Product Description
What is the relationship between E. M. Forster's quintessentially British novels, stories and essays and the abstrusely historical and erotic musings of the Greek poet C. P. Cavafy? The answer is both complex and illuminating.

The apparent differences are bridged by Forster's penchant for antiquities and interest in matters Oriental, by Cavafy's Anglophilia and British education. While these facts have generated comparative criticism that places novelist and poet in a Hellenistic continuum, the scholarly discussion to date has overlooked the ideological tensions that separate these two important modernists along a cultural divide. Hellenism is a way into their shared interests in the classical past, yet it also marks a point of dissension regarding the essence of Greek civilization. Similarly, their Orientalist visions led them to radically diverse configurations of the East.

Dr. Jeffreys's parallel reading of Forster and Cavafy explains not only how Forster and Cavafy were both rooted in Western Hellenism, but also how their suppositions about it diverged significantly and how the two confronted the Orient in quite different ways. New light is also cast on their friendship; their different political views may have impeded its development.

|Eastern Questions: Hellenism and Orientalism in the Writings of E. M. Forster and C. P. Cavafy| makes use of unpublished documents, newly edited unfinished poetry (here made available for the first time to an English readership), and lesser-known texts, both fictional and nonfictional. The exchange between literary and non-literary texts, prose and poetry, focuses the ideological center of Forster's lifelong engagement with Greece and India and identifies the essence of Cavafy's prolonged fixation on matters Hellenic. In the process Jeffreys's New Historicist study applies contemporary critical trends in modern Greek studies to Forster criticism, producing an incisive, fresh reading of the relationship and the Cavafy and Forster canons. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Shards of Unfinished Novels
This volume contains several parts of what EMF managed to write before writer's block set in. There are no real plots - the books end before the plots have any chance to develop - so what you get is usually a handful of characters and scenes in typically Forsterian style.
One cannot help but wonder - would they be good novels? My impression of the eponymous Arctic Summer is that at least this one would not. Certain elements and scenes seem to have been used before (close reading reveals especially similarities to A Room with a View), and there is little new and striking. The central conflict between action and ideas would probably be too little to sustain another novel after Howards End.
In short - this volume a necessary reading for any true Forsterian (you may have a preview if you take a look at the recently published mass-market paperback of Arctic Summer) but not necessarily for the general reading public. General reading public, however, should immediately aim for the last novel Forster managed to complete: A Passage to India.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arctic Summer, EM Forster's"unwrittennovel
The unorthodox narrative, the unfinished novel buried within books must be deciphered as a palimpsest by an archeologist-reader. Not only does it explore the classical themes of Forsteriana, but it goes beyond the boundaries of traditional patterns of writing and reading, fanning out a new range of perspectives and interpretations. Arctic Summer is a World of Art everlastingly shaping and altering what exists. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars interrelationships in a closed society
I suppose unless you are a fan or studying EMF in particular these letters seem only of passing interest. If anything the interrelationships with others of note are interesting. Ray Monk's bio of Russell has many familiar players. This was a pretty closed society. Meanwhile I am reading Collingwood's autobiography which is very interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Passage to Truth, A Passage to Humanity
When I read any worthwhile book, I write down memorable quotations in my Moleskine notebook in an attempt to fight the inevitable mental atrophy that comes as college recedes further into the rearview mirror. With this book, I wrote down over ten pages' worth--yes, it was that good, and there are so many choice phrases I despaired of trying to find a representative one and hope you will instead discover them for yourself. It was funny, it was painful, it satirized the British while also inspiring sympathy for any people out of place in a land not their own.

I was slightly skeptical at how relevant a book about the British Empire could be sixty years after Indian independence, but like any great book, this one both evoked its time, and spoke with timeless lessons (and on second thought, a few decades is an eye-blink for one of the world's oldest civilizations). As long as we have different civilizations coming into conflict on this planet, this book should be required reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars fast shipping, cheap price, book in lousy condition
this book came quickly and was very cheap. I knew it wouldn't be in like-new condition since it was used, but I wasn't expecting the glue on the binding to be old and brittle and to have dozens of pages drop out in the middle of class. I ended up rushing to Barnes and Noble and buying a new version that would hold together.

Overall, fast shipping and good price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual Introduction to E. M. Forster
This fairly small book is a gem for every Forster fan. Not only does it present a succint but complete biography of this great British writer but illustrates it with numerous pictures (photographs mainly but also drawings and paintings) of himself and his friends and relatives.
If you are a Forster fan this is a good place to start your adventure with his biographies but it will certainly only make your crave for more and here is when larger and more detailed works of Furbank and Beauman will come handy. ... Read more

Product Description

E. M. Forster's novels have always been popular, but he does not belong to the heavyweight category of a 'modernist' and his achievement has often been slighted or reduced as being a celebration of 'Englishness' and the Edwardian era. This New Casebook draws together approaches to Forster's work from many aspects of new critical theory and establishes a new case for him as a figure of far more than merely conventional interest with a central place in the development of twentieth-century English literature.
