Silly story
I don't like to criticise so negatively but this has no humor and is definitely not on the level of the elder Dumas. I would like to sell mine but the prices are too low and not worth a PO trip. I just want to enter another opinion but recognize that I am in the minority among the others responding. So buy the book and see for yourself. It is very easy reading and I suppose was easy to write.

The story of Verdi's La Traviata
As an opera lover, I'm especially crazy for this famous, crushing tale- but anyone can appreciate the beautifully way this haunting love story is told.

Not like dear old Dad's
While "La Dame" is a very good romance and a nice read, it can't compare to the far superior works of the author's Father, Alexandre Dumas, Pere.

For the real thing read dear old Dad's.

One of the best!
I am currently writing a research paper on La Dame Aux Camelias. I have read the book many times, and every time it has the same effect on me. Dumas fils gives us a thorough understanding of the love between Armand and Marguerite, which mirrors the love he had for Marie duplessis, whose affair this book was based on. The levels of love and sacrifice are amazing and leave the reader craving more. After the book is finished you'll still be wondering about the poor girl who died with a broken heart, so that her love could have a proper future, and have a clean name. You'll love it, I promise!

Amazing masterpiece!
I can't believe I just read this for the first time. A grand and sweeping epic that is spellbinding. Do not question...buy it!

Great Novel for the Study of Romanticism.
This Puffin Classics edition of Alexandre Dumas's classic "The Count of Monte Cristo" is very readable.If you are looking for an abridged version of this classic tale, look no further.The storyline is well captured and with many delightful descriptions still kept in.Often, however, the story seems to move quite fast and it makes you wonder what details are being left out.The level of English is about equal to the High School senior or early college level.A number of French word's are left untranslated which help add to the flavor of this classic French tale.The price is very low and its a great deal.

I would definitely recommend this novel to students studying the French Revolution and Romanticism.There is a lot of historical and stylistic content that make this novel a gem for scholastic study.Also, if you would like a portrait of the comings and goings of aristocratic Europe around 1835, this novel depicts a lot from those societies.

Note: 1-star rating is only to bring attention to the edition of the book! I'm sure this is a great book, I'm really looking forward to reading it, but after much debate I decided to get the Unabridged version, and ordered this item - I got the book in the picture, but it's Abridged.Not worth returning (Great deal, $5 book!), but just a heads up for others in the same boat.

To Grant Forgiveness Or Take Revenge.
The Count of Monte Cristo is an excellent novel, filled with a multitude of characters, rich locations, and smothered in history. It is a story of injustice and a quest for revenge that will hold your attention for hours.

The story in this novel is darker and far more engrossing than any adaptation. If you have seen the film adaptations of this book then some of the character names and general outline of the story will be familiar to you.

A young merchant sailor, Edmond Dantès is about to achieve prosperity in his life. Unbeknownst to him; his soon to be wife's cousin and a shipmate accuse Dantés of being a supporter of Napoléon I, because of a package and a letter Dantés must deliver. Villefort, the deputy crown prosecutor in Marseille, assumes the duty of investigating the matter. Upon discovering that the letter was to be delivered to his father, he covers up the matter and exiles Dantés to the Château d'If. It is here where Dantés learns an education and the whereabouts of a fortune, which will help him, exact his revenge once he escapes.

Nice edition. Wonderful story.
The Count of Monte Cristo stands alone as Dumas' best work. His character development and innovative storyline should be used as a model for fiction writing. A lengthy read to be sure, but worth every page.

Among the classics, this is one of the greats. Additionally, this edition is surprisingly well-done and isn't sloppy and riddled with errors like some free ebooks.

Highly recommended.

Amazing story - couldn't stop reading
I loved this book and really can't believe I hadn't read it before. It's an old classic, and an excellent story. The version on the kindle is great - easy to read and definitely as addictive as reading the actual hardcopy book itself. Highly recommended! You won't be able to put it down.

Formatting is wrong
Someone at Amazon needs to fix the left-hand margin... the left margin is wider than the right, and it drives me nuts!It shouldn't be that hard.

This seems to happen a lot with the free classics from Project Gutenberg.

Great book
I thoroughly enjoyed this book...it was a long book and sometimes I found it hard to follow the dialect but overall a great book.I also had no problems with my kindle after downloading this book.

Poor translation
I am reading the original (French) version side by side with this one, and I have to say that often the translation does not capture the strength and beauty of the original text. Moreover, some portions of the text are just absent. For example, on location 3782, in the original French text one can read the hidden half-text that clues the location of the treasor, whereas in this version, the text is absent.

What?! No accents?
The kindle edition has no accents. I'm not sure how you can call it a book in French without accents. This is unacceptable.

The text format of this book is terrible!
Dumas rates five stars; the story rates five stars, but the formatting makes reading it on the Kindle a nightmare!The lines of text are fixed-length, and they are longer than the width of the Kindle page, even at the smallest character-set size.Thus each line displays as one full line, followed by a short overflow (or word-wrap) line.Ugh!I asked for, and received, my money back, and I deleted the item from my Kindle.I am VERY disappointed, as I wanted to read it in the original French, but I couldn't cope with the jerkiness that the ridiculous text formatting imposes on the reading process.(OK, I see others didn't seem to notice . . . so, I guess I'm picky.But there you are:my opinion, for what it's worth.)

This is the "texte integral"
It seems that two of the three other people who have written reviews rated the wrong edition.As the other reviewer pointed out, this is the "texte integral."This is not an edition to be read by somebody who is beginning to learn French.I consider myself very fluent in French and still have difficulties with some parts of the text.

For a more advanced reader such as myself, this book is an excellent read.Dumas is an excellent author and I have enjoyed every story of his that I have ever read.The plot is well developed and engages the reader through to the end of the novel.

A Great Read
I read this book with my class in high school, and I enjoyed it then and still do now. I found it an easy read, and it has helped me to read the 'texte integral' version as well, which contains the full story in regular French, not in 'simple French' as it is in this version.
The only reason I dislike this version is that the vocabulary in the margins is not usually the more difficult vocabulary of the passage, but it is something bearable.
For someone learning French or wanting to brush up on their skills, Les Trois Mousquetaires is excellent, and it also provides the reader with one of Alexandre Dumas' fascinating tales. ... Read more

The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean and the Levant during the historical events of 1815–1838 (from just before the Hundred Days through to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France). It is primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, forgiveness and death, and is told in the style of an adventure story.

Dantès learns from Caderousse how his other enemies have all become wealthy and prosperous since Dantès' betrayal. better translation needed
I was excited to find this book. I had not heard of it before but "The Count of Monte Christo" is one of my all time favorites. Then seeing all of these positive reviews, and since the subject matter is of interest, I couldn't wait to dig in. I can still say that the subject is interesting. And I tried plugging along with it - the reason it gets 2 stars instead of 1 is that the story moves along quickly enough to hold one's interest. However, after about 150 pages I just couldn't go on.

This has got to be one of the worst translations ever! I don't know if all of these positive reviews are for this particular edition, but there is no credit for translation, and it's easy to see why. I don't speak French, but it seems as if someone who is not a writer did a straight translation from the French, without taking into account any of the idiom or sentence structure differences.And the constant repetition is soy annoying: everyone is always saying "ah, ah" at the beginning of their sentences. Another character says "mordi", whatever that means, at the beginning of everything he says. And words repeated as a sentence introduction, apparently to convey emphasis and excitement: "Well! Well!" "Go! Go!""Kill! Kill!" and so on, are just too annoying.

I don't have a problem with period dialog, especialy in a book written 150 years ago. But a translation needs to convey the intent and style of the writer, while making it understandable, and readable, in the language, and period, it is being translanted into. And it should be consistent with the period. Characters saying "thanks", mixed in with very archaic language forms everywhere else, just makes no sense.

It was all just too irritating and I didn't feel like I was reading something by Dumas. There are just too many great books out there - don't waste your time on this one.

action, romance, intrigue
I bought this book because I enjoyed Dumas' other works.Although "Queen Margot" certainly has much to recommend it: intrigue, romance, action, I did not enjoy it as much as "Three Muskateers" or "Count."The ending is especially unsatisfying.

A true classic
Alexandre Dumas pere was a master of story telling.If he was still living today he would definitely write some of the most popular television series.This is how this novel reads, as a TV series, and this is also howit was written, since it was first released in 2 page instalements in 19thcentury french dailynewspapers.Every page ends in some sort of dillemaor with an item a suspense.There is never a boring moment.Of course,even if this book is based on actual historical events, it cannot beconsidered a true rendition of what really happened.Nevertheless, Dumassucceeds in making his characters so alive, that you feel you are livingthrough the intrigues with them.You feel what they feel.A truemasterpiece of literature, in any language; and by the way, the book is athousand times better than the movie.

Great book
When I started reading this book I thought it would be classic, boring, long story about some french queen - I was wrong. I could not stop reading it before I finishad. In my opinion every one who likes interesting booksshould read it. I am sure he will not regret it.

Hated it
Okay, classic book. So I read it. I could tell the translation was pretty terrible, but I could also tell that I hated the underlying book anyway. Maybe the play or the movies are better. The heroine is apparently based on a real woman, the stunning Marie Duplessis, a Parisian courtesan who died at the age of 23. But if the "hero" is based on the author, I can only say that Marie had a lucky escape. Eventually that dunderhead might have thought of marrying her -- although it certainly never crosses his mind while he is professing eternal love and vowing never to leave her. The incomprehensible attitudes of 19th century Frenchmen permeate the book, and what they call "morality" strikes the modern reader as wickedness, cruelty and stupidity. So I cannot recommend this maudlin tale of love and death in 19th century Paris. Sorry. ... Read more

Start with The Three Musketeers, then Twenty Years After
Then you'll say as another reviewer "why haven't I read this before"? And there are TWO MORE to go. Leave these around the house for some others to discover some day.

More swashbuckling fun from the Musketeers!
This book is part one of a three part series, the next two being the Louise de la Valliere, and the final being the more well known Man in the Iron Mask.I understand this was originally one HUGE book, but is now more commonly broken up into these three books.

This book starts about ten years from where Twenty Years After (Oxford World's Classics) ended. Although the book is titled the Vicomte de Bragelonne (who is the son of Athos), we don't see much of him except for the first and last parts of the book.The rest is filled with the adventures of D'Artagnan and Athos while they separately scheme (unbeknownst to the other) to aid Charles II of England to claim his throne.LOL, D'Artagnan's scheme in regards to General Monk.Aramis and Porthos are up to something mysterious and make only the briefest of appearances. The rest of the novel is filled with the mysteries and intrigues of the French court, and ends with the marriage of Henrietta (Charles II's sister) to Louis XIV's younger brother, Phillip.

If you loved the musketeers, history and intrique it is well worth your time to spend on these books.

Having purchased The Three Musketeers and The Man in The Iron Mask I realised that there were three intermediate novels pulling the story together.Twenty Years After, The Vicomte De Bragelonne and Louise de La Valliere bring the complete story of the musketeers into focus. To gain the most from these stories they need to be read as virtually one book in five large chapters.

Focus of the Story Changes
If you are reading this review, you have probably already read the Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After.You are wondering if it is worth it to continue with the series.If you decide to go on, you have three more 600+ page novels ahead of you.That is a lot of time and energy.

If you are foremost into the swashbuckling aspect of the Musketeer stories, I would not go forward.The Musketeers are now in their late 50's.They are still vital characters but they are no longer young men looking for any excuse to duel with the Cardinal's Guard.From this point on, there is a lot less sword play and campaigning.The focus of the story moves to the intrigues of Louis XIV court.

I am continuing with the series because I like the characters.I want to find out what happens to the four friends.In this novel, D'Artagnan and Athos are the principal characters.Aramis and Porthos do not show up for the first few hundred pages.Dumas has kept me entertained for the first two thousand pages of this saga and I am counting on him to keep me entertained for the next 1500 pages.

A cumbersome but worthwhile finale
After writing The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years after, Dumas wrote a third installment to the trilogy. It is probably the most controvercial book in the trilogy, as can be revealed by reading many of the reviews. For starters, it's LONG: over 200 chapters. As a result, the English-speaking world has split it into three books: The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Valiere and The Man in the Iron Mask (the most famous volume). The length is certainly a problem, in fact is it THE major flaw in the conclusion of the trilogy. Dumas is never terse or concise, but in this three-part book, he produces an monolith. This was largely due to him overcomitting himself and having to write this much for financial reasons. However, while this is a major setback, the three books still have elements of great, almost sublime Dumas left in them, which can be extracted if approached in the right way.

The final installment of the trilogy represents the dear old Athos, d'Artagnan, Porthos and Aramis maturing and growing old. The trilogy thus moves from more active and straightforward swashbuckling to a more complex and sombre picture. Like the previous book Twenty Years After, it is not completely clear as to who's in the right and who isn't, only this time it is more so. Like the previous book, age has placed the former Musketeers in a somewhat divided situation, this time involving many a clandestine dealing of state and international level. Finally, in this three-part saga, we are introduced to a huge number of characters while our Four at times take a back seat for several hundred pages. This has been criticised as well, but has a point.

In terms of this specific volume (The Vicomte de Bragelonne), it is the most historical one, as initially d'Artagnan and Athos are brought out of retirement, united in their royalist causes. After completing an adventure reminiscent of their former, more "action-packed" years, the intrigue of the newly-ascended Louis XIV begins. It is here that we can see Dumas as painting a brilliantly detailed picture of what he sees as France moving towards a more centralised, efficient yet pedestrian autocracy from Richeleu to Mazarin to Louis XIV. For the first time, d'Artagnan finds himself serving (and appreciated by) the king, however, the novel asks the question of whether this is at all a good thing. In the power-struggles of the court, we see the irony that the "detractors" of progress are often more honourable than its supporters.

If you only expect more action involving the Four, then don't bother reading this at all. However, if you persevere, you will get to see sublime glimpses of what a long way the Musketeers of old have come (for better or worse), what they think about the entire society they live in and what Dumas thinks. As well as some of the old-fashioned-style adventure. I think that the fact that this is obscured by an overly-drawn-out style, while annoying, does not detract from this being an honourable conclusion to the trilogy. ... Read more

Concocting and implementing such exceedingly devious acts of revenge require a lot of pages.
This extremely long (1082 pages) book, set mostly in France, spans nearly a quarter century starting from the year 1815. It's about a twenty-year old man named Edmond Dantes, whose early fame (as a young, newly assigned ship captain) is short lived. Jealous of his success, a few bad men take actions that, on his wedding day, lead to his arrest and long imprisonment for a crime he didn't commit. After leaving the prison, he again gains fame, as well as fortune, learns all that he can about the men whose actions led to his demise, uses the information to concoct acts of revenge, ingratiates himself with the bad guys and their family members, and strikes. Although I'm not a fan of spending the time required to read really long books, in this case, I'm glad I did. An amazingly easy read, The Count of Monte Cristo has a complicated, well-thought out plot (though that involving V near the end is hokey and the ultimate fate of H troublesome) and great characters. Plus, it's always nice to see the good guys gain and the bad guys get their due.Also good: The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, and An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser.
