Review of Ordering Anne Frank
This website is great for ordering things. I ordered this book around September and got it in about 5 to 7 days. The book was new and really cheap compared to how it cost new. Great Product!Even Greater Website!!!

truly human and inspiring
The words and thoughts of Anne, are quite unique...inspiring, heart felt , open, spontaneous, down to earth. you can actually invision and feel a-lot about her personal thoughts and struggles, as she was recounting her childhood and then the experiences she was going through in hiding. she had many mixed feelings and hopes for the future, as she tells them, and at times there are funny parts in the book. she was several years ahead of her time and very perceptive and was able to express her thoughts very well. after checking the book out from the library I then had to find this definative edition for my own. if you are a sentimental type, and appreciate truly down to earth reading, annes pen as well, in some parts of the book was actually poetic as well. this is a collectors edition.

Got it used and looks almost new, the only one thing that reveals it is used is its smell, it smells like an old book, which I love!!!

A wonderful history book perfect for all ages
Nearly seven decades after her death, Anne Frank continues to teach the world about the ways of humanity. Ironically, in the midst of having every basic human dignity slowly stripped away, Frank shone a light on the small things that define a young life: becoming a woman, fighting with her mother, getting her first kiss, and dreaming of what her future would hold. She dreamed of a life as writer. Sadly, she would die before ever reaching womanhood. But her legacy would last permanently.

A faithful depiction of Anne Frank's story in graphic novel format
As an ardent fan of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl (Mass Market Paperback) and a keen reader of books on the Holocaust, this non-fiction graphic novel by Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colon is an excellent depiction of Anne's life story, and was produced under the auspices of the Anne Frank House. There is so much detailed information provided that it addresses almost all questions one would have on the subject of Anne Frank and the Secret Annexe (except that million-dollar question as to who actually betrayed the occupants of the Annexe).

It begins with background information on both Otto and Edith Frank, Anne's parents. It was interesting to read how Otto and his brothers were involved in the banking industry, and how Edith's family name, Hollander, was taken because they originally made their home in the Netherlands. Readers get to read about how Otto and Edith met, married, and had both Margot (Anne's older sister), and Anne of course. Together with the more salient historical information, readers are also given insights as to the distinct personalities of both Margot and Anne, who apparently showed their different personalities since they were babies (Margot hardly cried and was a quiet baby, Anne was constantly crying and demanding attention)! Anne's maturing into a self-possessed young woman (after a phase of adolescence angst) is also well-illustrated here.

The chapters of the book are well-organized in chronological order, and lots of detailed information provided for each period and event being narrated. The chapter titles are:

The illustrations are rich and amazingly detailed, many painstakingly copied from actual archival photographs that lend authenticity and credibility to the story unfolding within these pages. It is a very real and very human story, of a time that was so enveloped in darkness, where human beings committed unimaginable atrocities against other human beings because of bigotry and hatred. Anne Frank's story is one that will always hold universal appeal, and even now, decades after her death and the publication of her diary, her story bears repeating and remembering, especially for the younger generation. As Anne herself mentioned in her diary, "I don't believe war is simply the work of politicians and capitalists. Oh, no, the common man is every bit as guilty. The time will come when we'll be people again and not just Jews!" The graphic novel format also makes Anne's story and the Holocaust more accessible to the present generation.

The book ends with a chronology of events and suggestions for further reading. To that list I would like to add a couple of films and a documentary that will enhance one's understanding of Anne Frank and the times she lived in:

Excellent graphic book.
I ordered "Anne Frank" after reading that the author/illustrator team Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colon were the same duo who had produced "The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation", which I felt was very well done.

I read the original Anne Frank Diary many years ago and have kept up with the various controversies over its publishing; mainly the "white-washing" the publishers had done - supposedly with the consent of Otto Frank - of its contents. Did Otto rewrite Anne's diary to take out the personal parts? Did the publishers attempt to "universalise" Anne's diary in hopes of making it less "Jewish" and more "commercial" to the wider world? Did Hackett and Goodrich do the same with their Broadway play and subsequent movie? We're talking about the 1950's; the book's message and contents were judged much differently than they are today.

Jacobson and Colon have "updated" the Anne Frank diary and biography to today's sensibilities. Along with parts of the diary, they have written and drawn the life of the Otto Frank family, from its origins in Frankfurt, to their lives in Amsterdam, and, finally, to their fate in the German concentration camps. Only Otto emerged alive. The authors also record the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party and their subsequent take over of the German government in the early 1930's. Jacobson and Colon do not neglect, either, the friends and family and helpers who were the supporting players in the Frank family story. Their book makes harrowing reading, particularly the part about life in Auchwitz and Bergen-Belson. This book could not have been written much earlier than it was. Today's reader is ready for the truth about Anne Frank and her fate and the truth of the world around her.

This book was given to my wife as a gift, she is reading and enjoying it.

Hoping History Doesn't Repeat
The Diary of Anne Frank is a classic must-read for all young people, lest history repeat itself. I read it in High School and so have my daughters. I was saddened to see the passing of Miep Gies. Thanks to her, this piece of history was preserved. My praise goes to her and her attempt to save these people. It's strange that this resurgence coincides with the Military Channel's airing of "The World at War" which pictures Anne in the opening song amongst the flames.

Yet Another Generatiom
It has been over half a century since I read Anne Frank's diary, but it had such an impact on my life that I have never forgotten it.Today I am buying a copy for my great-granddaughters, just as I did for their mother & grandmother when they were of appropriate ages.

Anne is long gone, but her message for humanity lives on.I don't think my life & worldview would be the same if you have not allowed me to share those days in Amsterdam.Thank you, Anne.

The Diary of Anne Frank is a must read for anybody.For those who don't know, it was written by a young Jewish girl who was hiding from the Nazis during World War II.It was eloquently written, especially considering the source.It's an eye opening read.Definitely read this.

The Diary of Anne Frank had many conflicts first going into hiding because the Germans are taking Jews and sending them to their death or killing them slowly torturing them and housing them in a harsh and dangerous environment. As they go into hiding they face rough times in what they call the Secret Annex. There are many to join in the Secret Annex which give the families many heartbreaks ofargument to follow, with shortage of food supply and the worsening of the outside world, watching theirloved ones taken and sent to their death makes the members break down even further. Also worrying about getting discovered and taken by the German Soldiers and facing their potential death as well, hallucinating from the noises from the down stairs warehouse.

The dislike I encountered with this novel was the set up of it, the diary form all though unique from most books bothered me, the pace of the book also bothered me it was slow and took awhile to get to the point of the conflict in the story. What I did like about the story was detail and that behind the book it was a true event and a young girl actually went through it, it was inspiring that after it all Anne was still positive and kept hope in the world.

A sneak peek into the dynamics of hiding and trauma
This book gives a glimpse into the life of a girl who is isolated from her fun life as a popular and lively adolescent and forced to live in fear and hiding for more than 2 years.Although few of us will ever experience the horror of hiding in a house during a war with the fear of death looming constantly, many of us can relate to the consequences of isolation, and the relationship dynamics that emerge when fear abounds.The book also speaks to the creativity and resiliency of the human spirit and proves that even in the worst of circumstances there is still a chance to find bits of joy and to experience love.

the fictional Sarah's Key and the X-Men's Kitty Pryde aka Shadowcat do a better job for me
This book is very mild and didn't really tell me what was going on in Nazi'ed Europe. Also, the cover photo is not flattering unlike the photographic companion to this diary that I will be buying to introduce Anne Frank to my children.I will also be using the recent British and American miniseries.The old Millie Perkins movie was better than reading the book for me but again wasn't really enough - it's kind of like children playing Hide and Seek - it's not serious enough because if you are found, what will happen will be incomprehensible.Anne Frank celebrated Christmas in the annex and that just brings up again - why were Jews targeted?Yes, France also suffered terribly from raging jealousy of the Germans - they raped and tortured their way across France.But I think in the planning of the sequel, their eyes exceeded their reach and they knew that they wanted to cut through the Middle East to get Africa's resources and Africa was and is defenseless in terms of technology and warfare - they're too late to the party.So why Jews?Unfortunately for the Jews, a puppet regime in Turkey and one in Egypt would mean that the historical homeland of Israel is the knot in the bowtie.It was geographically necessary in the days of the Pharaohs.One of their ideas was to ship all the Jews to Israel and then blitz Israel.No need to build ovens in Europe. So not being openly anti-Semitic doesn't mean the danger has passed or is dying off with a particular generation.Think of the problem as Skynet. The problem doesn't go away.

The Diary of Anne Frank is an adapted copy of the diary of a young Jewish girl that was in hiding from 1942 to 1944, Anne Frank was a very smart young girl, and the vocabulary used in this diary reflects Anne's descriptive way of speaking. The first entry in the diary begins with when she mentions that she got the diary from Otto Frank, and then goes on to explain she may not devote so much attention to the diary, but was she wrong! The Diary of Anne Frank is a unique auto-biography type book.

I can see why this diary is so famous and talked about. Anne updates her diary very well and spend some time describing life in the annexe. Reading this certainly make me think twice about things. However, I do feel that it is given more credit than is due. At times I could feel myself becoming exasperated with the repetetive entries and counting down until the book ended. A good read, but definitely not as good as I expected. It didn't reduce me to tears.

This is a classic book and I am glad I finally own it. The price was very reasonable.I think it is very important that my 13 year old daughter gets a chance to read it because it is such an important story and is so educational. By owning it we will be able to refer to it again and again.

A young girl's brilliance and gift for writing shines through
I first read Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girlwhen I was ten, almost three decades ago, and have since read up almost anything I can find on this remarkable young woman. I've taught Anne Frank's diary in literature and history classes, and I'm always heartened to see my students' overwhelming response to the diary. It is indeed hard to imagine such a young and brilliant life be forced into hiding and living a life of fear and isolation during the Holocaust. Yet despite these trials, Anne's indomitable spirit shines through her writing, and her diary has become her enduring legacy to humanity.

In "Tales from the Secret Annex", we get to read stories written by Anne, her reminiscences and an unfinished novel. Her talent is very obvious from the well-crafted stories - she certainly had the gift for narrative writing, and her characters show a certain level of depth and insight, remarkable considering the author was only a young teenager when she penned these stories. A must-have for YA collections and as a supplement to "Diary of a Young Girl."

Great Shared Reading 7th/8th grade
I am an extremely busy middle school (6-8) Reading and Language Arts Teacher. At the beginning of the year, I was told that I would only teach Reading but because of budget and number of kids they also asked me to teach LA even though I haven't taught it in previous years. So, all the things I had planned on doing so elaborately with my Reading classes had to be cut-down. However, I have an 7th/8th grade mostly gifted group and wanted to give them a challenge. I chose Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl because it was below level as far as a lot of their lexiles are concerned but instructional level for some of the contextual clue vocab and situational information. A lot of them didn't know what a fountain pen was..

But one caveat, there is some personal things Anne goes through about halfway through the book that our principal decided she did not want to publicly share with the class which included Anne having self-exploratory dreams (masturbation) as well as girl-girl exploratory visions and occurrences (hinting on lesbianism). I don't believe this would be an issue for high schoolers but as middle schoolers we did not feel comfortable exposing that information to them (even if our society, esp our young people, are already sexting, etc. We had to think of the parents in this case). Beyond that, the TEXT IS FANTASTIC!! Please share this will all groups aged 13-18!

Warning! This is a PLAY not a NOVEL
BE AWARE!!! This is a Play and NOT a Novel.Amazon needs to update their description of this item.My Grandson needed this book to read before school starts back.An Amazon customer service person even helped me order it because he needed it quickly.We were greately disapointed when we received it.Now we have to go through the process of returning it, and ordering the correct item.Just hope the correct item comes in time for him to get it read before school starts.

excellent for kids and adults alike
Beyond the Diary is an easy to ready book with interesting pictures of Anne and her family and friends.The descriptions of the pictures are detailed and, in chronological order, lead up to the arrest of the Frank family.If one has not read Anne Frank's diary, this is a good place to start for a great introduction into the short life of Anne Frank.

Enlightening but...
Francine Prose's book is an analyzation of the diary and its aftermath, including the play, the people involved, etc. Although interesting at times, it soon grew boring. Honestly, I've read the Diary so much myself when I was younger I can pracically quote portions of it verbatim...do I really need it regurgitated to me in chunks in a three hundred page book? It could have been way shorter, and some of the information that Prose imparted wasn't the new fascinating info she tried to make it out to be...for instance, I knew that Anne had revised most of her diary herself. At the end of the day, there's really nothing new, nothing you wanted to know, that is. Did you really want to know that people were criticized Otto Frank for a variety of things including his failure to save his family and for editing his daughter's diary? Did we really want to hear that Anne did not die peacefully, as one of the inserts in the diary proclaimed, but starving, suffering, being bitten by lice and delirious? All this did was reinforce in my mind that there are some truly horrible people out there and make me despair for the future of our race.

An excellent look at Anne Frank as a person and as a writer
Francine Prose's book is a very comprehensive--but not abstract or unfocused--look at Anne Frank, as a person and as a writer, at her diary, and at her legacy and impact on our world today. It delivers much more than just the promised "The Book, The Life, The Afterlife" and yet is not too long or too dry, but instead is very readable.

She begins with a brief biographical look at the Frank family and Anne, and at Otto Frank (who is himself almost the second hero/protagonist of this book, after Anne). We learn about Anne as a girl before going into hiding, and then Prose takes a deeper look at Anne's development inside the annex, with particular attention paid to her development as a writer and artist. There are examples from the two drafts of her diary to compare and contrast, and Prose explains with close reading exactly what the improvements are.

After talking about the diary as a piece of literature, Prose moves on to discuss "the afterlife" of the book. We go with her to visit the Anne Frank Museum, and some of the people who work in the attached Anne Frank Foundation and hear from them what they are trying to accomplish. We learn about the drama that prevailed behind the scenes of almost every aspect of bringing the story to a wider audience, from the difficulties of finding willing publishers, to the squabbles over who could write the adaptations, to the way that the Annes of the stage and screen don't at all resemble the Anne of the diary. Prose also discusses various theories and essays that cover all sorts of aspects of Anne and her diary, from those who think Otto Frank censored his daughter to those who praise Anne yet seem to have completely misunderstood her (and all points in between and far beyond). There is also a long, and somewhat sickening, section about the people who claim that the diary is fake.

Finally, and much needed after hearing about the insanity and horror of the Anne Frank and Holocaust deniers, Prose turns to the teaching of Anne's diary in school. She discusses the difficulties many teachers have in finding ways to deal with the subject matter, and offers her own ideas. Last of all is a chapter about her own experience teaching the diary in a university class on close reading. She shares the responses of her students, and it is heartening to read the thoughts from these people who have come to know and love Anne the way so many readers of her diary have.

Prose does have a bias--she is unabashedly praiseful and defensive of Anne (although she does recognize Anne's faults) and her skill as a writer, and of Otto Frank. However, I think most people would agree that she has chosen the right side to have a bias for, and and I don't think it detracts from her book in any way. Instead, Prose demonstrates in this book that she has a true and deep understanding of Anne, and she shares it with the reader. I learned so much from this book, and yet it made me want to want to learn more--I now need to read either the Critical or the Definitive Edition of Anne Frank's diary, whichever I can get my hands on first. It was a pleasure to read a book about Anne Frank and her diary that was clearly written by someone who deeply cares about the original material, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who is at all interested in the subject.

`nothing new, but a fresh perspective'

Francine Prose is not the first person to argue that Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl is not the innocent, spontaneous, passionate thoughts of a teenager, but a consciously crafted literary work. She is, though, the first person to write a book that covers a phenomenon that has, through deliberate commercialization, become the saga of Anne Frank.

In Anne Frank: The Book, The Life, The Afterlife, Prose explains many of the facets of what is a remarkable story. Beginning with an engaging sketch of Anne's life, she then details the circumstances that led to the writing of the diary and then how she went about her task.

It is interesting to learn that Anne wrote and rewrote, revised and edited, always with an eye to publishing it in novel form after the war: a fact that could determine how a modern day general reader interprets her narrative. Is it a diary, or a memoir, or even an autobiography?

However, even though a vast number of people have become acquainted with Anne Frank through the diary there are many others who've gained their knowledge of her through the stage play and the film. But in so doing Prose contends they will come away with the wrong impression of Frank's complex personality and self-presentation skills. They will have been `conned' by sentimentalized, cosmetic versions of her life, a view Prose deals with at length in the second part of her book. Her tone is angry, but at the same time controlled and objective.

As the title suggests, Prose wants to do more than comment on Anne Frank and her diary, and in doing so she has produced a self-contained piece of work: one doesn't need to go to the original to get a feel for the genius of the memorable teenager who was Anne Frank.

Understanding even more of one of the classic wartime diaries
It was a surprise to find more information that I never knew and took for granted.It seemed researched well and I began to know intimately the full story behind the diary but in the end Anne Frank's story doesn't lose its magic,rather shows how a young girl produced a work of art.

The author seemed to have taken a great deal of time and effort to let the reader know what are the ins and outs of all the people behind the diary.

Life changing
This book literally changed my life.As someone with a deep interest in Anne Frank and the Holocaust, I began reading it with some concern.I have read several books involving time travel and there is nothing that irks me more than a romanticized version of Anne Frank's life.However, this is a book that brings her and other victims of the Final Solution to life for me, and it is one of the best books I have ever read.I can clearly see how easily it could have been me and my family in the Holocaust, instead of someone else.The story also does a brilliant job of linking everyday events with those of the Holocaust.I can only imagine how survivors view modern life after what they went through.It makes you think about what is really important in life.I literally began thinking about how materialistic and selfish I can be, and how little that I really worry about is of any importance.
The title is misleading however;Anne Frank does spark the story and end it, but she is really not the driving force behind the book.She appears in the Holocaust flashback for only a few pages, though those pages are tearjerking.
Nevertheless, there is a great deal of information about the Holocaust in this book.It is extremely well-written, an incredible page-turner.I almost find it difficult to believe that it is a work of fiction, it seems so real.It is a slightly more mature book, recommend at least for teenagers.Aside from the age issue, this is a story that comes highly recommended.It will alter your life forever.

the best book ever
I loved this book! As i was readig it i thought what does it have to do with Anne Frank but as i kept reading the book got more interesting and i found out what it had to do with her.

Anne Frank and Me was an emotional story about a girl in present day and in the time of the Holocaust. If you do not like books that will make you cry, then do not read this one. The author uses very realistic details about the Holocaust so that you feel like you are really there in the story. Anne Frank and Me is exciting from the very beginning. You do not have to read for hours just to get to an exciting point in the book. I highly recommend Anne Frank and Me because it is an emotional book, and it is based on a horrible but real event that happened not too long ago.

AWESOME BOOK!
Anne Frank and Me was an exceptional book and I enjoyed it very much. I can't imagine how anyone wouldn't love following Nicole through her journey starting in the 90's and ending up in year of 1942. I've read it twice and I know I'll set it down for a few months, then read it again! I recommend this to anyone with a heart! Enjoy Anne Frank and Me.

I would have to say that Anne Frank and Me is a very well written book about a modern girl trapped in a world shattered by the Nazis.Very realistic, I must say. Stunning and heartfelt book for any Anne Frank fan
this book is an awesome addition to any library, WW2, or Anne Frank collection! For anyone who has read her diary, it will make it come even more alive. this book is filled with glossy, colorful pictures and the prose is wonderful as well, telling Anne's story and some things you might not know. There's pictures of her growing up, the secret annex, and other Holocoust info and pictures. This is jsut a really great collector's book and you will treasure it for years to come. It's also a great size, and the cover is beautiful and glossy. I love this book, and whether you know Anne well and want to learn more, I highly reccomend adding this to your list!

Words and pictures of a life unfinished
It's nearly impossible to find anyone on earth who isn't vaguely familiar with the story of Anne Frank. Even if the only response is "Yeah, she wrote in her diary while hiding in an attic during the Holocaust." Of course there's much more to the story. Beyond Anne's actual diary, there are many books discussing her life, those of her family and friends, and the people who helped hide them. Not to mention theories about who may have betrayed the Franks, Van Pels, and Dr. Pfeffer.

"Anne Frank: Her life in words and pictures from the archives of The Anne Frank House" is a pretty simple and small book that drives the point home that Anne as well as those involved in her story were real flesh and blood human beings. They had goals, dreams, fears, fantasies, and needs. It's heartbreaking to see young Anne sunbathing and grinning from ear to ear on the roof of her house or writing at her desk knowing she ended up being buried in a Bergen Belsen mass grave. Margot, who dreamed of being a midwife in Palestine, was also thrown away like a bag of trash after her gruesome death. What about their mother Edith posing for the camera while shopping with her little girls dying of exhaustion and starvation in an Auschwitz infirmary, storing bread for her daughters under her mattress? And poor Otto smiling proudly with his girls sitting on his lap not realizing that he would be the only survivor of the hell they suffered.

It's been said thousands of times, but it's worth another mention. Anne Frank was one of the 11 to 17 million people whose lives were cruelly and senselessly destroyed. Knowing just that one story is heartwrenching enough. Multiplying it by thousands is unbearable. Never again.

Should be required reading for all humanity
I am currently reading this book to my three children, ages 6, 8, and 10.They remain very interested each night, and ask thoughtful questions.It is a part of history that we will never let be forgotten.

Not Much on Anne...
I had great hopes for this book, however, there is very little information on Anne, herself. While the suvivor accounts in the book are certainly interesting and valuable historically, if you are truly seeking details on Anne's last few months, you will not find it here.

One of millions
Anne Frank is definitely one of the most famous victims of the Holocaust, but it's easy to forget that her story is just one in the millions of others. Filmmaker Willy Lindwer interviewed six women who encountered Anne and the rest of the Frank family after their August 1944 arrest for his documentary The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank and released a book of the same name.

Hannah Goslar had been close friends with Anne since both were little girls and was shocked to find her on the other side of a Bergen-Belsen fence, believing that the Franks had fled to Switzerland. An entry in Anne's diary describes a frightening dream in which Hannah (or Lies as she was known) was covered in rags and dying of starvation and disease begging her friend to save her. Sadly, the situation ended up being reversed.

Janny Brandes-Brilleslijper, a captured Dutch Resistance fighter, and her sister befriended Anne and Margot in the Westerbork transit camp and all four were later transported to Auschwitz and the wasteland that was Bergen-Belsen. Janny remembers seeing Anne wearing nothing but an old blanket after tearing off her lice infested clothes during a hallucination brought on by typhus. That was the last time she saw her alive. Rachel van Amerongen-Frankfoorder remembers both girls wasted away to bones lying next to the oftentimes open door of the barracks in the dead of winter.

Bloeme Evers-Emden's, a classmate of the Frank sisters, account of life in the extermination camps digs a bit deeper than the others by focusing on the psyche of a prisoner and the importance of support groups to help each other get through the day. According to her, whatever issues Anne had with her mother while in hiding faded away in the scene of Auschwitz and the two along with Margot stuck together at all times.

While sharing Anne's final days, all of the women show a common thread of being innocent people punished and persecuted for no reason at all. Some were mothers, teens, and students. They had friends and family members who met unfortunate deaths, witnessed lives being destroyed on a daily basis, and not being able to do a thing to stop it. They also speak about how they managed to build lives for themselves out of the pure hell they endured and the importance of remembering the past so that it never repeats itself. No matter how hard it is.

A Must Read
Whenever I feel depressed, defeated, worthless and hopeless, I read this book. I've read this book more than once. Every time I read it, I gain courage and strength. This book is my Bible. It touches my heart and soul.

This novel was an eye opener for me of the Holocaust and all that the Jewish people were made to bear. Death looked them all in the eye, and from day to day, no one knew if they would see another day.They were humiliated and dragged down, stripped of their self-esteem and their strength as never before in their lives. Husbands were separated from wives, and some children from their parents. Many got sick and died before reaching the gas chambers.Many looked already dead in skeletal form breathing their last breaths.
I applaud the six women who gave interviews from this book.These women saw Anne Frank and her family and sought to help them any way they could. These were brave women, who endured the suffering of the death camps and came out alive. Hannah Elisabeth Pick-Gosslar, Janny Brandes-Brilleslijper, Rachel van Amerongen-Frankfoorder, Bloeme Evers-Emden, Lenie de Jong-van-Naarden, Ronnie Goldstein-van Cleef, we thank you for sharing this horrible time of your life.It must have been very hard to relive, so thank you. "The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank" is only periphally a book about Anne - but it is pointedly a book about Anne's experience in those last months of her life. With the exception of her close friend Hannah Goslar, who talks about her at length, Anne is mentioned only in passing by the other interviewees, all of whom were acquainted with her.But their individual stories of what they endured in Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen is also her story, and illuminates her time in the camps as she herself would have - but never got the chance to.A good addition to a library of Anne Frank material, or an excellent compendium of personal experiences during the Holocaust, whichever way is more valuable to the reader. ... Who Was Anne Frank?
Anyone who is familiar with the Who Was Series would sincerely appreciate this text.This series provides biographies on dozens of famous people, but it is written for children ages 9-12.The pages include a short amount of text and usually a sketch to accompany it.This is a quick read and provides accurate information; however, it is appropriate for the age group.The author definitely took into account the maturity level of the reader, which is appreciated.The character of Anne Frank is written so that the reader feels as though they would know her and can easily relate to some of her life's struggles.I am anxious for the next addition to this phenomenal series.A must for any classroom teacher!

wonderful series
I highly recommend this series as a wonderful way of introducing your 3rd or 4th grade child to the world of biographies. There are many personal elements shared that go beyond what the person is primarily remembered for. A must for any upper elementary teacher's classroom library!

A stunning, if flawed, book
This is all together a strange book. It contains what survives Anne's original diary (minus just over 100 words removed on request) as well as her short stories and other writings, her own rewrites and the 1951 Barbara Mooyaart-Doubleday English translation. This in itself is a failing of a scholarly endeavour as Mrs. Mooyaart-Doubleday did not work from the original documents.

The vocabulary used throughout is British English and the spelling American English; this is somewhat confusing. The book is also riddled with many typographical errors.

However, this book is stunning in the depth of its analysis and the breadth of its research. It covers the history of the Frank and Höllander families; the arrest, betrayal and deportation; the play and attacks on the authenticity of the diary. It covers the document examination and handwriting identification analysis.

The original diary writings give a better idea of the development of Anne as a writer, of the hopes and disappointments of being in hiding and the blossoming of sexuality. The other articles give context to Anne's situation.

In all, it's a fascinating work for people interested in the Anne Frank story although probably too technical and detailed to be of interest to the general reader.

Hard reading
This is not an "easy read" if that's what you're looking for.Plan to spend some time trying to get into this book.Way too technical for what I was looking for.

An ImportantAddition
I regard this book as an important addition to my collection of books written by and about Anne Frank.It is for study, rather than for casual reading.The front section of the book contains lots of information about the diary and how it was determined to be authentic.The back section compares three different versions/translations of the diary, page by page.The book contains all of the writings of Anne Frank in one volume.

Book lover but hard to follow
I loved the original Anne Frank I read well in High School. I thought this one would be really good now that I'm older. It was extremely hard to follow so I have had to put it down. I will try again later. It does have some very good parts in it and some pictures you haven't seen.

The Real Story
After reading many versions of the Diary of Anne Frank, it was great to finally see the original version Anne herself wrote, with no edits. The first part of this book details the verification process when the authenticity of Anne's diary was challenged. The second part takes Anne's original diary, her own edited version that she began just before discovery, and the published version that Otto edited and compares them in small sections together. Excellent
I'm one of those people who cries when reading a sad story. This story was beautifully written and tragic in so many ways. It was the author's personal struggles throughout the Holocaust that I found moving. Although the title refers to Anne Frank, she is a small part of Gold's overall story. I read this book as a teenager, absolutely loved it, and re-read it 3 times since.

Revealing Background
"Memories of Anne Frank: Reflections of a Childhood Friend" by Alison Leslie Gold, prize-winning author of another book on Anne Frank, tells the story of Anne's childhood friend Hannah Pick-Goslar.The title may be a little deceiving for this book is very much the tale of Hannah's experience during the war as well as her memories of what her friendship with Anne was like.It is a revealing and poignant document that offers further background to the memory of Anne Frank and her enduring legacy.

Hanneli Goslar was the first friend Anne Frank made when her family moved from Germany to Amsterdam, and it was a friendship that Anne wrote about in the diary, with Hanneli's name changed along with the others.Gold begins Hannah's story with her discovery of the Frank's sudden departure from Amsterdam, with flashbacks to their days at school and play.Gold then recounts what the war did to the Goslar family, before and after their time in concentration camps when their number had dwindled down to two.The most poignant episode in the book, besides the losses that Hannah undergoes in her own family, is when she encounters a much altered Anne at Bergen-Belsen and learns what her friend had been through, knowing that there isn't much she can do to help her out.Hannah somehow managed to survive and shared her memories with Gold to help further Anne's legacy, even if her memories are not as sharp as they once were.

"Memories of Anne Frank: Reflections of a Childhood Friend" is a must read for anyone who is curious about Anne's war time experience beyond the diary.It is a children's book, which means that the writing is simplistic, sometimes too simplistic, but Gold is able to augment the horrors of what Hannah saw in the concentration camps without devolving into too much detail.A more grown-up version of Hannah's story can be found in Willy Lindmer's excellent "The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank", but for younger readers, Gold's recounting of Anne's friend Hannah is a very good place to learn more about one of the most well-known victims of the Holocaust.

A tale of survival
This tale of survival of Anne Frank's best friend Hannah Goslar is filled with both hope and tragedy. You really get attached to Hannah as she copes with everything from the loss of friends/relatives, deportation, life in a concentration camp, taking care of her toddler sister Gabi and finally liberation. You get teary eyed towards the end as she talks about her long gone friends and the childhood that was taken away from her as she embarks on a new life.

As this was intended for children the writing style is a little simplistic. Also as this was written by a third person we don't really get to delve into Hannah's feelings and emotions as her life unfolds. There are also some notable inconsistencies to other books and such. I was also disappointed to see the narrative start with Anne's disappearance as I was also interested in Hannah's pre-war life. This however is covered somewhat in the "Last Seven Months of Anne Frank" a book which I also recommend.

To be fair the book is full of flashbacks and leaves no question unaswered. It also introduced me to new facts like the rift that Anne and Hannah felt between them in their final months together, Hanna's boyfriend and Mrs. Goslar's resentment of the Franks disappearance. The book is heart wrenching at times like the time the two girls meet at a fence in Bergen-Belsen which came by pure chance. You're filled with emotion when Anne says "Hanneli? Is it reall you?" and Hannah says "It's me! I'm here."

Overall the book not only fills in some holes but it also brings closure to the Anne Frank story like it should.

Memories of Anne Frank
From reading memories of Anne Frank Reflections of a Childhood Friend i would say it is wonderful! I mean the rough times and the scary times Anne never went down she never made a doubt that she might get hurt or get found in the "Secret Annex". This is where Anne stayed most of the time during the war so no one could find her. The war was a very tough time for Anne and her family. The Annex was a place where Anne could hide and also keep her thoughts. Her diary was the important thing about her. She kept everything in it. When it was near the end of the war one day people in business came to her house and took her diary and she had to make a quick escape. The conflict of this story is that Anne was afraid that she would get caught and get killed at the concentration camp. One day when the people in business came to her house they took her to the concentration camp.While at this dark and dreary place, she was starved, got very sickly and eventually was killed.She was only 15 years old when she died. That is what I thought about the book Memories of Anne Frank.

Memories of Anne Frank: Reflections of a Childhood Friend
Even though Memories of Anne Frank: Reflections of a Childhood Friend was written in the 1990s, it portrays the horrors of the Holocaust as vividly as if Hannah Goslar, Anne's childhood best friend, had been describing her whole story just when she was liberated of Bergen-Belsen almost half a century before, in 1945.

This book is basically a journey through Hannah's life during, before, and even a bit after World War II, taking us to the various concentration camps she was sent to. Probably the most touching scene is when Hannah miraculously finds Anne, a few months before she died, at Bergen-Belsen. Anne had believed Hannah to be long dead, as she once wrote an entry in her diary stating that she felt tremendously guilty for Hannah's suffering. Ironically, it turned out to be the other way around, and Anne was the one to die instead.

I found it incredibly hard not to let go off a few tears when I read about the deaths of Hannah's loved ones, one by one. Each was as sad as the previous one, and I cannot immagine how Hannah found the strength to survive and ultimately to go on with her life in those harsh circumstances. Undoubtedly, that took real courage.

I believe Alison Gold did a pretty good job in telling the world Hannah's story, even though at times, I did not quite like her writing style because I found it too simple, which is just misleading, because this book is not a light read at all. Other than that, I found her descriptions to be good but thankfully not too graphic.

I really enjoyed Hannah's personal photographs at the middle of the book. I felt like each and every single one of them was telling me a whole new story, and it was disturbing to know how many people pictured did not manage to survive this whole atrocity.

If you're interested in learning more about Anne Frank, beyond her diary and what happened after that, this book is a wonderful addition to Anne Frank fans, but it also introduces us to a new person not many people are familiar with: Hannah. I truly believe that she was no less than a hero herself. She suffered as much as any other Holocaust victim did and lost as much as any other Holocaust victim did. Meip Gies: An Amazing Story
Meip Gies tells her life story which would make a more compelling movie than the Anne Frank story.She gives her eyewitness account of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, and of the Dutch Resistance.Her work to save Otto Frank's family was only part of the story.Meip was actually born in Austria, and had to figure out how to get around the Nazi's efforts to deport her. She got her name on a black list for refusing to join a Nazi group for Young Women.She alone is responsible for saving Anne Frank's diary manuscript.

The definition of quiet strength
The late Miep Gies was more than a courageous hero when she agreed to help the Frank family hide in the attic of Mr. Frank's business. She ran a great risk of deportation and/or death by helping them, but she never questioned doing the right thing for a second. Although Anne's name is in the title, the memoir is more about Miep's story and fills in some of the blanks from the girl's iconic diary.

Born in early 1900s Vienna, little Miep was sent to live with a foster family in Holland because of the local food shortages caused by the First World War. She came to love her foster family and considered herself a proud Dutch citizen. By her early 20s, she worked as a secretary for Otto Frank's spice business Opekta. The small staff (including Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleiman, and Bep Voskuijl) viewed each other as family with Otto representing their father.

The rise of Hitler and increasing anti-Semitism that followed sparked the idea for the Frank family to go into hiding. With the help of Miep, her husband Jan, and the other employees, the Frank and Van Pels family along with local dentist Fritz Pfeffer were kept safe in the attic for about 2 years until their fateful capture. Miep's description of that day is equally heart wrenching and suspenseful.

Anne and the other attic members are metioned several times, but Miep's story gives voice to the helpers. The fear and anxiety of keeping everyone safe. Making sure you can feed everyone despite the dwindling numbers of ration cards and widespread starvation. The many close calls that could've ended in capture. Anne's story will live on forever, but let us not forget about the woman who tried her best to keep her safe and saved her diary so that generations will never forget. Miep, you were a hero and then some.

Remarkable lady, remarkable book
I had the pleasure of meeting Miep Gies in person when she came to Long Island in 1995.I brought my then 11-yr son to hear her story.I said to him "that is the face of courage."He was so inspired - when we got home, he wrote a poem about Anne Frank that night.A diminutive lady, Miep Gies spoke with a broken English.We listened to her amazing story, told in a matter-of-fact way. (As I found out later, this was very much her character - she's very non pretentious!)She wrote this book (along with Alison Leslie Gold) in the same manner.It started out with:"I am not a hero.I stand at the end of the long, long line of good Dutch people who did what I did or more..." The book was written without any malice- just a straightforward account of what she went through in that dark, dark period of mankind.It is very easy to read and, surprisingly, not depressing as one would expect.Highly recommended for people of any age.

Miep Gies passed away on January 11, 2010.She was 100 years old.This remarkable lady encompassed what human spirit was all about.

The world has lost a special light this week with the loss of Mrs. Gies.As was just reported, she passed away this Monday at the age of 100 leaving behind her a legacy of bravery, compassion and gumption.Though by her own account, she was not a hero, every word written in her memoir exudes the very definition of the word.

She, together with her late husband and Mr. Frank's former employees, helped to hide two families from the Nazis during two years.Even in her own home, she and her husband hid yet another innocent victim from the Nazis, risking her life for the greater good.To very end of her days, she commemorated August 4th (the day of the raid) with silence and private mourning.

This excellent memoir stands as a testament to the life of a hero. Thank you for the quality of mercy that you showed the world.

This book was a great compainion to the Anne Frank Diary.You get the outside view of the Annex.I have always been very interested in Miep Gies and the other helpers views and takes on the situation. This book told me exactly that.

Most influential book in my life
This is the most influential book in my life. I am deeply touched by the talent of Anne. You couldn't guess that this diary was writen by a 13 years old girl. The life in the annex was well illustrated. Anne's mind is opened before us by this great diary. However, you couldn't say that this was not writen by a 13 years old girl. The thoughts are what a teenage girls should have. But, very little teenage or even adult can describ his/her feeling and thoughts in such detail. I feel deeply sorry for Anne's suffering. Diary of Ann Frank
A wonderful book for a child age 8 which discusses a difficult topic.Gives enough information with out going overboard.My daughter was very interested, and it brought up some good discussions.

An excellent book about a critical story that all should know well
"The Diary of Anne Frank" was required reading when I was in middle school and rightfully so. It is a story that all children should be aware of so that they learn of the terrible events of World War II. Furthermore, since those that deny the Holocaust always seem to have a life beyond their version of reality such knowledge will hopefully reduce their numbers.
This book is written at the level of the early elementary school years when children have reached the point where they can read alone. In that sense the author has hit the mark and explains the circumstances in a manner well within the reach of the target audience. It is an excellent book that would be a solid addition to any elementary school library or reading program.
