in the Parliamentary army on garrison duty, that he was at some point converted, he pastored the church in Bedford, when he was born and when he died. The remainder of the book was about the competing theologies of the day, in detail, and analysis of the books he wrote. So, I am left looking for more information on the man and his life.
If you are looking for a good book on the 17th century English theology of the Ranters, the Quakers, the Diggers, and the Puritans, you will like this book. ... Read more

From the filthy cell in which he was imprisoned for his religious convictions, one man pens a story that has influenced millions around the world.More than 300 hears ago, a poor English tinsmith wrote a symbolic story about a man who travels a long, winding, and often bumpy road to the "Celestial City." John labors to put bread on his family's table-all the while earnestly searching the Scriptures for the secret of salvation. One day, his prayers are answered. 5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for the sinner in John Bunyan's "Grace Abounding"
A lot of us are familiar with John Bunyan as the author of The Pilgrim's Progress, whose influence in Christendom is second to the Bible. Bunyan was a preacher, a prolific writer and a shining saint for God. However when we read this book we find out that he was an atheist and infidel in his youth, enjoying sin and rebellious towards God. Inwardly he suffered from tormented nightmares of demons and judgment, but outwardly he went on pretty much as any other sinner, taking delight in sin and being the ringleader of mischief. Several times he nearly lost his life, and even though there were several close calls, still he did not turn to God. After his marriage, he participated in religious activities, went through the motions of attending church and generally lived as he pleased, each time successfully shrugging off pangs of guilt. One day, after church, while playing a sport, a voice seemed to call out to him from heaven to his soul, which said, "Wilt thou leave thy sins and go to heaven, or have thy sins and go to hell?" Bunyan was convinced it was the Lord Jesus looking down on him in displeasure. What follows details his sinking into despair, his desperate attempts at working his way into God's good graces, and his struggles with temptation and doubt. In a strange sort of way, it is comforting to read about Bunyan's struggles and identify with them because you can see how he turned out so greatly used by God. He rationalized, made excuses and tried every way to justify himself. In "Grace Abounding", Bunyan gave an honest account of his struggles, describing in great detail his doubts and despair, his yearning to be converted, and the reassurance he received through Bible study and prayer. Read "Grace Abounding"--it will help you realize how God's grace can abound and save even the most wretched of sinners and gives us abounding hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can relate to John Bunyan!
John Bunyan's journey toward saving faith parallels my own more closely than any other fellow sinner's. I had hardly begun reading "Grace Abounding" when I felt the need to grab a pen and start taking notes. Though John Bunyan is long gone, I have been comforted by the knowledge that there had been another human being who had known the same fearsome battles waged on our behalf by the God who never relinquishes what belongs to Him. Even when I have felt estranged from other believers, God was still working on my behalf. For anyone who is still holding on to the belief that a person chooses God, rather than the other way around, John Bunyan's story is for you. "Grace Abounding" puts all arguments to rest, leaving only humility and worship in its wake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sinners in Need of Great Grace
John Bunyan's "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners," is a priceless literary classic that communicates the author's anguish over his sin, the confession thereof, and the life-changing impact of God's saving grace. This masterwork was written while Bunyan (1628-1688) was imprisoned for holding unlicensed church services and was published in 1666.

Bunyan's eyes were opened to the wonder God's grace and Christ's imputed righteousness when he mused: "But one day, as I was passing in the field, and that too with some dashes on my conscience, fearing lest yet all was not right, suddenly this sentence fell upon my soul, Thy righteousness is in heaven; and methought withal, I saw, with the eyes of my soul, Jesus Christ at God's right hand; there, I say, as my righteousness;.. I also saw, moreover, that it was not my good frame of heart that made my righteousness better, nor yet my bad frame that made my righteousness worse; for my righteousness was
Jesus Christ himself, the same yesterday, and today, and for ever."

This treatise is a confessional account of John Bunyan's religious flight from unbelief and sacrilege to a lover of Jesus Christ.

He agonizingly records how the law revealed his sinfulness and his need of a Savior: "In my preaching of the Word, I took special notice of this one thing, namely that the Lord did lead me to begin where his Word begins with sinners; that is, to condemn all flesh, and to open and allege that the curse of God, by the law, doth belong to, and lay hold on all men as they come into the world, because of sin."

Bunyan is mostly known for his enormous bestselling classic "Pilgrim's Progress." This is a wonderful addition and makes for a stirring and edifying devotional.
