Product Description
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 - December 21, 1940) was an American writer of novels and short stories, whose works are evocative of the Jazz Age, a term he coined himself. He is widely regarded as one of the twentieth century's greatest writers. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the Twenties. He finished four novels, including This Side of Paradise, with another published posthumously, and wrote dozens of short stories that treat themes of youth and promise along with despair and age. This Side of Paradise is the debut novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Published in 1920, and taking its title from a line of the Rupert Brooke poem Tiare Tahiti, the book examines the lives and morality of post-World War I youth. Its protagonist, Amory Blaine, is an attractive Princeton University student who dabbles in literature and has the book's theme of love warped by greed and status-seeking. ... Read more

F. Scott Fitzgerald makes anti-bellum Baltimore his setting for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," a fantastical tale with some Poe-like overtones about a baby born at age seventy who then lives life in reverse, his hair turning "in the dozen years of his life from white to iron-gray, the network of wrinkles on his face becoming less pronounced."

This collection also includes "The Lost Decade," "Three Hours between Planes," "The Bridal Party," and "Babylon Revisited." ... Read more

Product Description
Collections of early writings of famous writers can oftenbe dreary affairs, but F. Scott Fitzgerald's early work abounds withlife. Because he served such an unusually short apprenticeship hewrote his first, highly successful book, This Side of Paradise, soonafter graduating Princeton...his undergraduate work is of specialinterest. In fact, his college and professional writing careersoverlapped. Both This Side of Paradise and Flappers and Philosophers incorporated (with some reworking) some of the early Princeton storiesgathered in this volume. In this first complete and chronologicallysequenced collection of Fitzgerald's writings for two Princetonpublications, The Tiger and Nassau Lit, we can witness Fitzgerald'sdramatic growth. We can almost hear him find his voice as a writer. Opportunities to trace the development of style of so significant awriter are rare. These early works of his provide a mirror to histimes. His words and the often whimsical sampling!

Fitzgerald stands at center stage throughout this book, but some ofthe "supporting characters" are notable figures in their ownrights. Two of Fitzgerald's closes Princeton friends also opted forwriting careers: author/poet John Peale Bishop and Edmund "Bunny"Wilson, who was Fitzgerald's editor at Princeton and became hislifelong "literary conscience" not to mention the most importantliterary critic in America. These two names will be seen on themasthead of the Nassau Lit along with Fitzgerald's. Scholars will alsobe fascinated to note that key themes found in Fitzgerald's maturefiction come into focus in his undergraduate work. Heroes and heroinesrecognizably Fitzgeraldian populate these pages. And the abundantoriginal artwork culled from back issues of The Tiger and Nassau Litgives the book a delightful visual appeal found in no other Fitzgeraldbook. ... Read more

Product Description

For his keen social insight, glib sophistication, and breathtaking lyricism, F. Scott Fitzgerald stands as one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century. His biographers all note the importance of his boyhood in St. Paul, where, as he put it, he lived in "a house below the average on a street above the average." Fitzgerald?s sensitivity about wealth and position?later made evident in such classics as The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night--was bred of his St. Paul family and associations. F. Scott Fitzgerald?s St. Paul is a city of winter dreams and ice palaces, lakeside parties and neighborhood hijinks. These are stories of ambition and young love, insecurity and awkwardness, where a poor boy with energy and intelligence can break into the upper classes and become a glittering success. This selection brings together the best of Fitzgerald's St. Paul stories?some virtually unknown, others classics of short fiction. Patricia Hampl's incisive introduction traces the trajectory of Fitzgerald?s blazing celebrity and its connections to his life in the city that gave him his best material. Headnotes by Dave Page provide specific ties between the stories and Fitzgerald?s life in St. Paul. "Fitzgerald is a presence in St. Paul, a ghost who patrols his old neighborhood and keeps talking to us. He sits on Mrs. Porterfield?s porch on Summit Avenue, smoking and talking about writing, and it is always that gorgeous summer just before he finished the book, hit it big, went to New York, married the girl. This lovely book sets out our claim on him. We have no Fitzgerald museum in St. Paul, no boyhood home restored--the family lived in apartments--but this book is the only monument he needs, his own stories, with historical notes, and Patricia Hampl's graceful shining essay for absolution, and Zelda?s benediction." -- Garrison Keillor "These are wonderful stories, including several of the greatest Fitzgerald ever wrote. Anyone interested in Fitzgerald or the importance of place in fiction will want to read this book. And anyone who does will find it a delight." -- Scott Donaldson, author of Hemingway vs. Fitzgerald "In one of the ironies of fate of which life is so fond, the literary world knows the biography and work of F. Scott Fitzgerald better than it knows the particulars of the city where he was born. Fitzgerald loved, hated, and was obsessed by St. Paul, and in her brilliant introduction to these stories, Patricia Hampl shows us why. These stories and this wonderfully informative introduction give St. Paul a local habitation and a name, and they place Fitzgerald?s ambitions and gifts in a cultural context too often ignored or forgotten." -- Charles Baxter, author of Saul and Patsy

Product Description

Boyhood pranks in the backyards of Cathedral Hill mansions. Young love at the Minnesota State Fair. Jazz Age parties at the University Club, golfing and dancing at the White Bear Yacht Club. F. Scott Fitzgerald's St. Paul boyhood shaped him--and provided scenery and plots for many of his most successful short stories. Fitzgerald's parents moved many times, but they stayed in the same well-to-do city neighborhood. The young writer continued this pattern after his marriage and early popular success. In this book, informative biographical detail blends with lustrous vignettes from the fiction of one of the greatest writers in twentieth-century America, offering easy access to over 100 places of interest in Minnesota?s capital city. The first part of this guidebook tells the story of Fitzgerald in St. Paul by describing his connections to 35 significant places in the city, from his birthplace to the schools, homes, and businesses he knew. Part two identifies 106 places associated with the city's most famous literary son.

Product Description
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was an Irish American Jazz Age novelist and short story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. He was the self-styled spokesman of the "Lost Generation" - Americans born in the 1890's who came of age during World War I. He finished four novels, left a fifth unfinished, and wrote dozens of short stories. The 1920's proved the most influential decade of Fitzgerald's development. His debut novel, This Side of Paradise (1920) examines the lives and morality of post-World War I youth. Flappers and Philosophers (1920) was his first collection of short stories. His second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922), demonstrates an evolution and maturity in his writing, and provides an excellent portrait of America during the Jazz Age, as does Tales of the Jazz Age (1922). The Great Gatsby, which many consider his masterpiece, was published in 1925. It has since been adapted for the theatre and filmed several times. His last novel was Tender is the Night (1934). ... Product Description
This volume brings together three series of short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald - the Basil Duke Lee stories of 1928-29, the Josephine Perry stories of 1930-31, and the Gwen Bowers stories of 1936. The texts published here are based on surviving typescripts that preserve Fitzgerald's final revisions for their first publication in the Saturday Evening Post. Collations have revealed cuts and revisions by the Post editors aimed at removing profanity and blasphemy, sexual innuendo, real names of people and places, and references to racial prejudice. These passages have been restored to the Cambridge texts. This volume includes a scholarly introduction, a record of variants, facsimiles and other illustrations, and an appendix that presents early endings for the stories 'The Captured Shadow' and 'Basil and Cleopatra'. Full historical notes identify popular songs, sports heroes, literary works, Broadway shows, and sources for the stories. ... Read more
