Amazon.com Review
Long ago the Tripods, gigantic three-legged machines, descended upon Earth and took control. They used "Caps," administered ceremoniously near eachchild's 14th birthday, to control humans' brains and keep themdocile. Now there is pleasant life in villages, little technology, and no war--but there is no freedom either. In this powerful andsuspenseful series, 13-year-old Will Parker and his friends deal withhunger, humanity, envy, and pride as they struggle to find out all they canabout the Tripods and overthrow their rule. Written by John Christopher, author of many juvenile science fiction and fantasy books, The TripodsTrilogy is sure to make a science fiction fan out of any reader--youngor old. This box set of paperbacks includes The White Mountains,The City of Gold and Lead, and The Pool of Fire, the chillingconclusion to the series that poses the question: Who would rule the worldif it were freed from the aliens? 4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars . . . A Groundbreaking Series
I first read the Tripods Trilogy as a preteen in the late 70s, then again in the 80s as a teenager, and again only recently as a middle-aged man. John Christopher created a classic that still holds up in many ways, despite the passage of time and advance of technology. If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, then J.K. Rowling's use of ideas from Sphere Ball and the Golden Sphere, as well as Suzanne Collins' use of the Games and resistance, prove that these books influenced readers and writers for years beyond their initial run.

"The White Mountains" was first in the series, and introduced us to a world in which man is enslaved to the mysterious rule of the Tripods and those who control them. Will Parker, Henry, and Beanpole headed for the hills, literally, looking high in the Swiss Alps for freedom from mind-control. We got our first glimpses of the larger enemy--and of the resistance to come.

"The City of Gold and Lead" takes the series to another level, putting Will and young Fritz through their paces when they attend some European Games, as part of the resistance's plan. They win their events and gain access to the Tripods' city, where the alien masters live in heavy, green-tinted atmosphere. For the first time, Will sees a way to fight this imposing enemy, but not all goes as planned.

"The Pool of Fire" gives us a fast-paced conclusion, with Will, Henry, and Beanpole reunited as the resistance forms a plan to take down all three cities of the Tripod rule, including the primary one on the Panama Isthmus. They face obstacles, some give their lives, but the resistance refuses to give up until they have exhausted every way of sabotaging the alien invasion that's on its way.

Only recently did I read the prequel, "When the Tripods Came," released by Christopher after much interest in the late 80s and early 90s. It fails to create the same suspense of the original trilogy, but provides a nice bit of extra info for those who love the books as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soooo good
I read this trilogy when I was in junior high, back in the 60s, and fell in love with them.Never saw the BBC series or heard much about them, until very recently.I hope they do produce a film based on these books.

Besides the excitement of a small group of people trying to fight the Master overlords, I think I especially appreciated that the books were set in the past and the future.Mankind had regressed after subjugation to the point where the characters seemed to be living in the middle ages. The glimpses into mankind' past triumphs, such as the scenes with Paris in ruins, were fascinating.

Loved loved loved these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have never forgotten this series
I first read these books nearly 40 years ago in Russell Elementary School and have never forgotten them. They were that good. Now I'm purchasing the trilogy for my grandchildren to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humanism in the alien and futuristic
Just re-read the entire series, and they are as good as I remembered as a teen, back when the second edition first came out. Christopher pens realities you won't find in more simplistic (and non-SF) works, and the ending is noble and uplifting. I recommend this to everyone, young nad old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brought me back!
I read The Tripods Trilogy as a child & LOVED them.It had been 15 years since I had even thought about these books until one day, eating cherries from the farmer's market I picked up a cherry that was attached to 2 others (ie; a tripod).Immediately I remembered these books, went straight to Amazon, ordered them & read them within 2 days!

Very quick and easy reads!I loved them and will from now on save them for my future kids to read!! ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "John Christopher," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have John Christopher in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with John Christopher when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name John Christopher, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Tiedeman and John F. To support his analysis of the writings of these authors, Jacobs examines relevant federal and state cases. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This trilogy is excellent.
Other than the White Mountains trilogy, this is Christopher's best work.It is set in a future where all technology, science, and machines are outlawed, and the past has been wiped out by wars and natural disasters. The main character becomes the prince of a small city-state.The books are filled with exciting fight scenes, unusual concepts, and the struggle of a boy who is burdened with the duty to rule.I would highly recommend this book to any fan of science fiction, and in particular any fan of the White Mountains trilogy or John Christopher. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a suspensful, easy read
Dusk of Demons is a definite winner for anyone who seeks adventure, suspense, or action. One thing that made this book so enjoyable to read wasthe character development. The main character of the book was a teenagedboy named Robert. Robert had sandy hair and light eyes. He was by no meanslarge, however, he was strong. Robert didn1t strike me as particularlybright, but he held his own. His best friend and non-biological sister,Paddy, was quite different. Paddy had darker hair and darker eyes. She wasathletic andkeen in thought. A stubborn nature was her main flaw, but shehad a tendency to win her way. Paddy was the most fearless character in thebook and, because of this quality, she had no problem taking risks. Yetanother important character was Mother Ryan. Mother Ryan had no biologicalties to Robert, but she did care for him as a mother. Mother Ryan was inmany ways similar to her daughter Paddy. She was stout and strict, but atthe same time extremely caring and loving. Together, these three, whetherthey liked it or not, embarked on a journey facing nasty country people, misunderstood gypsies, and a countless terrifying demons. Frommy first impressions, I thought this book took place on an archipelago offthe European coast back in the seventeen or eighteen hundreds. This seemedso because of the fact that there were no automobiles, no stoves orappliances, and electricity was unknown as well. However, I soon learnedthat it actually took place in the distant future. The past had been erasedfrom all people1s memories and was labeled, 3The time of madness.2 Theylived in a society where no building could tower more than six times theheight of a man, and no tools from the past could be used. It was as iftime started over and stagnated. The beings to blame for this time lapsewere demons who were controlled by a god called the Dark One, and who, inturn, controlled the inhabitants of Earth.

Because of a fire thatthe demons inflicted, Robert, Paddy, and Mother Ryan were forced to seekrefuge on the mainland. There they learned the true meaning of demons andthe Dark One and were haunted to the point of near demise. Not only did thetroubles caused by the demons plague them, the people were out to deportthem once again, and deporting was not an option for these three. The bleakand scary towns that they were forced to flee to were inhabited by peoplewho were manipulated as if they were puppets by the Dark One. Paddy1sstubbornness put her at the mercy of the demons, and it was up to Robert tosave her.

This book moved slowly at first, but once the plot beganto thicken, it was filled with one thrill or suspenseful moment afteranother. It was not incredibly beautiful writing, but it was easy going. The plot was extremely creative and mixed science fiction with fantasy. Iwould suggest this book to anyone looking for an easy reader page turner.

4-0 out of 5 stars A DARK BLEND OF GOTHIC HORROR AND SATANISM
Once again Christopher transports us into the future where civilization has disintegrated- probably our own fault....The hero is a 14-year-old boy named Ben who witnesses the terrifying destruction of his home. Worse still, he gradually learns more about his origins origins, but is determined to reunite his foster family. Yet another hero who embarks on a personal odyssey for truth, knowledge and spiritual coming-of-age.

This book promises an exciting trilogy if the author continues his three-in-one trend. Not just action, but self-discovery; just how much power should the son of THE MASTER wield? What caused the Madness which destroyed the old civilization? Why is there such suspicion and prejudice against the Sea People, Gypsies and Landsmen? Who is this evil, mysterious Dark One universally feared? Why do his agents, the Summoners, hold such puitannical, religious powers? Can a mere teenage boy discover/challenge the beliefs of his elders in his quest for Truth?

5-0 out of 5 stars cool
This book is my favorite book in the entire world. I think there should be a sequel (or something like it)

4-0 out of 5 stars After all this time - a new book from John Christopher
I am a huge fan of John Christopher. I read his 'Tripods' and 'Prince in Waiting' trilogies when I was a teenager. I've loved his work ever since, but hadn't seen anything from him for so long, I thought perhaps he'd died. This book is a classic in Christopher's style - young adult fiction, but readable by adults. The story of a young man in a puritan after-the-fall tale - adventure, personal growth, and Christopher's near-ludite vision of a future where technology is suppressed by religion. A scary and entertaining read. ... Read more

Edward Leithen is the closest of Buchan's protagonists to the author's own experience and imagination. A prosperous Scots lawyer and MP in London, Leithen seeks adventure to relieve the tedium of respectability. In The Power House he is forced by event and accident to see civilisation as a thin veneer over the human jungle; in John Macnab he makes his own adventure by playing the poacher; in Sick Heart River, seeking a lost friend he meets death and redemption in the wastes of Canada. John Buchan is a man worth reading, worth studying--a kind of omnicompetent hero like Theodore Roosevelt. This volume collects an interesting variety of his stories, and though I did not enjoy them as much as I did his novel series The Four Adventures of Richard Hannay: The Thirty-Nine Steps/Greenmantle/Mr. Standfast/the Three Hostages (I still haven't read the last volume), I am glad to have learned more about Buchan from these stories that take us into Canada and into a later time of his life experience. ... Product Description
Considered the definitive resource and text on forensic psychiatry and psychology since the publication of the first edition, Psychological Evaluations for the Courts, Second Edition, continues to be the most comprehensive discussion of legal, research, and clinical issues for both mental health and legal professionals. Fully revised and updated, the volume covers a broad range of topics in forensic mental health, including insanity, child abuse, sentencing, personal injury claims, and civil commitment. Less traditional subjects such as federal antidiscrimination and entitlement laws, competency to testify, workers' compensation, and a new section on the clinical evaluation of witness credibility have also been added. Throughout, the authors summarize and analyze legal issues, offer suggestions for evaluation procedures, and review appropriate research on both clinical opinions and the legal process.

New to the Second Edition

Completely updated to reflect current research and practice, the volume contains four entirely new chapters and has been revised throughout to include analyses of new case law and clinical techniques; important research on competency and dangerousness from the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Mental Health and Law; and new ethical rules developed by the American Psychological Assocation and the American Psychiatric Association. Also new to this edition are exercises and case studies for students in each chapter (see below).

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend for Forensic Evaluators
It was recommended that I have this book by the credtialing agency. It has information that both legal and mental health professionals need to understand each side in a forensic evluation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good comprehensive text
This book was mandatory for a forensic case law course taught by a seasoned forensic expert. It is thorough, accurate, and provides everything one needs to know before conducting forensic evaluations, as well as a significant amount of information most professionals ought to know but often don't.I recommend it as a tremendous resource for any clincian, especially those who have even a mild interest in forensic or correctional psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5+*s
Not a light Sunday afternoon read, this book requires time to think and digest topics. It provides outstanding survey and advanced analysis of research, U.S. laws, and policies across the major foci. While a bit dated, it probably is the best source for gaining an understanding of forensic mental health. An outstanding reference.I feel somewhat odd in reviewing this book, almost like, I'd imagine someone feels when reviewing the Bible.Well worth the price.I wish it would have an annual or biannual update.

4-0 out of 5 stars Journeyman's Opinion
Excellent reference, but a little outdated as of this writing (Dec. 2001).Opinions and recommendations of the authors do not in all respects reflect the majority, or even the respectible minority, of forensic psychologists and psychiatrists.Nonetheless, an excellent reference to have in your library to get the overall gist of an issue or a topic at the interface of psychology and the law.Detailed information pertaining to actual practices will need to be located elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Breed
I have used this book extensively both as teacher and practitioner for years and it remains the best available text for mental health professionals conducting evaluations for the legal system. It is also an outstanding reference for attorneys litigating mental health issues. Its greatest strength is in the criminal law area, but it is excellent in other areas of the law/mental health interface as well.Psychiatrists should not be deterred by the term "psychological" in the title; it is equally applicable to both disciplines. ... First flown in 1981, the shuttle is the most complicated flying machine ever devised. It has been the stalwart of NASA's continued manned space-flight program for almost 30 years with more than 100 successful missions, including the construction and provision of the International Space Station. This success has come at a high price with the loss of 11 astronauts in the Challenger and Columbia disasters, forever burned into the memories of the watching world. With NASA due to retire its ageing fleet in 2010, this book tells the fascinating story of the space shuttle from its inception to the shape of things to come.
