Product Description
"Every Christian is called to press on toward maturity in Christ," writes Charles Colson in the foreword. "True believers, who understand the enormity of ChristÂ’s sacrifice and the abundance of the life for which he has redeemed us, hunger and thirst to know him better and love him more."

Growing in GodÂ’s Spirit, with three selections from Jonathan EdwardsÂ’s writings, outlines "in clear and compelling terms," writes T. M. Moore, "what it means to grow in GodÂ’s Spirit, and how we may begin to do so with greater consistency and delight." Edwards calls us to a life of faith that - is infused with a transcendent perspective - delights in the prospect of heaven and the presence of God - takes seriously the challenge and privilege of growing in GodÂ’s Spirit.

Moore divides these selections into brief chapters and adds subheads. Each of the 13 chapters concludes with questions to promote reflection on the meaning and application of EdwardsÂ’s words. MooreÂ’s introduction helps launch the reader into EdwardsÂ’ text. Growing in GodÂ’s Spirit is the first in a series of books making the writings of Edwards accessible to all.

"Edwards’s writings, some of the greatest treasures of the Kingdom, have enormously influenced my life. . . . This collection will be an invaluable resource for pursuing growth in God’s Spirit." —Charles Colson ... Read more

Product Description
Though he was orphaned at age fourteen, repeatedly struck with debilitating illnesses, and unfairly expelled from college, Brainerd allowed nothing to deter him from serving God wholeheartedly. He traveled thousands of miles by horseback across treacherous terrain to preach the gospel to remote Indians. Their benefit ultimately brought about his early death at the age of 29. This book not only offers a captivating story, but an uplifting buoy for those who are weary, distant, or discouraged. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Native Rescuer
David Brainerd's recorded life speaks my heart and breath--my longings for my heavenly home. This is a must read for all as it washes away the deceiving beguilement of trendy Christianity.

Traveling through his pages of life, you witness his true mission that of only knowing Christ and Him crucified, 1 Corinthians 2:1-2. He was one of few who despised this vile world with its entertaining ways.

His soul displayed was that of a faithful, humble, loyal pastor who ministered to the natives in isolated areas of New England. He never set himself above these socially rejected ones who he found to be quite refreshing in contrast to snobbish white folk. He became known among fur trappers as "the man who trapped Indians with love."

Below are experts from David Brainerd's diary. The initial are the quotes of "His Heart." The following are observances of "His Natives."

His Heart:

"I know I long for God and conformity to His will, in inward purity and holiness, ten thousand times more than for anything here below."

"God was so precious to my soul, that the world, with all its enjoyments, was infinitely vile. I had no more value for the favor of men, than for pebbles."

"Spent the day mainly in conversing with friends; yet enjoyed little satisfaction, because I could not find but few disposed to converse on divine and heavenly things.Alas, what are the things of this world, to afford satisfaction to the soul! In secret, I blessed the God for retirement, and that I am not always exposed to the company and conversation of the world.Oh, that I could live in the secret of God's presence!"

His Natives:

"Discoursed from John 4:13, 14. There was a great attention, a desirable affection, and an unaffected melting in the assembly. It is surprising to see how eager they are to hear the Word of God.I have oftentimes thought that they would cheerfully and diligently attend divine worship twenty-four hours together if they had an opportunity so to do."

"I never saw any appearance of bitterness or censoriousness (being critical) in these, nor any disposition to `esteem themselves better than others.'"

4-0 out of 5 stars from the back of the book
This is a rare, almost forgotten document depicting life in pre-Revolutionary America during the period when religious enthusiasm swept the colonial frontier. From 1743 to 1747 Brainerd had been a missionary to the Indians. Riding alone, thousands of miles on horseback, he kept a journal of daily events that he continued until the week before he died, at the age of twenty-nine, in Edwards' house. First published in 1749, the book became a spiritual classic in its own time. As the first popular biography to be published in America, it went through numerous editions and has been reprinted more frequently than has any other of Edwards' works. But what has not until now been known is that Edwards made drastic alterations in the original text. He shaped the narrative events to fit his own needs, presenting Brainerd as an example of a man who by example and deed opposed the rationalist, Arminian stance. Because the Yale edition is the first to print that portion of Brainerd's manuscript that survives, set in parallel columns with Edwards' text, these alterations can readily be discerned.

Product Description

What is a true Christian?  What is the church?  Though these are fundamental questions they often go unanswered in our current evangelical context.  Far too many pastors and thinkers celebrate the trappings of faith and the mere benefits of Christianity, ignoring the biblical testimony on true conversion that shouts from countless texts from Scripture.

This has fed an age-old problem: nominal Christianity.  Though Edwards is sometimes presented as a scourge, a mean-hearted parson who lived to belt out thunderous damnations, a careful study of the historical record and of Edwards’ writings shows that he was in fact a Christian man devoted to the cultivation of true and saving faith in a spiritually fickle people he tenaciously loved.

The problem of noncommittal Christianity did not end with Edwards.  It not only survives but thrives in the current day.  In studying it, then, we are studying ourselves. We see that nominal Christianity, a considerable challenge today, has historic roots.  We need not face this problem alone, growing more discouraged by the day, flailing as we try method after method to address the problem, but can find solace, instruction, and encouragement from the biblically saturated life and ministry of Jonathan Edwards.

Easily accessible and readable, you do not need to be a scholar to enjoy these insights about Jonathan Edwards and his writings.

The Essential Edwards Collection
On True Christianity
By
Owen Strachan an Doug Sweeny

This is one of a five-volume set on the life and works of Jonathon Edwards. This particular volume deals with the issue of true Christianity. This volume contains five chapters: 1) The Contemporary Problem of Nominal Christianity, 2) The Problem of Nominal Christianity in Edward's Day, 3) Edward's Answer to Nominal Christianity, 4) Powerful examples of True Christianity, and 5) Edward's Dismissal and the Contemporary Call to True Christianity.

The authors of this book point out that nominal Christianity is a real problem in our day, as it was also a problem in Edward's day.A nominal Christian is one that claims to be a Christian, but has little or no evidence of being a true disciple of Jesus Christ."Nominal Christianity is a notoriously difficult problem to trace and spot." Pg 27" Two things are immediately clear, though: the state of the maturity of many Christians is quite low, and many churches are failing to educate their people in the basics of Christianity." Pg 27

Jonathon Edward's was very concerned with nominal Christianity.

" He devoted considerable attention
to unmasking nominal faith by
exposing its weaknesses and
revealing its inconsistencies.
he never let himself grow satisfied
with high attendance and easy praise." Pg 50

Chapters 1-3 are negative in the sense they are dealing with the problem.Chapter 4 is very positive because it gives two outstanding examples of people living a true Christian life. These two were contemporaries of Jonathon Edwards; David Brainerd and Abigail Hutchinson. This chapter alone is worth reading this book, as the reader is able to learn a little more about these two lives. These were not perfect people by any stretch of the imagination, but you are able to get a tiny glimpse of the struggles and successes of these two who were true followers of Jesus.

Chapter 5 deals with the surprising firing of Jonathon Edwards from his church in Northampton, and how that relates to the church today in the fight for true Christianity. ... Read more

Product Description
Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) is widely recognized as America's greatest religious mind. A torrent of books, articles, and dissertations on Edwards have been released since 1949, the year that Perry Miller published the intellectual biography that launched the modern explosion of Edwards studies. This collection offers an introduction to Edwards's life and thought, pitched at the level of the educated general reader. Each chapter serves as a general introduction to one of Edwards's major topics, including revival, the Bible, beauty, literature, philosophy, typology, and even world religions. Each is written by a leading expert on Edwards's work. The book will serve as an ideal first encounter with the thought of "America's theologian." ... Read more

It is indeed fitting that one of America's finest emerging theological minds, Gerald McDermott, edited this introduction to the Edwardsian canon. The editor's inclusion of many European scholars--including Eastern Europeans such as the highly-regarded Tibor Fabiny--demonstrates the continuing widespread impact of the American Colonial theologian of gracious affections and of "God's beauty."

Well organized (to include scholarly points and rejoinders, or counterpoints) and impeccably edited, this gem-like analysis of Edwards' approach to revivals, scripture, philosophy, and even the soteriological relevance of other religious traditions will benefit Edwards scholars, religious leaders, and theologians for years to come.

Product Description

Avihu Zakai analyzes Jonathan Edwards's redemptive mode of historical thought in the context of the Enlightenment. As theologian and philosopher, Edwards has long been a towering figure in American intellectual history. Nevertheless, and despite Edwards's intense engagement with the nature of time and the meaning of history, there has been no serious attempt to explore his philosophy of history. Offering the first such exploration, Zakai considers Edwards's historical thought as a reaction, in part, to the varieties of Enlightenment historical narratives and their growing disregard for theistic considerations.

Zakai analyzes the ideological origins of Edwards's insistence that the process of history depends solely on God's redemptive activity in time as manifested in a series of revivals throughout history, reading this doctrine as an answer to the threat posed to the Christian theological teleology of history by the early modern emergence of a secular conception of history and the modern legitimation of historical time. In response to the Enlightenment refashioning of secular, historical time and its growing emphasis on human agency, Edwards strove to re-establish God's preeminence within the order of time. Against the de-Christianization of history and removal of divine power from the historical process, he sought to re-enthrone God as the author and lord of history--and thus to re-enchant the historical world.

Placing Edwards's historical thought in its broadest context, this book will be welcomed by those who study early modern history, American history, or religious culture and experience in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read
This devotional is full of thoughtful, excellent selections from a variety of Edwardsean literature. The editor has even incorporated selections from unpublished sermons housed in the archives of Yale University. The 'other' negative reviewer has obviously never read this particular devotional. The introduction to the book is also excellent

2-0 out of 5 stars No thought went into this
First of all, I love Edwards. Here's the problem with this devotional. Many entries have little substance.I got the feeling the publisher just randomly chose paragraphs from Edward's sermons, and pasted them in there!

Many entries say a bunch of nothing. It's as if the publisher closed their eyes, ran their mouse cursor over a sermon, copied a section, opened their eyes, then pasted it on the blank sheet for a days entry.

You'd be better off to just go buy a book of Edward's sermons and read a paragraph or two of it a day.

Try buying Charity and It's Fruits or His book on knowing Christ.

This devotional, is just a bunch of meaningless, unthought out excerpts. ... Read more

Product Description

This final volume in The Works of Jonathan Edwards publishes for the first time Edwards’ “Catalogue,” a notebook he kept of books of interest, especially titles he hoped to acquire, and entries from his “Account Book,” a ledger in which he noted books loaned to family, parishioners, and fellow clergy. These two records, along with several shorter documents presented in the volume, illuminate Edwards’ own mental universe while also providing a remarkable window into the wider intellectual and print cultures of the eighteenth-century British Atlantic. An extensive critical introduction places Edwards’ book lists in the contexts that shaped his reading agenda, and the result is the most comprehensive treatment yet of his reading and of the fascinating peculiarities of his time and place.

Those who remember Jonathan Edwards (1703--1758) only for his sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" overlook his many and varied contributions to American church history. A man of powerful intellect, Edwards is credited with instigating America's first Great Awakening. Beginning in 1734, six sudden conversions in his parish turned into a flood of thirty per week, ultimately drawing people from up to a hundred miles away. In addition to preaching, Edwards also wrote several books, including Treatise on Religious Affections, served as a missionary to Native American tribes, and was briefly president of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton). He died at age fifty-four after receiving a smallpox inoculation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Succinct Biography on the Puritan Divine
~Jonathan, Edwards: The Great Awakener (Heroes of the Faith)~ an intriguing, albeit succinct, biographical sketch of the great Puritan evangelist Jonathan Edwards who inaugurated the Great Awakening with his sovereign grace preaching. The author captures his early childhood and his gradual cognizance and acceptance of the sovereignty of God, particularly in our redemption. It is fairly objective and features selections from his writings, though academic readers might prefer the larger tome on Edwards by George Marsden. The Heroes of Faith series features biographies of other Sovereign Grace preachers such as C.H. Spurgeon, George Whitefield and John Bunyan, though I haven't looked at them. It features an appendix with a copy of his most famous and powerful sermon, ... Read more
