Matt offers his only book as thanks, butthe old man instead asks Matt to teach his grandson Attean to read. Bothboys are suspicious, but Attean comes each day for his lesson. The book was not that great. It was not well written. If you do not have to DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. The movie was terrible. horrible book

5-0 out of 5 stars Sign of the Beaver - The best book ever!
Sign of the Beaver is one of our favorite books that we read in our third grade reading group. It was very exciting, emotional, and fun! It is about a boy named Matt and his father, and his father went to get his sister and mother and the new baby. It is really interesting because Matt meets an Indian boy named Attean and they make bows and snares, and they encounter a bear. We would recommend this book for other schools and young people who like adventure books. Sign of the Beaver is great, and we suggest you read it!

3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars - Teaches Some Difficult Concepts But...
"The Sign of the Beaver" is a book that my children and I enjoyed; they are boy and girl, 8 and 10.

The story is about a boy named Matt whose family is moving to the 'wilds' of colonial Maine. His dad and he have gone out ahead of the rest of the family to prepare a clearing, plant some crops and build a small cabin. Matt's dad then leaves him behind while he returns to Connecticut to retrieve the rest of the family which includes his wife, the baby they are expecting, and his daughter. While Matt's alone, he has a few life defining experiences; amongst them an encounter with a trapper who steals from him, and a tribe of nearby Indians. In particularly, he struggles to have a relationship with a Native American boy named Attean, who is a couple of years his senior.

TALKING POINTS:::
The book is an award winning chapter read that is written at nearly the 5th Grade level (AR 4.9)

I thought the value of the book was that it directly addressed the 'myth of white guy superiority'. Speare used both examples from DeFoe's "Robinson Crusoe" and some of the adventures of the boys to demonstrate how ridiculous it is to assume that newcomers would understand an environment better than the natives who grew up with it. In DeFoe's case, she ridicules his precepts and roundly shows how the man's prejudice was hurtful.

The other concept I like was that the book tried to show children that most of the time it is individuals who can behave badly, and not groups.Although it could be argued that by making it clear that the Europeans were 'grabbing up' the land without consideration of the people who already live there, that they were in fact behaving badly as a group.

All this said, I think the pacing suffered on account of the complexity of the ideas that the author was trying to get across. And certainly her choice of grammar made the book, in my experience, an exceedingly difficult read-aloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Amazon purchase
I had to purchase this book for my son for school. The whole process went smoothly and I was delighted in the condition that the book was in when I received it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great book for Guys
I bought this audiobook for my son to listen to in the car on a long trip. The first thing I will say is actually a negative, that the reader was just a bit annoying, and the accent he used for the characters was off.(It's a story about Maine, why are you using a cheezy generic country accent?)Apart from that though, and regarding the actual content of the story, we really enjoyed it.It's a great story about growing up, friendship, respect and learning responsibility and self-reliance.I think especially for boys, the parts about how Matt and Attean fished, made bows and arrows, etc. are intriguing. We listened to this twice on our trip, and since we got home my son has also been listening to it on his CD player at bedtime, so I would have to say it is a hit with him (I think 8 years olds are maybe not as sensitive to cheezy, misplaced accents as other people might be.)I would definitely say this CD is worth the money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Women's Small Groups
As a women's small group leader, I love E George's study guides. They combine the benefits of a true Bible Study with the application of a women's concept study.Too bad she doesn't have guides on ALL of the books of the Bible!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for group or individual Bible study
I recently led a women's Bible study on James using this book and it was very well received. The content does not dig deep into theology, but is a very basic study on the book of James with excellent application of his teaching into your own personal life.We easily covered about four chapters each week.It does not have daily lessons, so it is up to the individual to set his or her own pace.It is written for women, but men could also benefit from this study. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books available
I am just over halfway through this book, but maybe because I've recently read some EXCELLENT books on the same topic, George's just isn't doing it for me. I agree with the reviewer who thought her "advice" to not talk for a whole day was a bit (or rather, a LOT) off the mark. My husband happens to enjoy talking with me, and I with him. Some of her principles are okay, but they are mostly the ones that seem common sense. Some, like the not talking suggestion, are just a little too out there for me. While I do agree that God intended my husband to be the spiritual leader in our home, I do not believe that he is to be my master or my "lord". The new testament is very clear on submission, and states that it (submission) is to come from BOTH spouses! My other issue is her writing style. Dear friend, precious reader...ick. Talk (write) to me as though I am an adult, not a 5 year old!

I suggest Becoming the Woman of His Dreams, by Sharon Jaynes, and also Every Woman's Battle, by Shannon Ethridge. They are both excellent resources on this topic!

1-0 out of 5 stars Gives A Totally Inaccurate Picture of Marriage
If you don't look at anything else, you might think this study is O.K.In MANY respects, it isn't biblical at all, because George twists the Word of God to fit her preconceived ideas. Please don't waste your time with it.Pick up "Enhancing Your Marriage" by Judy Rossi.I'll talk more about that later.Elizabeth George paints a very negative picture of women, not as the beautiful counterpart to men, created in the image of God.You get beat over the head with submission and the "helper" theology. But George doesn't bother to mention that the same "help meet" word that is used for a woman, is also used to describe God (see PS 46:1). George makes you look up 4 verses on the contentious wife, but leaves any positive image out of that section, which is supposed to talk about the effect a wife's words can have on her husband. In Little Things that Make a Big Difference, George recommends "so aim for at least 5 minutes a day of Bible reading", and then turns around and says "Now can't you scrape up 15 minutes today . . . and every day?" regarding reading a Christian book on ANY topic. What kind of recommendations are those?Aren't they a little mixed up.I also have a huge problem with recommending reading just any Christian book. There is so much out there that isn't fit for print, let alone reading.George's "recipe" for good communication (in an effort to make everything begin with the same letter) says that your speech should be soft, sweet, suitable, scant, and slow. She never brings up the verse on only saying what will build up.She built her own little doctrine out of a few verses, while completely ignoring why God made women as they are.She doesn't discuss the strengths we bring to a marriage by our ability to put things into words, she simply tells us to be quiet most of the time, make an appt to talk with our husbands, and write things down before you say them so you get it right.Does she consider us all to be so dimwitted? The "slow" comes from be "slow to speak" which means to ponder or think out what you want to say before you say it.That's Biblical, but George's take simply isn't.DO NOT get me wrong in this review.I am not disagreeing with George regarding submission to your spouse.George doesn't present an accurate biblical view of the relationship a husband and a wife have under God.Using this book is driving me much further away from wanting to do anything for my spouse. On the other hand, if you pick up Rossi's study mentioned earlier. She heavily emphasizes our beautiful relationship with our Creator first, and everything centers around that as she writes the rest of the study. She articulates the physical differences between men and women's brains that can be celebrated and respected in the area of communication. She points everything back to the Father and the Holy Spirit who must illuminate the areas of our hearts that need to change. Her book motivates me to want to be a true woman of God and a better wife. These books are like night and day.Don't get lost in the dark with Elizabeth George.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read "Power of a Praying Wife" instead
I have read a few books on being the wife God intended me to be.I haven't regreted it for a second either. The problem with this book was I read it after reading "The Power of a Praying Wife" so it was a let down after such a great book.Don't get me wrong, this is a good book but I like the way the other author states things better.Just an opinion. If you have read the other book I mentioned then you really don't need to go through this one too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
This book is exactly what I needed.I suggest that every new wife and seasoned vets should read this book if you are trying to become a Christian Wife. This book has taught me alot about God, myself and my marriage.I truly recommended this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I love Elizabeth George but this was my least favorite.I found A Woman After God's Own Heart and A Mother After God's Own Heart much more in depth. There is some overlap in A Woman After God's Own Heart. However, it is still a great read with really great information. ... Read more

Product Description
When Eugenie Davies is killed by a driver on a quiet London street, her death is clearly no accident. Someone struck her with a car and then deliberately ran over her body before driving off, leaving nothing behind but questions.

What brought Eugenie Davies to London on a rainy autumn night? Why was she carrying the name of the man who found her body? Who among the many acquaintances in her complicated and tragic life could have wanted her dead? And could her murder have some connection to a twenty-eight-year-old musical wunderkind, a virtuoso violinist who several months earlier suddenly and inexplicably lost the ability to play a single note?

For Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, whose own domestic life is about to change radically, these questions are only the first in an investigation that leads him to walk a fine line between personal loyalty and professional honor.

Assigned to the case by his superior, Superintendent Malcolm Webberly, Lynley learns that Webberly's first murder investigation as a DI over twenty years ago involved Eugenie Davies and a sensational criminal trial. Yet what is truly damaging is what Webberly already knows and no doubt wants Lynley to keep concealed.

Now the pressure is on Lynley to find Eugenie Davies' killer. For not only is he putting his own career into jeopardy, but he is also attempting to safeguard the careers of his longtime partners Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata. Together, they must untangle the dark secrets and darker passions of a family whose history conceals the truth behind a horrific crime.

From the Hardcover edition.Amazon.com Review
Families can be monstrous and their secrets dangerous, as New Scotland Yard detectives Thomas Lynleyand Barbara Havers have discovered. The pair are puzzled that theHampstead police need their help investigating the vehicular murder of amiddle-aged divorcée, until they find evidence that one of their ownsuperiors once knew the dead lady very well indeed. But the circumstancesof Eugenie Davies's murder appear to center on her children: Gideon, afamous violinist now undergoing psychoanalysis for his sudden inability toplay, and the long-dead Sonia, a disabled baby whose drowning death wasshrouded in secrecy for her virtuoso brother's sake--at the insistence oftheir father, Richard--but also trumpeted in the press as the infamous"nanny murder" of its day. The nanny, Katja Wolff, has recently beenreleased from prison, having never spoken of the night Sonia drowned.Lynley, Havers, and their colleague Winston Nkata know that whatever secretKatja Wolff has been hiding must be the cause of Eugenie Davies's death, but before they can find out what it is, another deliberate hit-and-runoccurs in their own backyard.

The suspects are many: Wolff; Eugenie's most recent suitor; her ne'er-do-well brother; Gideon's longtime mentor, who kept in contact withEugenie in the years after she abandoned her husband and son; and agentleman of many monikers who boarded with the family at the time of thedrowning. Even Richard Davies, the dead woman's ex-husband, is undersuspicion. But it's violinist Gideon Davies's quest into his family's past, undertaken to save his career, that sets the book's events in motion. Hisown telling of the story runs parallel to the author's own voice but istime-shifted. Along with the details of the police investigation, thispaints a disturbing picture of what happens when the truth is obscured anda child's normal instincts sublimated.

A Traitor to Memory is massive, and it's hard not to spot afew flaws in a plot so complex. The dual narratives force abnormally slowreading, the motive for one murder and two near-murders is inexplicablyglossed over, and many doughty Lynley/Havers fans will still wonder by theend what exactly happened in Sonia's bathroom. Yet Elizabeth Georgeorchestrates the family-secrets theme like a maestro, and at least one ofthe second-chair players--such as Katja Wolff's beautiful, scarred loverYasmine Edwards--may be a rising star in the series. George's fans will nodoubt find this 11th entry in the series worthy of astanding ovation. --Barrie Trinkle ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Rush Job, but Slow Read
Elizabeth George's A TRAITOR TO MEMORY needs an editor with a strong finger on the delete key. The book is much too long and plodding for the material. For a fan of the series it is a must-read, but allow yourself plenty of time because the pace of this title is plodding at best.
Everyone gets a view of the life of Lynley and his wife Helen, while Havers is down played in this volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Very Good Story. One Very Long Book
Elizabeth George is one of those talented writers who can fully develop her characters & build a story around them. The three central characters of the Davies family have been developed beautifully.
I can't remember when I've seen so many dysfunctional characters in a book. Yes, even the coppers. But, that's what gives the novel it's draw for the reader. It's very long & at times very drawn out; at times repetitive.
Some have mentioned there are many loose ends. There are some. Ms. George covers some in subsequent novels. Others are basically superfluous.
Reading this novel will require attention. It's dense & very detailed. I found the book's ending very good. If you miss certain details in the book, the ending can become only mediocre or disappointing.
This novel is for those who want to really sink their teeth into a suspense story.

I've found it amazing how a woman from California can write British mystery novels. But, Ms. George does it oh, so well

3-0 out of 5 stars Good writing but slow and painful story
This is my first book by Elizabeth George. The sheer size made it a daunting task to finish. The language flows smoothly. I could turn page after page with no problem. Some chapters are written in first person singular (I) while others are from the point of view of different characters.
Let me try to remember how many characters are there. Gideon, Pitchford (who has changed his name twice before), Katja, Sarah Jane, Eugenie, Richard, Jill, Webberly, Libby, Lynly, Yasmin, McKay, another attorney (I just completed the book and I don't rememberfew names), Malcolm, Frances, Winston Nkata, Cecilia, Katie Waddington, a prison guard, Hillier, Deborah, Helen. If the character doesn't hang around in my mind the characterization is poor. While Gideon's character was interesting to begin with I got bored by his self-centeredness and ranting. All the time he seems to confront his father Richard `you lied to me,' and `I knew it' - page after page.
Some chapters are written from the point of view of minor characters. Like in one chapter there is a whole back story of Pitchford and in another that of Winston Nkata. The point of view changes too often and few times I had to go back to realize `who is thinking this?'
It was confused how characters change from being heterosexual to homosexual. For, Katja Wolfe obviously had sex with a man to give birth to a son and then she is shown to be lesbian. Yasmin was married to a man and has a son but now she is lesbian.
I was also upset because I didn't see the point of showing another deformed child - Victoria. To me, it achieved nothing.
Usually when I read a murder mystery I start guessing who could be the murderer. In this novel I didn't even try because I didn't care who the murderer was. I always wondered why the victim of a hit and run invariably runs in front of the car, rather than running sideways. Richard being pushed in front of a bus and having minor fracture didn't sound authentic.Who can take the risk of falling in front of a bus in a calculated way that one can only get a minor fracture.
Demanding money to admit murder and go to prison for twenty years? It didn't convince me. It is human to value freedom more than a paid jail sentence.
In short, too many characters and they have long back stories. New characters emerge up to the end of the novel (Noreen McKay). The time frame during which all events occur is confusing. I had some sympathy for Libby's character but disliked all others.Since there are characters who has no connection to the main plot the story gets diluted. There are loose ends left. The end didn't impress me.
About the craft, I already mentioned the change of point of view not only in a scene but even in a single paragraph. She uses adverbs and dilutes the strength of the prose. She also uses verb qualifiers (Richard said heavily, Richard countered, Jill pleaded). The book also has long paragraphs in dialogs, some more than half a page. I also noticed two exclamation marks.
Since I had great expectations from Elizabeth George because I had heard so much about this great writer, at the end of the book I had disappointment.
To her credit though, there are some great sentences and paragraphs and beats in the dialogue. And above all I could finish the book of over a thousand pages. And I give her credit for that.
I don't think this book has ever been edited.
Will I read any of her books again? Yes, I'll give her one more chance because her language flows smoothly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Whew! done at last
I love E.G. but this one is way too long, confusing with the diary entries, too many loose ends left hanging and just plain boring in parts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series
"A Traitor to Memory" is another thick satisfying book by Elizabeth George. As with most of George's novels, the point of view shifts from character to character --each character very well drawn.Because we were seeing the action from the points of view of several characters, I was able to figure out who committed the murders before the end of the book, but, as with her other novels, the characters held my attention until the end.If you care a lot about Inspector Lynley,Barbara Havers, and Winston Nkata (the series detectives), you may be disappointed. They are far less prominent than in previous novels. This is very much NOT a police procedural.

Gideon's sessions with his psychiatrist figure greatly.Gideon, who had been a child prodigy violinist, has suddenly lost the whole musical side of his being and is being treated by Dr. Rose.Gideon's highly dysfunctional family is gradually revealed through these sessions.

I wasn't very happy with the ending, but it certainly was absolutely in character.I downgraded the book from 5 stars to 4 simply because I like the series detectives best, and they were not prominent enough. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, may take parent review
I bought this book for my nine year old daughter to help encourage her with daily devotional time.I read through the book first as this was my first time giving my daughter a "study guide" and I wanted to make sure the information was "my daughter" appropriate. While the book is well written, easy to read, interesting, etc.I did have a few concerns with some of the situations presented. The author does a great job of bringing the reader back to what God says about a subject. She uses a fictional character "Emma" to talk about what is going on "her" life and then what she should/does do etc.My only problem was that some of the situations weren't appropriate for my daughter. One of them was about honoring parents and it mentioned that "Emma's" friends had called their parents things like lame, old fashioned, etc.Silly as it sounds, I didn't want to put those ideas in my daughters head. The chapter clearly pointed readers towards honoring their parents, but I just didn't like the example given.Another one was hanging out with the "cool kids".My daughter has yet to make a big distinction between cool kids and non cool kids. The book gave a situation where the character had to make a choice to either go with the cool kids or hang out with her regular friends.I just didn't like that either. Also, the word "tween" is often used.I cannot stand this tween identity that the media is giving kids and was dissapointed to see it used here.A good book overall, just some minor irritations that I whited out and wrote over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can be a useful step on the way to growing maturity for an adolescent, Christian girl
"A Girl After God's Own Heart" is a tween girl's workbook about how to define herself more clearly through her relationship with God, and Jesus. It is a fun workbook with exercises that will help in a search for growth, in wisdom, maturity, love, grace, and joy. "A Girl After God's Heart" has fun activities, meditations, and exercises, plus prayers and special moments to treasure the gift of life from God. "A Girl After God's Own Heart" is the perfect core book for a tween girls' Christian group curriculum. It offers bits of scripture, quotations and ideas for how to integrate love for Jesus and God into daily life activities and concerns, even problems. Having this book will help a young girl learn that spending time examining what it means to be in a relationship with Jesus is very valuable. It will also provide help in learning to distinguish between true caring friendship and the reverse. "A Girl After God's Own Heart" can be a useful step on the way to growing maturity for an adolescent, Christian girl.

Product Description
In the year 1754, the stillness of Charlestown, New Hampshire, is shattered by the terrifying cries of an Indian raid. Young Miriam Willard, on a day that had promised new happiness, finds herself instead a captive on a forest trail, caught up in the ebb and flow of the French and Indian War.
It is a harrowing march north. Miriam can only force herself to the next stopping place, the next small portion of food, the next icy stream to be crossed. At the end of the trail waits a life of hard work and, perhaps, even a life of slavery. Mingled with her thoughts of Phineas Whitney, her sweetheart on his way to Harvard, is the crying of her sister"s baby, Captive, born on the trail.
Miriam and her companions finally reach Montreal, a city of shifting loyalties filled with the intrigue of war, and here, by a sudden twist of fortune, Miriam meets the prominent Du Quesne family, who introduce her to a life she has never imagined. Based on an actual narrative diary published in 1807, Calico Captive skillfully reenacts an absorbing facet of history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars historical fiction from an era you don't usually hear about
While most people know this author best for her book The Witch of Blackbird Pond, I've always liked this one of hers best. Based on the true story of English settlers captured by the Abenakis and sold to the French as prisoners of war, it is told from the perspective of Miriam, a young woman who is a little too spunky for her own good, as she learns how best to survive as both a prisoner and a foreign seamstress in Montreal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Angieville: CALICO CAPTIVE
All right. We're stretching back a ways this time around and featuring a book written by a very well-known author but oft overlooked in favor of its famous big sib. I know there are plenty of you The Witch of Blackbird Pond fans out there. I am one of you. How could you not love wonderful, brash Kit Tyler? And Hannah and Nat and Mercy? I loved it back when I was a little girl and my mom read it to me and I love it now when I re-read it for myself. In fact, after I finished it the first time, I immediately ran out to find what else Elizabeth George Speare had written and the first one I came across was CALICO CAPTIVE. I immediately liked the cover and the bright yellow spine. I read the back (back when I used to engage in that dangerous activity) and hoped that this Miriam would be as endearing and interesting as Kit. Her adventures seemed to be even more wild and that gave me an additional dose of hope. I'm always in favor of a good swashbuckle or two. I own the above middle copy and I actually think it represents the story quite well, early nineties styling and all. In many ways, CALICO CAPTIVE echoes the richness and beauty of The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and at the same time it is quite a different story. First published back in 1957, CALICO CAPTIVE is based on a true story and was actually Speare's first novel. At times it is even more fraught with danger and the two heroines are very different girls, in search of awfully different things in life. Once again, however, Speare just hits it out of the park when it comes to the atmosphere of the times and her portrayal of women and the lives they led.

Sixteen-year-old Miriam Willard lives with her family in the New Hampshire colony. And on the night in 1754 in which our story begins, she is experiencing her first real party. The soldiers from the nearby fort have come out for the occasion and everywhere there are candles and music and dancing. It proves to be everything she hoped it would be down to the lingering conversation at the end with quiet and handsome Phineas Whitney. Phineas is off to Harvard within a couple of weeks to study medicine and, with the French and Indian war still raging, he is not sure when he will see Miriam again. They would both very much like to continue their acquaintance and Miriam sends him off that night with high hopes they will get to know each other better over the next few weeks. Then, disaster strikes. In the middle of the night their homestead is attacked by Indians bent on capturing the family and marching them all the way to Montreal to be sold into slavery. The journey is harsh and dangerous and Miriam is terrified for herself and for her sister and her young children who are forced to make the march together. Separated in Montreal, Miriam fear she will never see her family again. Sold to an opulent and well-to-do French Canadien family, Miriam's life takes a bizarre and jarring twist as she serves as a ladies maid to the Du Quesne family. There she encounters a level of refinement and lust for life that she has never before fathomed. She also meets the coureur du bois Pierre Laroche and with such an acquaintance, it seems that many more cords slip around her, tying her to solitude and this strange land.

Miriam is a survivor and that is what I like best about her. She never gives up on her family--her sister, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews. She is many times overwhelmed, threatened, angry, and frightened. Yet she never gives in to despair or hatred. I loved her time in Montreal because she was able to embrace the new culture, despite her appalling situation. She made friends with her captors and employers and she saw a different view of the world. I had no idea which way the wind would blow for Miriam in the end and, though I appreciated the fine attributes of both faraway Phineas and very-much-in-the-flesh Pierre, I was pleased with the denouement and the decisions borne of hope that Miriam made in the end. Ms. Speare excels at presenting both sides of every story, at showing every group from the Indians to the French nobility, to the stiff Puritan stock of New Hampshire, in both light and shadow so that the reader gets a feel for just why these wildly diverse groups were fighting. Through Miriam's eyes we are allowed to experience the world at that wild and significant point in time and I have never forgotten what I saw the first time I read it. The harsh reality of her place in the world and the grim and often unbearable truth of those around her haunt Miriam throughout the novel. She does not forget easily, yet she is also one of the only characters to push back against the dizzying tide. By the end, I believed she could do what she said she would because I had watched her adapt time and time again. A truly fascinating read and definitely recommended for Speare fans, as well as those interested in captivity narratives or the early days of North American settlement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok but not my favorite
I was a huge fan of "witch of blackbird pond" so I decided to read this book, too. I was a little disappointed because I am an American history nerd and this one was all about Montreal. The book was well written but as a mom, the story was a little too heartbreaking for me to bear and even harder to know the book was based on a true story. If you don't mind the French setting and you liked her other book, you'll probably like this one, too. But if you prefer American themed novels, pick up something by Ann Rinaldi.

5-0 out of 5 stars another Speare masterpiece
The book is amazing.I am a former middle school English teacher.I used Speare's books in my classes b/c of their great plots and character development. Now I have a daugter in middle school. She reads my books I used with my students and especially loves the books by Speare. For her birthday, I looked for a new book for her.I purchased Calico Captive and read it before I gave it to her!I loved it and she did too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for struggling "sheep".
Elizabeth George has once again written a challenging, thought-provoking, and encouraging book. She guides the reader verse by verse through one of the most familiar passages in all of scripture. She brings life and understanding the the words of David and helps you to understand the significance of the shepherd metaphor. When I read this book I was struggling with God's call for our family to serve in a ministry with very little pay.By looking at the 23rd Psalm, I came to realize that the Lord would provide all that my family needed and that he would give us protection and grace to face the days ahead. What a joy to have that burden lifted and to fully trust in the Lord.I strongly recommend this book to anyone who desires to be lead by the Good Shepherd.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I've been reading George's Inspector Lynley novels, in order, and this is the only one that's disappointed me somewhat. It was overly long and it definitely dragged, which is surprising given that these are usually major page-turners.I think she tried a new technique with this one, using flashbacks and playing with time and memory. It's an interesting approach but it made the novel feel slightly disjointed.Furthermore, I found the characters hard to warm up to, especially Gideon and Libby, two of the major characters in the plot.I think she gives Gideon's self-analyzing psychological journey too much time at the expense of Lynley and Havers, and the way he speaks and thinks is hard to imagine coming from a real person or social dynamic.I got so annoyed by Gideon's pompous discussions with his doctor that I really couldn't enjoy the plot itself that much. And finally, I think the plot is a real stretch, and is never fully explained.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite by George
I have read all of Elizabeth George's books and I love them. "A Traitor to Memory", however, is my absolute favorite. It tells a story of an artist who has amnesia and is forced to piece together the events of his early life from shreds of memories.

A beautiful addition to the Inspector Lynley series, this book is very long but each page is a feast to read. Don't pass it by! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable women - Unremarkable Book
What am I doing writing a review of a book by Elizabeth George? I was preaching on some of the women in the Bible and came across her book--honest! Since so many people--I mean female Christians--seem to be reading her I thought she might have something worth saying on some of the characters I was looking at. I was sadly mistaken! Apart from her saccharine "Dear friend" and "Precious ladies" approach which grates on the ear, there are several other problems which, if she writes in a similar vein in her other books, are worth noting.

Let me say from the outset that there probably wasn't anything unbiblical in most of what Elizabeth George said. On the other hand, much of what she said was utterly unrooted in the characters she was looking at. It seemed as if she had made up her own mind beforehand what she wanted to say about each, and wasn't going to be perturbed by a little matter like what the passage actually said. For example:

* Sarah is held up as a great woman of faith--despite her laughing at God's promise and seeking her own way to fulfil the promise. Three chapters extol her virtues as an example of faith.

* Miriam likewise is held up as a great example of a godly woman, despite the bulk of what scripture tells us about Miriam relating to her pity-party and grumbling in Numbers 12. Her sin is noted, but only as a closing part of the chapter.

* Esther is held up as an example of faith in difficult circumstances. We are told to seek advice as Esther sought Mordecai's advice in 4:12. But Esther wasn't seeking advice but was being told in no uncertain terms that she needed to act in faith, or she would lose her life. Rather than being an example of faith at that moment she is an example of how not to act.

These examples and others make it look to me as if she is coming, at least mentally, to scripture with her chapter already written, and simply looking for a character to hang it on. The saving grace is that her message is sufficiently biblical, albeit from other parts of the Bible, so that the reader isn't carried away into error.

The problem is that it gives the reader imbalanced impressions of these characters and, more dangerously, a poor example of how to interact with scripture. Instead of teaching us to mine the passage for truth--it being far more helpful to see the error Sarah makes in allowing her circumstances to overshadow the promises of God--it teaches us to superficially read a passage and see in it what we want to see.

Apart from the lack of grounding in the passage one of the other weaknesses was that it simply wasn't very deep--lots of simple biblical common sense, but no real depth, and at times not terribly grounded in reality. Part of the problem was that I was also reading "Legacy of Faith" by Lydia Brownback, a book dealing with many of the same female characters. It was rich, provocative, dealt with the passages superbly (in most cases) and got down into the nitty-gritty layers of the heart. Against such competition Elizabeth George fared rather poorly.

In short - its not so bad as to deserve 1 star, but it's shallow enough to be avoided. ... Read more
