MISUNDERSTANDING OF BYZANTIUM
Historians agree today that this book is responsible for the modern misunderstanding of Byzantium. Think of only what the labeling "Byzantine" means today. If you want to know more about Byzantium start with one of the books on the empire by Sir Steven Runciman.

One of the best history books ever written
I wish I could do a review of the full Fall and Decline of the Roman Empire, but this is the version that I read and I can only review the abridged version.

First - the Gibbons is amazing. It is rare thathistorians are also great writers. Usually a historian is so enamored withhis subject manner that he or she feels that the reader will be just asenamored and will write in a very dry and academic tone. Gibbons is writinga story and his turns of phrases and style are part of it. Constantine,Diocletian, Commodus and Muhammed are brought to life in full color andpassions. There are so many reversals of fortune and plot twists in thisbook that you feel like punching out the boring history teacher in yourpast that turned you off to studying history (especially those idiots tahtedit the textbooks) and embracing the history teachers and books that leadyou to read this book.

As for the abridgement. It's not terrible. THereare some problems, like the fact that it seems in a hurry to finish off thelast stretch. After the first volume is finished the second volume only hasa few excerpts. After 800 pages you might feel like you've read enough, butyou will be wanting more after you're done with the book. Then again, youwill read this book again after you are done with it and you will read itunabridged, so it's not so bad that the abridged version leaves you wantingmore. ... Read more
