A last gleam of magic ...
When the Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series was cancelled, Lin Carter's work was never quite the same; the books of his latter years, while still entertaining, don't follow up on the unfulfilled promise of his earlier work. He never did write the epic fantasy novel in his own voice that he had it in him to write.

But he did provide us with two final anthologies, this one & its companion, "Kingdoms of Sorcery," in the style of his classic & seminal anthology "The Young Magicians." As before, there's a superb selection of material, both well known & undeservedly obscure. Best of all are his introductions to the stories -- that was always half the fun of Carter's anthologies, after all! His love for the fantasy genre shines through on every page, and a reader could do far worse than to spend many magical hours in his company. Coulda woulda shoulda worn blue
You have to love the Prince Zarkon books.They are great pulp tributes and the character has immense potential.

This blue tale, however, doesn't quite showcase that potential.It falls short, but at least it does so in a funtastic way.It had a nifty idea that just needed more development.Reads like one of the off Doc Savages, written by a ghost writer.

But still worth a read.Zarkon and crew are too fun to ever miss a single outing. ... Read more

Good pirates vs bad pirates, with a heroic barbarian king, an evil wizard, a young princeling, plus weather creating machinery, for the hell of it. Completely as expected, with the odd extra sea monster. The princeling of course gets the girl, as the heroic barbarian king already has one and is married.
