3-0 out of 5 stars review of geology book
Book was marked in 'Good' condition. It was very highlighted, and I was pretty disappointed when I first received it. Nonetheless, I have gotten used to the marks and don't really mind them anymore.

3-0 out of 5 stars good book, bad support
Great book . Unfortunately, the CD rom is for windows 2000, and not upgradable to XP , let alone 7. Wiley seems to have little interest in helping. A little support would be appreciated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, if Pricy, Textbook
This book is one of the standard university texts in physical geology, along with Understanding Earth by Frank Press et al. The book is well written and very well illustrated. The discription ofplate tectonics and it's integration throughout the book is very well done. Like most such texts, it has the disadvantage of being written by lifelong academics with little or no contact with the extraxtive industries. Their treatment of energy extraction is superficial at best. One of the most important developments in geology over the past 30 years, that of sequence stratigraphy, does not even get a mention, perhaps because it came out of the oil exploration industry. (Understanding Earth does devote a paragraph or two to sequence stratigraphy.)

I confess that I did not buy a copy from Amazon. I picked mine up at a Border's Bookstore in London. The only difference in my copy and one bought in the US is a large graphic on the cover saying "Restricted: not for sale in North America". Why the restriction? Like many university textbooks, this one can be bought in overseas at a fraction of the US price. My undiscounted Border's London price was $59.19, a little more than half the US price. Quite remarkable, considering the current weakness of the US dollar to the UK pound.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very dynamic earth
Skinner, Porter and Park give you a richly illustrated introduction to geology. The text spans the breadth of modern geology, and shows an exciting and changing planet. There are numerous photos of examples of terrain, often accompanied by schematics to aid understanding. The latest techniques practised in geology are explained. Especially noteworthy is the extensive use of GPS. This has greatly aided recording the location of interesting geological samples.

Earthquakes are also well covered, and will probably be of interest to many readers, especially if you are in California. The history of the Richter and Mercalli scales is gone into. Unfortunately, predicting quakes is still very uncertain!

The discussion on earthquakes is also used as a good example of plate tectonics, where the latter is probably the central idea of geology.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Physical Geology Textbook & Reference Source
This book is for all persons, students and others, who wish to learn geology with over 500 easy-to-read pages. The Earth is a giant machine, a machine that never stops. How the Earth-machine works is the story told in this book, and it is a fascinating story. The science that studies the Earth is geology, and those involved in the study are geologists. Physical processes are shaping the Earth now and have been shaping the Earth over the past 4.5 billion years. ... Read more

Excerpt: Stephen Edwin King (born September 21, 1947) is an American author of contemporary horror, suspense, science fiction and fantasy fiction. More than 350 million copies of King's novels and short story collections have been sold, and many of his stories have been adapted for film, television, and other media. King has written a number of books using the pen name Richard Bachman, and one short story, "The Fifth Quarter", as John Swithen. In 2003, the National Book Foundation awarded King the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. King was born in Portland, Maine, the son of Nellie Ruth (née Pillsbury) and Donald Edwin King. When King was two years old, his father, who was a merchant seaman, left the family under the pretense of "going to buy a pack of cigarettes," leaving his mother to raise King and his adopted older brother David by herself, sometimes under great financial strain. The family moved to De Pere, Wisconsin; Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Stratford, Connecticut. When King was eleven years old, the family returned to Durham, Maine, where Ruth King cared for her parents until their deaths. She then became a caregiver in a local residential facility for the mentally challenged. As a child, King apparently witnessed one of his friends being struck and killed by a train, though he has no...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=26954 ... Read more

Product Description
Editorial ReviewsFrom Publishers WeeklyIn Freeman's chilling, atmospheric latest, Jonathan Stride returns from a Las Vegas stint (in Stripped) to head the major crimes detective bureau of his former Duluth, Minn., department. When the husband of Maggie Bei, Stride's former detective partner, is murdered, Maggie becomes the prime suspect, and Stride determines to clear her. Meanwhile, Dan Erickson, an ambitious Duluth county attorney, hires Stride's lover, PI Serena Dial (who returned with Stride from Vegas), to pay off a blackmailer. Freeman slowly weaves the cases together into a labyrinthine search for a serial killer. Following the anonymous predator as well as the cops, the reader is teased by the fiend's identity and hidden motives. The stalwart, intuitive Stride digs into the case's disparate elements, including the city's sexual underworld, and a terrified Serena runs into serious trouble. A strong narrative crammed with twists and studded with sex and violence; a mysterious, even mystical, sense of place; and a well-crafted set of characters and relationships make this one of Freeman's stronger crime thrillers. 4-0 out of 5 stars fine horror collection
This twenty-four story horror collection features tales written in 2003 that first appear in this book though some of the better contributions will have probably reappeared elsewhere since. The tales as in the first collection, SHIVERS, run the gamut of horror from the supernatural to the psychological to the suspense and include several of the who's who of the genre who also contributed to the 2002 edition like Douglas Clegg, Bentley Little, and Graham Masterson. No tale is bad with a few extraordinary especially the dark comedy "Fine Until You Called," by Thomas Tessier that will resonate with readers long after finishing the book.On the other hand one wonders why Kelly Laymon's "Living in the Cemetery, Dancing the Dance" was included as that is an amusing Q & A log of working at the CD magazine.Overall this is a solid enetertaining anthology that horror fans who appreciate variations in their sub-genre will want to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars You can find this information elsewhere for free
I believe this is now outdated. I'm a bit surprised I actually bought this report. How to market your MP3 now? MySpace!

5-0 out of 5 stars As a promoter
I have been promoting a few musicians as part of artist "street teams", and this book was able to let me shine!

The ideas are perfect for ANYONE in ANY PART of promotion to use. While I understand the book would me geared towards musicians, this is a great read for anyone that wants to help out a struggling musician, or make a career out of promoting them.

This should be a must read for all new artists. The book is laid out simple enough for anyone to read, but goes way beyond the basics to give you an overall understanding of the industry.

Great buy, especially for the price!

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Edited and Nothing New
It looks like the publisher has a whole series of "Buzz Your..." titles, and it looks like minimal effort was put into customizing the content of this book for the promotion of digital music.Although there's a bit of general commonsense advice, this book is really just an ad for the buzzyour.com website.

It's so poorly edited there are spelling errors, despite the authors admonition to spell-check every document you produce while promoting your product. There are even contradictory statements within one page!E.g., on the top of p. 22 he states "Fliers work, and they're economical."Later on the same page, he says, "...pass out free tapes or CDs... This works better than flyers, which most people will throw away or ignore."(Yes, he spelled it both "flier" and "flyer".)

Save your $9 and find another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was Very Happy with this but...
I was Very Happy with this but I wish it was available in print form of some kind. It's a small book, but I'd perfer to hold it in my hands.

That said, my band doubled the sales of our CD at our gigs within a month of using some of the tactics in this guide. And a lot more people have been showing up at the shows, which has led to bigger shows in other towns.

I actually see the small size of this guide to be a plus -- none of the BS that you find in 200 or 500 page books that cost ten times as much!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Hype about Hype
Clearly, the Buzz Your MP3 "street team" is writing glowing online reviews to help buzz this book.

No secrets or insider tips here, just a hackneyed combination of obvious ideas (i.e. make a website with press clips and gigs), and hare-brained schemes (start an "e-mail tag" where you send an mp3 to someone and get them to send it to 5 more people).

The pervasive marketing jargon is almost stomach turning, and equally upsetting is the author's use of the word "sincere" (as in, "make sure your e-mail to blah blah reviewer is sincere") to mean "sincere-sounding".Obviously, when you are promoting your music, everything you do has a degree of insincerity in it. Better to come to terms with that. ... Read more
