5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Coolidge?
This could be Coolidge's best book.I have owned a copy of it for years and have read it many times.Coolidge's ear for language is unique, and the high-point of his work (for me) are the series of books he wrote in the 1970s and 1980s. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
A landmark first-time collaboration between poet Clark Coolidge and writer/scholar/artist Keith Waldrop, Bomb is a meditation on a book of photographs that document the Manhattan Project. Coolidge's thirty-page poem begins with epigraphs by Democritus, Gregory Corso and Andre Breton/Paul Eluard, and continues in an elliptical, glancing narrative style that lucidly investigates a subject often too traumatic to consider directly-the impact of the atomic bomb on our lives. Or should we say instead, the bomb's impact on our everyday lives-as Coolidge puts it, the general tendency has been to "put the bomb in a glass vase/add dust and forget." Like all of Coolidge's work, Bomb is sharp, stark, and rhythmic; the poet here tangles with the dreamlike oddness of the photographs at hand in fits and starts of language with an explosive beauty. Keith Waldrop's series of collages are literal reworkings of the original pictures: deep blacks and bright whites excavated from the book, remade here in the image of the poem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars countercultural experimental poetry
Clark Coolidge's writing is some of the most thoroughly modern I've ever known. With subjects ranging from plasticine to a bolas, & with another interesting collage thing (visual art, not the poetry, though the poetry is kind of like that too...), this is a great book to have. ... Read more

Product Description
Poetry. Clark Coolidge's 1988 book AT EGYPT is a single poem in eleven sections that treats travel as a source for the generative self. Coolidge gestures at his dissolubility as a traveler and, as such, a productive ability for complete re-generation of self "from inside the factory that changes it forever...into a recognizable but totally different shape"--Phillip Whalen. Coolidge marks "a monument and an alphabet" with AT EGYPT within "complexion, light diffused and reflected on sand"--Paul Hoover. ... Read more

Product Description
Poetry. Following Volume One of ON THE NAMEWAYS, this newest work by this modern master is, as the name suggests, partly a meditation on the fact of names: Antonin Artaud in his shoulderpads/ leave and you can say hello/...Karl Malden in the moral void (from Arsenic and Old Blemishes). For Coolidge, the figure of the improvising jazz soloist becomes a model for the poet in the moment of writing -- darting in and out of motivic possibilities, exploring all registers of the instrument, and seeking, always, to sustain a flow of fresh ideas. In poem after poem he produces lines of abstract, bright, musical phrasing. Coolidge was a language poet before there was language poetry -- Michael Leddy, World Literature Today. ... Read more

Product Description
Poetry. A reprint of this 1982 book of prose poetry by the nearly legendary avant-garde stalwart Clark Coolidge still exudes freshness. "A long-time master of the jazzy long work, Clark Coolidge has this time turned the long poem in prose into a non-fiction novel or tomb full of buried things taken with you of the new existence of old logic and present looking, all sung by a free man wortking alone and trapped as one is in cave with finite supply of oxygen, food, breath & luck"--Bernadette Mayer on MINE. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Way Time Feels on Metal
This work is a record of a period of life spent in the presence of an object-a crystal which, writes Coolidge, "has thirteen facets" (as Coolidge's name has thirteen letters)and which comes to dominate Coolidge's reflections. Coolidge writes with humor and authority, and the verse evokes, at various times, a scientific investigation, a Kerouac-influenced stream of consciousness, and an absurdist collage. An excellent example of how contemporary poetry can remain vital by drawing inspiration from unlikely sources. ... Read more

Fiction. From THE BOOK OF DURING: "In every a room, but could I describe it, ride around its edges, never quite pushing through the perimeter wherein we spent so many fucking afternoons. Terrible picture of all the words waiting relentlessly outside. What after all is the activity of telling beyond the fate of act? A feeling as if I had only heard about the teeming presence of my own life. And is your fucking a telling? Everywhere wandered around in here while we were doing it. But we hardly noticed, we were too palmed into our past decide. Will you tell me about it while we are doing it? Will you find yourself able to tell what we were doing while we are doing a thing similar? Can you relate to me.. Will you say everything you can recall from it, the act of saying of a fucking previous in a fucking present? And then you put your..and I lifted my...And then I came, and then you came, and then will we come? Or are these only as thoughts of a room, its light and walls?" ... Read more

Product Description
This anthology presents material selected from the collection of Angel Hair magazine and books edited by Anne Waldman and Lewis Warsh between 1966 and 1978. Included are substantial sections of writing--in some cases entire books--from an impressive range of poets including Clark Coolidge, Alice Notley, Hannah Weiner, Robert Creeley, Bernadette Mayer, Kenward Elmslie, Tom Clark, Joanne Kyger, Bill Berkson, Ted Greenwald, Lorenzo Thomas, John Wieners, Joe Brainard, Ron Padgett, as well as Waldman and Warsh, among many others. From the nascent St. Mark's Poetry Project on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Bolinas and Boulder, Angel Hair published an idiosyncratic cross-section of innovative writing in distinctive format, becoming one of the longest-lived and most influential publishers on the small press scene. The anthology of literary writings is supplemented with brief memoirs by more than twenty writers, and the book also includes an annotated checklist by Aaron Fischer and Steven Clay that comprises a citation and photograph of each of the approximately eighty books, magazines, broadsides and catalogues issued by the Press. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Son of Providence
The poet Clark Coolidge returns to his place of birth with a mastery of narrative style in poetry/prose that has always intrigued this reviewer. What he leaves out by adroit word absence makes Providence a mystery even for this native. I believe another story lies beneath the surface of the poet's Providence obsession. His well chosen words leave more to the imagination than even he realizes. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the premier collection of dialogues, talks, and writings by Philip Guston (1913-1980), one of the most intellectually adventurous and poetically gifted of modern painters. Over the course of his life, Guston's wide reading in literature and philosophy deepened his commitment to his art--from his early Abstract Expressionist paintings to his later gritty, intense figurative works. This collection, with many pieces appearing in print for the first time, lets us hear Guston's voice--as the artist delivers a lecture on Renaissance painting, instructs students in a classroom setting, and discusses such artists and writers as Piero della Francesca, de Chirico, Picasso, Kafka, Beckett, and Gogol. ... "39 poems of humor and duress, written while attending to remants of my childhood on satellite waves, realizing an inherent wackiness in these accounts of men descending from horses before buttes or saloons, speaking lines like 'This town got a sawbones?' or 'I reckon not'. They had me so dreaming that I took aim and wrote. Or wrote without hardly aiming to, one." ... Read more
