1-0 out of 5 stars Crime and Punishment
This is one book that I would not recommend to anyone. The author had so many character and so much detail that I could not even get past page 55.All the characters in the book seem to have nothing to do with each otherand it got to the point that I did not even want to try to read the bookanymore.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good story, but too damn long.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kindle versions:beware!
Every Kindle version I've found is the Constance Garnett translation. Regardless of the translation you are thinking of buying, the Kindle link Amazon provides goes to the CG translation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
I wanted to get the David Magarshack translation of Crime and Punishment, so went to his page on amazon and clicked on C&P. Among the options offered is a kindle version, but the kindle version is NOT a Magarshack translation. Since the translation is critical to enjoyment of this great novel, I find amazon's options very misleading. All translations are NOT created alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great translation of a classic
I only gave it 4 stars because I have been spoiled by Pevear's translation of Anna Karenina and nothing can hold a candle to that. However, this is a great book and a great translation. I read it fairly quickly on my Kindle and in some places I couldn't put it down (in others, I had to put it down). Everyone should read this international classic. BTW: Great Kindle price.

Product Description
This Casebook is a collection of interpretations of Crime and Punishment. The selection not only reflects earlier work by major critics in the field, but also more recent studies. At the same time the choice of critical approaches has been made on the basis of covering the novel's various aspects: Dostoevsky's debt to other novelists in the European tradition; his roots as a writer in the so-called "Natural School" of the 1840s with its emphasis on the theme of the city; the thematic and symbolic structure of the novel itself; the psychology of the hero; the philosophical content of the novel and its relationship to contemporary thought; the novel's religious dimension. This latter approach has long been established in western criticism, but the two essays with which the Casebook concludes are by modern Russian scholars, who examine the novel in the light of their own Orthodox tradition. ... Product Description
The Possessed also translated as The Devils or Demons, is an 1872 novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky. For an explanation of the marked difference in the English-language title, please see the section "Note on the title" below.

An extremely political book, The Possessed is a testimonial of life in Imperial Russia in the late 19th century.

As the revolutionary democrats begin to rise in Russia, different ideologies begin to collide. Dostoevsky casts a critical eye on both the left-wing idealists, exposing their ideas and ideological foundation as demonic, and the conservative establishment's ineptitude in dealing with those ideas and their social consequences.

This form of intellectual conservativism tied to the Slavophil movement of Dostoevsky's day, is seen to have continued on into its modern manifestation in individuals like Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Dostoevsky's novels focusing on the idea that utopias and positivists ideas, in being utilitarian, were unrealistic and unobtainable.

The book has four primary ideological characters: Verkhovensky, Shatov, Stavrogin and Kirilov. Through their philosophies, Dostoevsky describes the political chaos seen in 19th-Century Russia. (Quote from wikipedia.org)
