3-0 out of 5 stars Not all Sherlock Holmes stories!
Although this collection has a wide and varied range of novels, stories and other good works of Conan Doyle, its most important work: Sherlock Holmes novels and stories, is not complete! Not only is "The Resident Patient" ( story from "Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes") missing, but the whole "The Case of Sherlock Holmes" is also missing. That is 13 stories (12 from "The Case..." plus "The Resident Patient") which you will never read if you buy this collection believing that all Sherlock Holmes works are included.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful tribute to Victorian sleuths
I love the format of this collection. Each story has a short preface that gives some biographical info and tells how the story fits into the early history of detective fiction. So you get a bit of an education along with your thrills and chills.

The editor was interested in showing the amazing variety of investigators that arose in the wake of Sherlock Holmes. We meet with lady detectives, clergymen sleuths, scientific investigators, detectives both brave and cowardly - and even an agent who employs a Hindu snake charmer to see into mysteries.

There are fourteen stories, and I liked every one very much, with two exceptions (but what editor can please everyone?). The creators of famous detectives like Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown and The Thinking Machine are in company with authors long since forgotten. And the mix is very successful.

The stories illustrate the incredibly fertile imaginations of Victorian and Edwardian mystery writers. A lecture on sea worms leads to the apprehension of a murderer. A fly fisherman solves a crime among butterfly collectors. A house ghost who has behaved well for centuries suddenly turns violent.

Fans of vintage detection can pick up some fascinating facts, such as who invented the inverted detective story and who first filled the void when Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Holmes. And those who take pleasure in historic atmosphere will find plenty of it here.

Detection by Gaslight is a fun introduction to Victorian mystery writing - but also a welcome supplement for those who have read widely in the period.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice collection
A collection put together by mystery authority Douglas Greene, this 258-page volume gathers stories from writers as well known as Kipling ("The Return of Imray") and G.K. Chesterton ("The Eye of Apollo"). Also included is A. Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches".

Other writers and stories:

Robert W. Chambers -- The Purple Emperor
R. Austin Freeman -- The Dead Hand
Jacques Futrelle -- The Tragedy of the Life Raft
E. and H. Heron -- The Story of Baelbrow
Headon Hill -- The Divinization of the Zagury Capsules
Silas K. Hocking --A Perverted Genius
L.T. Meade & Robert Eustace -- Mr. Bovey's Unexpected Will
Arthur Morrison -- The Case of the Lost Foreigner
Baroness Orczy -- The York Mystery
Catherine L. Pirkis -- The Ghost of Fountain Lane
George R. Sims -- The Haverstock Hill Murder

The book also contains a two-page introduction by mystery authority Douglas G. Greene, as well as interesting under-one-page biographical notes about each author.

Recommended as a nice mind-trip to Victorian times for mystery readers, for a more-than-reasonable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eclectic Collection
Editor Douglas Greene has gathered an eclectic set of Victorian mysteries that is sure to please fans of Victorian literature. Many of these authors are long out of print, and there were several with whom I was completely unfamiliar.

There were of course, stories by Doyle, Orczy and Chesterton to represent the more traditional favorites--Chesterton's "The Eye of Apollo" is especially excellent. Several of the other stories were surprisingly deep and well-written, though there were also a few truly dreadfully written stories, that were quite popular in their day, and reading them was fun in a different way. (I'll not give my opinion as to which stories were which, so as not to influence other readers.)

Overall, this is an excellent set of Victorian stories, giving a wide range of styles and tastes, with a short biography of the author at the start of the story. For anyone who enjoys Victorian lit, these stories (especially the lesser known gems among them) will make a wonderful read.

2-0 out of 5 stars There's always only one Holmes.
This is an anthology of detective stories in Victorian era, when Holmes and Watson were actively investigating. However, Holmes fans will still be rather disappointed because most are featuring rather commonplacedetectives showing off in front of the dumb. Nevertheless, there is stillsome intelligence in the detectives, which is rarely found in their modernworld collegues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative collection
Having spent years combing the used bookstores from Maine to Florida for Victorian era detective fiction, I can vouch for the superlative quality of this collection. You would probably have to time-travel in order to find so many intriguing stories all in one place-including a rare gem by R. Austin Freeman whichapparently has never been published before in the United States. The editor is Edgar award-winning author Douglas G. Greene, considered by many the foremost authority on classic detective fiction today. The introductory essay alone is worth the price of the book. Thanks again, Dover-and thanks again, Douglas Greene. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mystery better than Terror
This book includes nine tales of terror and six tales of mystery. It was written in 1923, four years before the last of the Sherlock Holmes books.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is obviously at his best at mystery rather than terror.Fortunately, the mystery stories tend to be the longer of the two.

The tales of mystery really do remind one of Sherlock Holmes. In one, one character states that if you have exhausted all the possibilities except one, that last remaining must be the truth no matter how farfetched it appears. In all the tales, he sets up mysteries that are solved in the Holmes style.Though not Holmes, some of the characters are quite interesting, and it is fun to try to figure out the answers to the mysteries.

Good short stories.I recommend this book, at least the mysteries section. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Free SF Reader
A scientific genius of the Doyle era comes up with a method for deep sea exploration, and gives it a try.Unfortunately, a cyclone wrecks the ship they are attached to.

Fortunately for them, not all the Atlanteans were destroyed, and they are rescued by some of the denizens of aforementioned remnant.

A fairly genial reception awaits the adventurers (who also find some hot chicks, it seems, at least the younger two do).

Initital verbal communication is established through classical Greek, as apparently said Atlanteans kept Greek slaves, from their war with ancient Greece.

Just to throw you for a loop, in the midst of all this scientific discovery, we have some reincarnated heroes.

A more than slight problem is discovered, as the advent of these gentlemen has led to the reawakening of the ancient nemesis of the Atlanteans, Baal. (Seems they can never get rid of the guy in Stargate, either).

Baal apparently is not the only powerful being with tricks left, as his ancient white magic enemy manages to possess Professor Maracot for a time, leading to his defeat.

Of course, they devise a means for getting a hopeful message to the surface world, to organise a possible rescue, and slip away from their hosts, complete with female companionship.

All in all, entertaining enough, and I didn't see the Baal coming, that is for sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars DOYLE SHINES IN HIS LAST NOVEL
Readers who know of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle through his Sherlock Holmes stories, his tales of Sir Nigel in the 14th century, the Napoleonic adventures of Brigadier Gerard or the sci-fi escapades of Professor Challenger may still be unfamiliar with "The Maracot Deep." Published in 1929, only a year before the author's death, this short novel amply demonstrates that Doyle still retained all his great abilities as a spinner of riveting yarns, even in his twilight years. At a mere 140 pages, the novel(la) is a compact but densely written fantasy of the discovery of the remnants of Atlantis. It seems that Professor Maracot (a kind of early 20th century cross between Jacques Cousteau and Robert Ballard), along with an American naturalist and an American engineer, had suffered a terrible accident while in his bathysphere off the Canary Islands. A giant crayfish had separated the hawser connecting them to their mother ship, and down they went, 26,000 feet, into the abyss of the eponymous Maracot Deep. Miraculously, disaster is averted as Maracot & Co. are rescued by the survivors of the lost Atlantean civilization, which society has been living under the ocean floor for the last 8,000 years. Our heroes are given a tour of the Atlantean realm and witness many monstrous varieties of undersea life, including a giant electric sea-worm, poisonous purple slugs, and the sea serpent of legend. They witness some of the Atlantean relics of superscience, explore the ruins of the capital city, and have a run-in with the "Lord of the Dark Face."
This is a wonderful fantasy, and keeps the reader thoroughly entertained throughout. It is largely epistolary in nature, taking the form of various letters/"messages in a bottle" that our heroes manage to get back to the world. Doyle solves the problem of there being no light at the ocean bottom by having Maracot & Co. discover that the ocean floor's globigerina ooze is phosphorescent, due to the decomposing marine life. As for the unbearable pressure, our boys discover some mysterious compensating factor that nullifies that problem. So they are able to walk around with their vitrine helmets and oxygen tanks and explore the ocean depths very comfortably, thank you. Doyle, an ardent spiritualist in his twilight years, had his Professor Challenger character (his favorite) convert from being a hardened materialist to a believer in the unseen forces that surround us, in his 1926 novel "The Land of Mist." And in his last novel, he does likewise for Professor Maracot, whose "theories of a lifetime have crumbled about [his] ears" after his battle with the mystical Lord of the Dark Face. This really is a remarkable story. If only Doyle hadn't made one tremendous booboo. At one point in the tale, Headley, our narrator, falls in love with an Atlantean named Mona, the daughter of Scarpa, a community leader. Fifty pages later, she is the daughter of Manda, the chief of Atlantis! This is a terrible oversight on Doyle's part, and on the part of his editors, and undermines what up until then had been a meticulously put-together tale. This major slip aside, "The Maracot Deep" is guaranteed to give all sci-fi/fantasy fans a few nights of great pleasure indeed. It would make for excellent reading after one finishes C.J. Cutcliffe Hyne's classic novel of ancient Atlantis, "The Lost Continent" (1900), which details Atlantis as it was back when. Doyle tells us what's going on there now. ... Read more

67. Revealing The Bizarre Powers Of Harry Houdini: Psychic? Medium? Prophet? Clairvoyant?

Product Description
WAS HOUDINI'S FANATICAL DEBUNKING OF PSYCHICS AND MEDIUMS A SUBTERFUGE TO CONCEAL HIS OWN REMARKABLE PARANORMAL ABILITIES?

At his burial some curious and suggestive words were used by the presiding rabbi: -- "HOUDINI POSSESSED A WONDROUS POWER THAT HE NEVER UNDERSTOOD AND WHICH HE NEVER REVEALED TO ANYONE IN LIFE!"

The creator of Sherlock Holes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Harry Houdini were strange bedfellows. Doyle was a contemporary of the world's greatest magician and escape artist, who continually battled his friend over the legitimacy of life after death, and the reality of spiritualism. Doyle was a "true believer," while Houdini made it his "mission" to denounce just about all things preternatural.

Doyle was convinced - from what he personally witnessed and what others confided to him - that Houdini could read minds, dematerialize, possessed supernatural strength, and was guided by angelic forces which shielded him from harm even during the most dangerous of escape performances which likely would have caused death to others.

Doyle stated that Houdini had once remarked, "There are some of my feats which my own wife does not know the secret of." And a famous Chinese conjurer who had seen Houdini perform added, "This is not a trick, it is a gift."

Sadly, many of Houdini's feats died with him, even though they would have been an invaluable asset. "What can cover all these facts," states Doyle, "save that there was some element in his power which was peculiar to himself, that could only point to a psychic element -- in a word, that he was a medium."

Here is both sides of the story -- in the actual words of the famed Sherlock Holmes originator and Houdini himself, who went out of his way to create the impression that fakes and phonies were afoot everywhere in the "shady world" of table tapping, levitating trumpets, spirit photography, slate writing, as well as the materialization of ectoplasmic forms in the darkening shadows of the seance room. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Doyle vs Houdini Revisited
In this book, Timothy Green Beckley has resurrected the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle versus Harry Houdini debate on mediums and spiritualism from the beginning of the last century. Reprinted here is Houdini's "A Magician Among Spirits" which offers in detail his investigations that exposed many of that time's biggest mediums as frauds. But did he? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle steps in with "The Riddle of Houdini" which questions some of Houdini's proclaimed fraudulent exposures as well as his motives. One case in particular that Doyle cites claims that Houdini was called out by a medium's dead brother when he tried to rig an experiment testing her abilities. Also included are Doyle's rebuttals to Houdini's book. Was Houdini himself a medium? Did Houdini have supernatural powers? Did Houdini rig some of his debunking sessions? As Beckley points out in his intro, this debate goes on today with The Amazing Randi's million dollar offer for proof of "real magic" as well as seemingly unexplainable feats committed by the likes of Uri Geller.

Beckley serves up a treat that includes many illustrations including page after page of color playbills announcing Houdini's performances. It also has many photos showing mediums, spirit photography, newspaper clippings and diagrams by Houdini showing how mediums carried out their tricks. Also included on a CD is the last séance to try and contact Houdini in the afterlife, on Halloween, 10 years after his death.

Almost 100 years later and the great debate continues. Beckley in this book shows us where it started.

4-0 out of 5 stars Houdini's Vengence from Beyond!!
Well - this is an interesting softbound book. Primarily a reprint of Houdini's "A Magician Among the Spirits", and Sir Arthur Conan Doyles' rebuttal to Houdinis' skepticism with a nice modern intro. There's nothing objectionable to that.My four star rating (and some will think it generous) was not five stars because of technical shortcomings.Specifically, there were no illustrations on pages 53, 82, 107, 110, 113, 188, 189, 191, 192, 193, 194, 195, 196, 197 and 198; just big blank spaces with captions.I am assuming a problem in the scanning software, but this should have been caught in the proofreading. On a lighter note (and this actually RAISED my rating) the Bonus CD of Houdini's Last Seance had a video of Soupy Sales and the "Naked Lady".This must be THE VENGENCE OF HOUDINI!What else could account for it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps The Best Sherlock Holmes
Perhaps the best Sherlock Holmes story of them all. Subtle and devious. If you think you know it or have read something like it before - that's because almost every mystery writer since has copied in some way directly or indirectly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but slow
There has been a murder that Holmes is investigating. This case is interesting because plenty of small things whcih you think are not important are really the key to everything. All nine volumes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyles works with the world's best known detective compiled in one big book. This means that you will find all sixty stories that Doyle ever wrote with Holmes as protagonist in this compilation. Save about 50% compared to the single volumes and take all the stories with you in one file.Amazon.com Review
This volume, authorized by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's estate, contains all 4 full-length novels and all 56 short storiesfeaturing Sherlock Holmes. At over a thousand pages, the weighty tome is a perfect gift for budding amateursleuths, and it is an ideal companion for a long stay on a desertisland (or a leisurely trip through the English countryside). As thereader wades past the tense introductions of A Study in Scarletand moves towards such classic tales as The Hound of theBaskervilles, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," and "The FinalProblem," she is sure to draw her own conclusions about Holmes'sveiled past and his quirky relationship with his "Boswell,"Watson. Doyle never revealed much about Holmes's early life, but thejoy of reading the complete Holmes is assembling the trivia of eachstory into something like a portrait of the detective and hiscreator. By the end of the long journey through London and acrossEurope (with a long stopover at Reichenbach Falls), one is apt to havefound a friend for life. --Patrick O'Kelley ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reading!
I received the book in record time and am very much enjoying the mysteries...some of which I have seen on PBS and love now reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, but has it's faults
Seeing as how many reviews there are about the stories I'm going to be reviewing the actual book. First of all there's nothing wrong with the font, it's perfectly legible, and the books are nice and compact. There were many grammar errors in the book but I'm not sure if that's arthur conan doyle's fault and the publisher wanted to preserve the original copy or what. Also the inside blurb wasn't correct at all and is stating that arthur conan doyle killed off sherlock holmes in his last bow published in 1893? Nethertheless the stories are great but just think about buying a different edititon than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sherlock Holmes Review: 2010
In The Complete Sherlock Holmes, there are two major sections, along with quite a few shorter, chapter-sized stories about Sherlock Holmes' adventures. In the first section, A Study in Scarlet, Dr. Watson first meets Sherlock Holmes, and they engage in a murder mystery. The murderer is a man avenging the death of his lover and her father. The poor man dies shortly after he is captured.I was sad at the end of this story, because the poor man loses the love of his life, gets sick after she dies and dies right after avenging her death, and when he knew that he'd go to jail for the murders of the murderers. It was still a good story, though.

In The Sign of the Four, a woman comes to Sherlock Holmes, in response to a mysterious letter that she has received from the same mysterious person who has been sending her pearls since not long after her father's friend died. The letter tells her to come to a certain spot, and if she is suspicious, to bring two friends, who are not part of the police. She asks Holmes and Watson to accompany her. What follows is a the discovery of the man who has been sending her the pearls, and atreasure has been found, a treasure that is half hers! Miss Morstan is overwhelmed when she finds out that her missing father has died, as she feared, and the treasure would make her immensely wealthy. Dr. Watson, having come to feel affection for this woman, hides his disappointment, knowing that this will put her out of his grasp. The group go to visit the man's brother, only to find the treasure gone and the brother dead. The tale is full of adventure and excitement, and a touch of romance. I loved it! It ends surprisingly, with the treasure being gone forever, and Dr. Watson declaring his love of Miss Mary Morstan to her, and they get engaged. I love this story. It's so sweet when they say they love each other!

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, is a compilation of stories after Dr. Watson is married and goes to visit his friend, Sherlock Holmes. They go on some odd adventures, including one about red-haired men. These are shorter stories, and there are quite a few of them. They are very interesting. Some of them are kind of funny, and there's one sad one, too.

All in all, I really like this book. It's a good, adventurous book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Study in Scarlet
Great book, one of my favorite Sherlock Holms out there, the second part is kinda creepy but very interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars free edition missing some pieces, but story remains very good
I decided to start from the beginning and re-read all of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories in order, as I have read them in bits and pieces over the years.

"A Study in Scarlet" is where the stories begin, a novel length tale of brutal murders, long term vengeance, and incidentally, the story of how Holmes and Watson first meet. It's not one of the best Holmes stories, but it establishes the characters and their quirks and is a very good origin story.

It is a free edition and I can't complain too much, but as others have noted, the italicized portions of the text are missing, including a couple of notes left by the killer that include important elements of the case.If you have never read this story before, you might want to go for a better edition. But if you are revisiting like I was, it's acceptable enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story, poor Kindle edition
Conan Doyle's story of the first meeting between Holmes and Watson is very good but it is missing any lines that were italicized in the original edition. This means that Watson's list of Holmes' abilities, a major clue written at the murder scene and the final lines are all missing! I've read the novel many times so these omissions didn't upset me so much but first time readers will be confused by references to things that aren't there. hopefully there is a better Kindle version available or this one will be corrected.

3-0 out of 5 stars This version is missing a few things (on my Kindle, at least)
This is, of course, a great story. The reason I give this version only 3 stars is the fact that it is missing a few elements that are present in another Kindle version.Early in the story, Watson jots down a list of what he considers Holmes' strengths and weaknesses. This version contains the list heading, "Sherlock Holmes--his limits", but it does not tell us the 12 items in the list. The other version does.Later in the story, someone comes across a spot where a body is buried, marked by a stick in the ground with a piece of paper. What is written on that paper is missing in this version, but is present in the other version I read. There is at least one more example like these. So, if you are looking for this story, I recommend getting another version.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Study in Scarlet is terrific!
Watson, a soldier who was wounded during war, ends up aquiring lodgings with a peculiar man named Sherlock Holmes.Holmes becomes engaged in a strange mystery in which Watson ends up becoming interested in. Holmes reads every tiny detail like a book while the police don't seem to have a clue to who commited a murder in the lonely house. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars to be or not to be (free!)
I love the book, the rating is not for the quality of the stories.

However this, and many other kindle books, are advertised as "free" and then when I get to the actual buying page it shows a price - sure, its cheap, $3 or less, but that is not free.

One of the reasons I was considering getting a kindle was the huge quantity of "free" classics, but as it turns out most of them aren't. At least not for international customers.

So no kindle for me. If I have to pay for these books, I'll keep buying them in paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Read
I love a good mystery and decided to return to the best. It has been years since I read Sherlock Holmes, but the adverntures are still fantastic. A must have for the mystery lover.

1-0 out of 5 stars Price outside USA
I would apologize first because this is not the right place to vent out my frustration. But here goes, I own the paperback version of this book (bought it 10 years ago), I think its great and if you are a US citizen/resident go ahead download it and have fun reading it. I have great difficulty understanding why Amazon charges 2.00$(this is not the price of delivery as I have the WiFi only Kindle and yeah, the book is out of copyright in my country(India) as well) for this ebook as well as several other out of copyright books to non - US citizens. It is available for free on Gutenberg, but if I have to download all classic ebooks from Gutenberg I could have as well bought any other ebook reader and not the Kindle. I feel cheated as before ordering my kindle, I saw Jeff Bezos interview with Charlie Rose(http://www.amazon.com/gp/mpd/permalink/mYYH89PLHLMUW/ref=ent_fb_link?pf_rd_p=1275764362&pf_rd_s=center-26&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B002Y27P3M&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1D91A9WQWAM277VR4H80) in which he speaks about the free classics as well as Amazon's customer focus. I guess ripping off your international customers, who incidentally pay more for the Kindle(hell, I payed around 200 USD for my WiFi only device) really shows your wonderful customer orientation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovers of Sherlock Holmes will enjoy reading the twelve tales in this free Kindle edition
Kindle, as all people should know, offers a host of free books, including classics. Here is a chance to reread books that you haven't read in ages. This version of twelve of Doyle's Holmes tales is, of course, splendid, far better than watching the TV versions. Rereading the stories bring surprizes. For example, I did not know that Watson was married. I had seen speculations that he and Holmes were homosexuals, this is ok, but disproved by the second page of the first story. I also did not know - or forgot - that Holmes smoked cigars. Nor did I know that Watson had returned to practice medicine. Of course I remembered that he did not say "Elementary, my dear Watson." He said "It is simplicity itself." These and many other things reminded me that I although am no Holmes, and lack his memory, I enjoy reading about this clever thinker.

4-0 out of 5 stars very unique stories
This book is about the great detective collection of new cases is one of the best. What stands about this anthology is that it traces Holmes career from the start, and led to the right in the end. All the stories are unique and interesting in their own way. Another advantage is that in describing the more modern writers Holmes back of the book written by a list of books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sherlock Holmes for kindle
This is a fantastic anthology of sherlock holmes stories, in their published order. I just wanted to confirm that yes, there is a full clickable table of contents in this ebook - but when you use the GO TO command, it doesn't take you to it for some reason. If you 'GO TO BEGINNING', it takes you to the first page of the first story in the collection, instead of the cover page of the book. Just press Prev Page a couple times at the so-called 'beginning' of the ebook, and you will find that the full table of contents is there. 5 stars for the stories, but I'd give it a 4 star layout rating, because the contents can only be reached in this awkward manner. However, the contents are fully clickable, you can just highlight a story with the cursor cursor, and click to take you to that story, which is a good feature.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where is the table of contents?
I can't link to the table of contents or go to a chapter other than in the order in which I read them. Other than that the book is fine.a good read. But, still, a pain in the neck by having to keep to the order the book was put together.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's not to like?
This really is the COMPLETE Sherlock Holmes, at an amazing price. The only complaint I have is that it's missing the original illustrations from the Strand Magazine, which are kind of interesting.

But it's a great opportunity to meet the Master of Detection (or renew the acquaintance)!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great collection
Fantastic collection for an amazing price. It has been rather difficult for me to put this down. There really isn't much to be said about this classic other than I wish I had picked it up sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars There's a lot more to Detective Holmes...
I read Doyle's Complete works of Sherlock Holmes in the early 60's as a youngster... a red, cloth covered volume that was more than 2 inches thick. Looking back, these stories helped me learn to observe my surroundings....

5-0 out of 5 stars Conan Doyle Rooting For The Home Team
This Holmes story was written at the onset of WWI.It is an incredible look at an author who is rooting for the home team, and using the intrepid Holmes to fashion at least a fictional victory.Holmes' final, hopeful view of the Great War didn't pan out, alas. It's not a great short story, although it's certainly a highly competent one. However it's a great window into the hopeful hearts of the British as they began their bloody slog through WWI. ... Product Description

The fifteen Sherlock Holmes stories reprinted in this volume are generally held to be the most significant, innovative and influential tales featuring Arthur Conan Doyle's archetypal detective. Drawn principally from the first three Holmes collections, these selections are each followed by a concise commentary on its relation to Doyle, other Holmes tales, and the genre of detective fiction. The nine accompanying essays, which reflect the recent critical interest in Holmes, examine the stories from a variety of contemporary critical perspectives. The first five essays (by Martin Priestamn, Peter Brooks, Gian Paolo Caprettini, John A. Hodgson , and Alastair Fowler) focus in questions of narrative, deduction, and plot; the next four (by Stephen Knight, Catherine Belsey, Rosemary Hennessey and Rajeswari Mohan, and Audry Jaffe) social, historical, ideological, and gender issues. Each critical essay is preceded by a headnote that discusses the essay's critical approach. An introduction by the editor discusses the relation of Sherlock Holmes to Doyle's own life, reviews the history of the stories' publication and reception, and provides a brief overview of the contemporary critical essays. Additional sources of enrichment and direction for further study are provided by the four appendices: a chronology of Doyle's life; a note on Doyle's favorite Holmes stories; an annotated bibliography of aholmes collections and critical studies; and a list of film and video versions of the stories in the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointing book
I must confess at the outset that I was annoyed as soon as I got the book, looked at it, and found that all of the essays are simply reprints of essays that have appeared in other sources.Particularly frustrating was the fact that some of the essays are only parts of chapters, so that the authors' points regarding the Holmes stories are taken out of context of the larger essays from which they were derived.

The editor makes a number of promises about how stimulating the material will be and the connections the various authors will make across the essays.I felt, after reading the essays, that the material fell well short of the promises that were made.In short, the book was very disappointing, and I am unable to recommend the book to either the casual or scholarly reader. ... Product Description
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) is best known for his Sherlock Holmes stories and novels, yet he considered them only a small part of his literary output. He expected to be remembered for his historical fiction, especially The White Company. He also wrote science fiction novels, short stories, and horror tales. He was knighted for a pamphlet he wrote justifying England's actions during the Boer War, in which he served as a physician in a field hospital. After one of his sons was killed during World War I, he turned to spiritualism for comfort. He became a prominent spiritualist, lecturing and writing frequently on the subject. This book--the first biography of Arthur Conan Doyle written for young adults--provides a lively account of the writer's fascinating life. Pascal considers the overlaps between the fictional Holmes and Watson and their creator, and draws a memorable picture of late Victorian society. Sidebars containing excerpts from Doyle's writings, and numerous photographs and illustrations invigorate the captivating narrative.

Oxford Portraits is a new series of biographies for young adults. Written by prominent writers and historians, each of these titles is designed to supplement the core texts of the middle and high school curriculum with intriguing, thoroughly informative and insightful accounts of the lives and work of the notable men and women who helped shape history. Each book is illustrated with numerous graphics, photographs, and documents. A unique feature is the inclusion of sidebars containing primary source material, mostly excerpts from the subject's writings. A chronology, further reading list, and index rounds out every volume. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good collection
While not particularly scary, but definitely horrific at times, this collection is surely worthwhile. The settings and character types tend to all be quite similar, usually a young doctor on an ocean-going journey or medical students at a university and the writing style is virtually the same as well; however similar all these traits are, they're absolutely good ones to retheme, as it were. This is a good book to have on hand while going about your own journey, be it air, sea, or highway.

4-0 out of 5 stars The master in horror's fine horror fiction revealed
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is most famous for his Sherlock Holmes investigative short stories; but in fact he also was a master of the form in horror fiction, as THE BEST HORROR STORIES OF ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE proves. From supernatural settings to psychology horror and mysteries, a great diversity of theme, approach and subject is demonstrated in short stories which excel in high drama and intrigue.

5-0 out of 5 stars An anthology of some of the twentieth century's most chilling horror tales
The Best Horror Stories Of Arthur Conan Doyle, is expertly edited and compiled by the team of Frank D. McSherry, Martin H. Greenberg, and Charles G. Waugh is an anthology of some of the twentieth century's most chilling horror tales from by the man most well known for his great Sherlock Holmes stories. The Best Horror Stories Of Arthur Conan Doyle is very strongly recommended to all Sir Arthur Conan Doyle fans, but most especially to enthusiasts of horror stories, thriller tales, and mysterious deceptions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but not good enough
The Stories taken from the "Tales of Terror and Mystery"tion are good but the others are quite horrible. Also the version I have has 1 story missing "The Confession" and a fantastic tale from "T&M" is not part of this collection. Production values average. Buy that collection instead. A much better deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gems of their time
Writing in the early part of this century, Doyle (best known for creating Sherlock Holmes) created a series of horror stories with a bent towards spiritualism and mystery. The selection is a good range of work with somevery strong entries. "The Case of Lady Sannox" and "TheLeather Funnel" are particular stand-outs. Some of Doyle's is moredated than others, but still definitely worth a read. ... Read more
