Product Description
This is the story of a life that has spanned much of the twentieth century. It is the story of a long and happy marriage, of advances in women's rights, of forging a career as a writer (including the excitement of a big Hollywood sale), of the sometimes bewildering pace of progress, and of raising a family in a rapidly changing world. With her wit, insightful storytelling, and keen ear for offbeat anecdotes, Nardi Reeder Campion speaks for a generation that has traveled from the roaring twenties into the twenty-first century.

"We were before pantyhose, penicillin, and the pill . . . "

Campion's address to a reunion of her Wellesley College class of 1938 has earned her a niche in cyberspace. Endlessly circulated via e-mail and even featured in the Ann Landers columns, it combines Campion's charm, wisdom, and self-deprecating humor. She has now written a memoir distinguished by those same qualities.

"In our day, we got married first and then lived together. How quaint can you be?"

Campion's memoir is, in part, the story of a long and loving marriage, one that lasted fifty-nine years and "survived four jobs, seven books, nine homes, and nineteen pets (not counting gerbils)."Whether she is describing the joys of marriage to a fun-loving husband or the pain of her son's emotional breakdown, the (sometimes mixed) blessings of grandchildren or the difficult decision to move into a retirement home, Campion's deft mix of humor and candor yields an appealing and engaging narrative. Always seeking to discover what is worthwhile, she writes movingly about love and about death. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great read
Some very funny stories offset by tears at the end.I know some of the characters so it made for an even better read.Highly recommned this for anyone with parents of the same generation. I gave the book to several people and they all passed it on as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Charming Biography Across 9 Decades in America
Unbiased as I am, I want all to know that Everyday Matters is a charming, humorous, highly readable biography. It tells tales of growing up in America in the 1920s, college in the 1930s, work in the 1940s, family in the 1950s and 1960s, and further adventures in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. You'll laugh, and you'll be touched. And Nardi Reeder Campion tells the truth, mainly -- with a few strechers.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Were Before Pantyhose, Penicillin and The Pill
I have known of Nardi Campion for many years. I have read her articles in our local paper for those same years. I was a head nurse on the patient care unit where one of her relatives was a patient. She is a graduate of Wellesley College, my daughter graduated from Wellesley in 1999. We have much in common, although we have never met. The most important of which is that we appreciate our lives and love our families. Nardi Campion is a writer, a wonderfully magnanimous writer. She tells it like it is and admits she may not remember it 100%, but almost :-)

This new book, "Everyday Matters, a Love Story" fills in the gaps of much that we didn't know about Nardi Campion and her life and loves. She is an amazing woman, married to the same man for 59 years, mother of 5 children, an author, a scholar and beloved wife. She tells of her life as a child, her mother and father. Her father was an Army man who made the Army his life, and the family moved many times in many years. But they were happy and well educated and well loved. There was sibling rivalry even though Nardi's mother denied this fact. Nardi and her older sister Julia loved each other, but there always was that competition. Finally acknowledged at the time of Julia's death.

Nardi went to Wellesley College where she blossomed and where she met her beloved Tom, who went to Harvard. They both felt the attraction and married a few years later. Over time, five children were born; they moved nine times and had many hilarious stories to tell. Nardi became a writer and eventually wrote nine books. They finally settled down in Hanover, NH home of Dartmouth College, where Tom had a job as fundraiser. They loved their life, their children and grandchildren, friends and all.

Eventually Nardi and Tom decided to give up their home and move to a retirement home. Soon after Tom grew ill and faded away. His Memorial service was one to be admired. Scottish bagpipers, poems and remembrances by all. Nardi has gone on to many journeys, some fun, some not so fun but learning experiences. She continues to write her article for the local paper and now she has this wonderful book. Her life as it unfolded, and what a life.Highly recommended. prisrob

3-0 out of 5 stars The Wisdom of Everyday Matters
Nardi Campion has written a gem, a witty and wise reflection on a life lived to the fullest.Like any great memoir, it introduces us to a new world, filled with parents and children, triumphs and tragedies, exaltation and despair, with humor, curiosity, and an enduring love constant throughout.
This is a book for readers of all ages, any man or woman who treasures thoughtful and clear writing. If you're tired of shallow celebrity driven drivel, this is the book for you.I'm buying multiple copies to give to my family at Christmas.
Particularly noteworthy is the book's exceptional coda: an original poem by Stanford poet Peter Martin Campion. ... Read more

Product Description
The masque had a brief but splendid life as the dominant mode of entertainment at the early Stuart court.Extravagant multi-media happenings, court masques were filled with arcane allegorical references and frequently commented on political issues of the day. This selection, the most substantial available, brings together eighteen masques, tracing the evolution of the genre from Jonson's early masques for King James I to Davenant's 1640 masque for Charles I, performed just before the outbreak of the English Civil War.Together, these works offer fascinating insights into the culture and politics of the early 17th century. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Fusion of Dance, Drama, Music, and Stagecraft
More than fifty court masques were held in the period 1605-1640. Eighteen representative masques have been compiled in this Oxford University Press (World's Classics series) book, titled Court Masques. This text offers a good introduction to this largely unfamiliar form of entertainment.

The court masque was an extravagant, ostentatious, theatrical spectacle that dominated entertainment in the Stuart courts of King James I and Charles I.Inordinately costly, these aristocratic entertainments were often a source of friction between the king and parliament. Following the revolution of Oliver Cromwell, court masques came to an end.

The editor, David Lindley, provides valuable supplementary material: a general introduction to the court masque, a chronology of Stuart masques, and a select bibliography on general studies, stagecraft, music and dance, as well as sources for Jonson, Campion, Chapman, Daniel, and Davenant.

I especially appreciated the extensive explanatory notes as many of the masques presumed audience familiarity with relatively obscure elements of Greek and Roman mythology. The notes also clarified oblique references to sensitive political issues of the Stuart period, even the high cost of the masques themselves.

Ben Jonson was clearly the dominant creator of court masques and he was its most pugnacious defender. Throughout this long period Jonson forcefully argued that the key value of court masque was its intellectual message. Contrastingly, the remarkable Indigo Jones that designed and built the complex stage scenery and its associated machinery wrote, "... and indeed, these shows are nothing else but pictures with light and motion."

Despite the excellent supplementary material and explanatory notes, Court Masques may initially seem difficult, in part due to the unfamiliarity of the masque. In some ways reading a masque is like reading an opera, except that we can easily visualize an operatic performance. David Lindley is to be commended for creating this interesting collection that makes the Jacobean and Caroline court masques accessible to non-specialists. ... Read more

Product Description
England's Musical PoetTHOMAS CAMPION By Miles Merwin. Kastendieck New York . Printed in the United States of America To My Father PREFACE THIS book serves to reveal., through a close scrutiny of the works of Thomas Campion., the interrelationship of poetry and music which created one of the great phenomena of English literature the Elizabethan lyric. It presents an entirely new approach to Campion by recognising in him the musician as poet and the poet-musician whereas in the past he has been considered only as a poet. He emerges the index and exponent of his age in its expression of poetry and music England's Musical Poet. In the course of treatment., I have shown how music had a material effect in conditioning the Elizabethan lyric,, how poets wrote lyrics to be sung., and composers sought singable lyrics. Together they created an art form called the ay re wherein poetry and music were equally balanced. In all prob ability many of the anonymous lyrics of the age originated in this manner., while Campion's ayres attest the ability of one man to write both words and music. Since the secret of their effectiveness lies in associating words and notes together, the spontaneity of the Elizabethan lyric may be explained through the influence of music. The book evolved from two circumstances first., the comparatively recent monumental edition of the Elizabethan songbooks by Dr. Edward H. Fellowes and secondly, the juxtaposition of the study of English literature and the study of music in my pursuit of education culminating in graduate work at Yale. Without Percival Vivian's authoritative edition of Campion's Works and Dr. Fellowes scholarly achievement, this book 8 PREFACE could not have been written. Even with these., it was necessary to consult the originals , and I am grateful to the authorities of the Harvard Library for photostats of the 1601 Booke of Ayres, and of the British Museum for photostats of the other song books. I welcome this opportunity to thank a triumvirate of Yale professors for their help John M. Berdan, for his thorough belief in my ideas Alexander M. Witherspoon, for his critical appraisal of the manuscript and Bruce Simonds, for his defence of the musical interpretation. To these should be added William Lyon Phelps for his infectious enthusiasm upon reading the finished book and Dorothea Walker Edge, for her meticulous proof-reading of the manuscript. M. M. K. Product Description
Thomas Campion (1567-1620) was born in London and educated at Cambridge. He studied law at Gray's Inn, and was both a poet and composer - a contemporary not only of Shakespeare, Drayton, Marlowe and Jonson, but also of Byrd, Morley, Gibbons and Dowland. In 1591, five of his songs appeared in the unauthorised version of Sidney's "Astrophel and Stella". In 1595, he published a collection of Latin epigrams, "Poemata", but he is best known for his lyric poems and settings. Campion wrote over one hundred lute songs, published between 1601 and 1617 in four "Books of Ayres", as well as a treatise on "The Art of English Poesie", and a number of masques. His work was not rediscovered until the nineteenth century; since then, whoever dreams of a poem where language begins to resemble music thinks of Campion. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Rather odd choice for an editor
Charles Simic is a good poet, one especially known for small prose poems such as those in his 'signature' collection, "The World Doesn't End". He has a fine ear, of course. Prose poems or not, his work shows a thorough understanding of prosody. But Campion perhaps calls for something more.

Thomas Campion was both a musician and a poet. If a minor poet, he was still the best at something: short, lyrical poems doing double-duty as 'lyrics'. As Simic fully acknowledges, these texts fall out of context when read alone on the page. (Fortunately, Amazon offers some good, affordable recordings of his work.). That said, Campion employs traditional prosody as well as something called quantitative measure. This is a long story, but essentially many earlier English poets (and some up to the present day) contended that the English language could make poetry out of alternating 'short' and 'long' syllables, mainly anchored in vowel duration. Campion himself wrote the last serious theoretical defense of this theory, "Observations in the Art of English Poesie". Quantitative meters form classical poetry (i.e. Greek and Roman). And it's mighty hard not to hear a difference between 'road' (short) and 'rude' (long), for instance: poets since Sir Philip Sydney heard it and tried to account for it in different effects. But as other poets were quick to realize (i.e. Samuel Daniel's response, "A Defence of Rime", written the same year as Campion's tract), English is a Germanic language and its poetry primarily functions through accentual stress (e.g. "Mary had a little lamb", stress-nonstress-stress ....). Quantitative considerations only follow after straight stresses, namely when writing for music.

This is something quite different from regular poetry; no offense to Mr. Simic, but few poets and librettists since Pound, Auden, or Zukofsky really have the technical wherewithal to understand all of Campion's resources. Is this a good selection, though? Yes. Campion didn't write all so much, and it's mostly all of a piece. But does Simic really stand up to the job as the "Poet-to-Poet" editor here? Not so much. His introduction is perfunctory, and he really does miss a few great lyrics. Auden and Hollander's selection (1973) is better if you can find it (which also includes facsimile musical notations); the Walter Davis edition (1970) includes everything plus Campion's theoretical prose. For the price, though, you could certainly do worse than starting here. (Also, this edition can be purchased more easily in Britain or Amazon.co.uk.)

Product Description
PREFACE SOME time ago, when working upon a small edition of Campions English poems for Messrs. Routledges Muses Library I had , the good fortune to come across certain information concerning the poets descent and early circumstances which had not, so far as I am aware, been previously noticed. The original clues, when fully pursued, provided a mass of material too great for inclusion in that volume, and I was obliged to content myself with a promise of dealing with the subject more completely in a subsequent work. The present edition was undertaken by way of redemption of that promise, partly with the object of placing the facts on record, and partly to provide for general access a complete collection of Campions works, the fullest edition hitherto produced Mr. Bullens 1889 volume having been privately printed and limited by subscription. The text has everywhere been given in the old spelling reduced to consistency in the Latin works and I have striven to repro- duce the character of the originals in typography, indentation, and punctuation, though discretion has been used in the lastnamed. MS. records have been quoted in their native garb of spelling and abbreviation and here let me anticipate a criticism which I have heard in respect of other books by stating that I am fully aware that the current MS. abbreviation for th is not y , though I have employed that letter as nearest to the character in question. Except in a very few passages I have adhered to and occasionally restored the reading of the original texts. I think I ought at this point to explain the course of reasoning which led me to my conclusions as to Thomas Campions identity, so as to lay my grounds open to examination. Egerton MS. Mr. Flower of the British 2599 was first pointed out to me by Museum, but, beyond the fact that it referred to a Thomas Campion at Cambridge, I could at first find no sure footing for identification. Finally, however, a laborious search through ac- counts and title-deeds, Latin and English, disclosed the allusion to Thomas Campion de . Grayes ynne This was the keystone to the whole structure of material. It had been shown by Mr. Bullen that the poet was a member of Grays Inn, and the records of the Inn make it clear that it only boasted one Campionat this date. This proved, the MS. afforded clues which ramified in every direction, frequently providing corroborative evidence of the truth ofmy original identification. My obligations are almost too numerous to be acknowledged in detail, though shift must be made to mention the greater. To Professor Raleigh, and that veteran of literature, Dr. Furnivall, I am indebted for encouragement and advice and I have to thank Mr. Bullen, the pioneer of the study to which I am a mere apprentice, for his assistance, and for kind permission to quote Several notes from his own editions. I owe much to Dr. Walker, Librarian of Peterhouse, who at my instance and armed with clues of my providing, made successful research among the College records for proof of Campions membership and who hasshown untiring courtesy in affording me subsequent assistance. Among other literary creditors mention must be made of my friend Robin Flower of the British Museum, who, as already explained, was in a sense the only begetter of the present work of Dr... ...
