Editorial Review

Product Description
This exhaustive reference work examines the complete fictional works of Dick Francis, a former steeplechase jockey to Queen Elizabeth and accomplished British novelist. As of 2006, Francis has written one volume of collected short stories and 38 novels, most of which contain one or more elements related to British horse racing. Organized alphabetically, the book lists and discusses both the major and peripheral characters in Francis' novels and short stories, along with the horses, plots, locations, and themes central to each work. In one appendix, the author provides a "Private Handicap" for Francis' work, or his own personal estimation of each novel's literary merit. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A better companion volume exists
As a long-time reader of Dick Francis novels I wondered about this book. While it includes notes on novels written after 2002 I recommend a better book: The Dick Francis Companion by Jean Swanson & Dean James which is very well organized and includes an interview with Dick Francis. Sadly this much better companion guide is not yet available on Kindle and is out of print (although copies may still be available - see Amazon link at http://www.amazon.com/Dick-Francis-Companion-Jean-Swanson/dp/B000IOF012/ref=sr_1_cc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286852378&sr=1-1-catcorr). ... THREE CLASSIC MYSTERY NOVELS AT ONE SPECIAL LOW PRICE!
DEAD CERT
Alan York knew racing was a dangerous sport: horses fell, jockeys got hurt. But he also knew that the recent death of a champion rider was no accident. And it was the kind of suspicion that could get a man killed. . . .
NERVE
Just when it looked like Rob Finn would break into racing's big time, he seemed to have lost his nerve. But the horses had never felt so slow and sluggish beneath him. And when he found out the reason, he could barely breathe. . . .
FOR KICKS
When Daniel Roke left his Australian stud farm to look into an English horse-doping scandal, he discovered that men who gave drugs to horses would do much worse to human beings. . . .
DICK FRANCIS
The incomparable Dick Francis is known worldwide for his brilliant, bestselling mystery thrillers. Now, for the first time, here are the original three mysteries that kicked off his illustrious career!
"Francis captures our attention and holds us spellbound. . . . All the breathless pace we have come to expect of this superb writer."

4-0 out of 5 stars NERVE :AFairly Important Person
Dick Francis writes with economy.NERVE opens with the suicide of a jockey. The hero, Rob Finn, another jockey, and the others discuss the event. The suicide victim's wife has a fur coat and is not likely to welcome the commiserations of the other jockeys. They choose not to present themselves to be snubbed. The suicide victim had been obsessively tidy.Finn witnessed the suicide. The suicide victim and a trainer had been in the habit of exchangingacrimonious words.

The other offerings in the three novel set are equally fine. One of the advantages of a Dick Francis book is having a hero one cares about and a plot that develops smoothly from start to finish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Break-neck reading
My wife and I are avid mystery readers. Usually, one of us solves the mystery, then dares the other to solve it in less pages. But with Dick Francis, we haven't been able to solve until his character does. This makes for a very exiting, challenging books, real page turners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three feel-good stories!
Dick Francis is a master of the do-the-right-thing
novel! If you're looking for intriguing story
lines, believable characters and cover-to-cover
racing, you'll love these three novels ... Read more
