5-0 out of 5 stars More greatness...
After reading 'The Prophet' and 'Sand & Foam' I thought I'd carry on my ramblings through the mind of Gibran. 'The Madman' is as good as the previous two mentioned and is , again, full of great insights and revelations - another must read from Gibran on the White Crow inprint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soulful
I bought this for my son who loves the works of Gibran. He refers to the book often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calming and Peaceful Reading
Like all Gibran's writings, The Madman puts the mind in a peaceful and tranquil state.
The Madman is a collection of 35 short moral stories and poetry that tell the tale of an individual who had all his self-imposed illusions and artificial faces stripped from him, leaving him just with the truth of his life, his observations and his surroundings. It shows the irony of sanity and it's status as a social construct.

This book is very short (only around 71 pages, depending on your edition) and can be read very quickly. This is useful, because I've found I wanted to read it several times over. It's especially great for plane rides or any other situation in which you might find yourself harried or stressed with things beyond your control.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magical
Not as much depth as "The Prophet", but little morsels of insight to chew on throughout the day. It's a book to feel and experience its effects in your soul, not intellectually mastered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This is a collection of short parables ranging in length from a single paragraph to a few pages. They are individualist in nature and center around a single soul's dealings with the world around it.Notions of truth and being are communicated in that soul's interactions with God, friends, neighbors, strangers, animals and itself. It is quite possibly the most perfect writing I have ever read.

Fans of prose should enjoy Gibran's style immensely.I prefer it to the general colloquial style of writing and it is more expressive than similar styles of essay and short story writing.Gibran also has several other books, in addition to "The Prophet," that are worthy of reading.I own "The Madman,
"The Voice of the Master," and "Sand and Foam."This one is my favorite. It is an astoundingly eloquent, but still clear and expressive collection of writing on the most fundamentally important of all topics.

There are very few human beings capable of rivaling scripture in the emotions that their writings invoke.Kahlil Gibran was one of them. ... Read more

In a distant, timeless place, a mysterious prophet walks the sands. At the moment of his departure, he wishes to offer the people gifts but possesses nothing. The people gather round, each asks a question of the heart, and the man's wisdom is his gift. It is Gibran's gift to us, as well, for Gibran's prophet is rivaled in his wisdom only by the founders of the world's great religions. On the most basic topics--marriage, children, friendship, work, pleasure--his words have a power and lucidity that in another era would surely have provoked the description "divinely inspired." 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any bookshelf
Not to be bossy, but EVERYONE should own a copy of Gibran's "The Prophet."Divided up into sections, ranging from "Joy and Sorrow" to "Death" to "Love" to "Crime and Punishment", this book is a one-stop-shop for all that we encounter on this journey we call life.Although it may take reading it a time or two to digest and truly understand Gibran's words, the message that he delivers resonates and strikes a cord with every single person with which I have shared this masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'The Prophet,' Kahlil Gibran's masterpiece
"Almustafa, the chosen and the beloved, who was a dawn onto his own day, had waited twelve years in the city of Orphalese for his ship that was to return and bear him back to the isle of his birth."

This sentence opens one of the most famous books in human history. Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" was published in 1923 and has sold more than 100 million copies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Tool in gaining insight to spirit
This book takes different themes such as work, love, etc. and poses them as questions that a community asks a wise man, who seems to be spirit talking. He is a man who is not so much of a religious base but more filled with a love of nature finding peace and depth through sensory and embracement of all dark and light. He is a person who has freedom in all areas of his life and learns from all things and all moments because of his openess and aliveness. He wants all people to gain awareness from their path thru eternity. This can be read in a variety of ways coming from each person's belief system. I read this when I was in a state of loss, loss of so much. This book can bring understanding and a shift in consciousness at least for a spell of time. It can expand who you are while you process and integrate his writings. I most definately recommend this book, for all people on their journey in whatever space they are in on their path of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ONE
If you only read one book in your life twice .... make it this one. After you read it twice you ** may ** begin to realize how much understanding about life has somehow escaped you along your path to finally reading it.There is a lot packed into the mere 80 or so pages of this book which most people die and never understand, go ahead and give it a try. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Darker Gibran
I'm stuck in the first few chapters of this collection. It is much darker compared to the immediately uplifiting through positive insight book, The Prophet. It is however still filled with Gibran's signature wisdom just in a slow and gloomy kind of way.It is a must have for any Gibran lover just be prepared.

Product Description
(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed)

For the first time, all the major works of this beloved writer are gathered together in one hardcover volume.

Poet, artist, and mystic, Kahlil Gibran was born in 1883 to a poor Christian family in Lebanon and immigrated to the United States as an adolescent. His masterpiece, The Prophet, a book of poetic essays that he began while still a youth in Lebanon, is one of the most cherished books of our time and has sold millions of copies in more than twenty languages since its publication in 1923. But all of Gibran’s works—essays, stories, parables, and prose poems—are imbued with equally powerful simplicity and wisdom, whether they are addressing marriage or children, friendship or grief, work or pleasure. Perhaps no other twentieth-century writer has touched the hearts and minds of so remarkably varied and widespread a readership.

Included in this volume are The Prophet, The Wanderer, Jesus the Son of Man, A Tear and a Smile, Spirits Rebellious, Nymphs of the Valley, Prose Poems, The Garden of the Prophet, The Earth Gods, Sand and Foam, The Forerunner, and The Madman. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent author, excellent book.
A favorite author of mine, for those who want the best introduction to his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars "He who listens to truth is not less than he who utters truth."
"The Collected Works" is a compilation of many of Khalil Gibran's most prolific works.Contained herein:

The Madman
The Forerunner
The Prophet
Sand and Foam
Jesus the Son of Man
Earth Gods
The Wanderer
The Garden of the Prophet
Prose Poems
Spirits Rebellious
Nymphs of the Valley
A Tear and a Smile

I am particularly fond of "Sand and Foam", which is a book of aphorisms, and "Jesus the Son of Man", which is a book filled with stories from the perspective of people in Jesus' life.

I chanced upon this book while browsing the "Poetry" section at a local, big-chain, bookstore. After reading the line, "I am the silver threads the gods cast down from the heights, and Nature takes me to adorn the valleys" (song of the rain), I decided that I had to own this book, even though I already owned several of the books contained within it.

When I ordered this book, I also ordered "The Forerunner", not knowing that it would be included within.I wish that someone had posted the table of contents for me, so that I wouldn't have spent the extra money.

If you love any of Khalil Gibran's writings, this book is a wonderful addition to your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars required reading for anyone with a soul
This is my favorite book of all times. I have given out copies to all of my children and most good friends. It has all of the wisdom and poetry of the Bible and other holy books threshed, sifted, ground, kneaded and baked in God's holy fire as sacred bread for the soul in need of refreshment.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read
This book was simply amazing. I actually already own it--my copy is at my mother's house in storage on the other side of the country. I've had it for about 17 years now. After telling a few work friends about the book, I came to amazon.com and ordered another copy, so that I can share it with others. I'm a book worm, an avid reader, my nose always in a book (or now, in the kindle, lol) When I say The Prophet is one of the best books I've ever read, I don't make that judgement lightly.I've read a LOT of great books... but few have touched me as deeply, caused the most profound changes in my thoughts and actions, and had such a resounding effect on my life and soul. I have not read it in about five years, and I look forward to reading it again. With every reading, another lesson is learned. The books speaks to its readers' souls. I highly recommend this book to anyone, and everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Beloved Book
A friend of mine loaned me a copy of this book years ago. I still have her copy!! I consider myself to be a very spiritual person and am constantly striving towards further enlightenment. This book challenged me in ways I hadn't realized I could be challenged and has encouragedme to grow over the years.

I'm not one to keep all the books I've ever read. This is one of the few I will never get rid of and that I share often with my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gibran's Must Read Bokk for Everyone
A few copies of this book have passed through my hand as I give copies to friends and those who I have met that need such a book.Beautifully written in a concise and poetic meter, it presents a beautiful allegory that is interlaced with perfect life lessons. No matter what religion or spiritual practice guides you, this book offers insight into living life as a whole human in the harmonious presence of others.A perfect gift and work of art that should be a part of every library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mirror
"In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond." Product Description
Written by the world's leading expert on Gibran, this profound little book will be an essential addition to any reader's Gibran collection, and a perfect Christmas and Valentine's Day alternative for those tired with collections of cliched romantic verse. Regarding it as the raison d'etre of the universe, Kahlil Gibran was never more insightful than when he wrote about love. Now for the first time, and illustrated with the poet's own paintings, his reflections on love and friendship have been gathered together in one volume, capturing the essence of love in all its forms and moods. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Quintessential Gibran, made portable
I've been a Gibran fan all my life, although as I've aged, I've come to see his works in a different way. In my younger days, it was about the beauty of the words, the phrasing, the structure...now, it's about the meaning and how it relates to the experiences of my life. Gibran is like that.

I find this particular book a good collection of Gibran's most famous Love poems, although as another reviewer suggested, it is brief and a bit narrowly focused on some of his most romantic works.

If this is to be your only Gibran, I would never recommend it...you will miss out on too much. Instead, start with The Prophet, then wind your way through Sand and Foam, Broken Wings and a few others. Think of them (or one of the collected writings) as the prerequisites that will give you the perspective to understand and appreciate this lovely book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Thoughts about Love
If you are new to Kahlil Gibran then I'd recommend you start with The Prophet. I also think you will understand Kahlil Gibran even better if you read his letters in Love Letters: The Love Letters of Kahlil Gibran to May Ziadah. He shows his heart in both books and then you will be ready to understand more of what he reveals in "The Little Book of Love."

This is a collection of quotes and prose poems from his many books. This is the third book I've read and I was not disappointed. In fact it made me all the more eager to read additional books. Once you read one book you will want to read them all. In each book Kahlil Gibran says things that are simply profound and meaningful to understanding any topic he has addressed. In this book he speaks of the love of God, country, family and friends. He also briefly touches on romantic love.

All of the quotes in this book are filled with poetic beauty. I especially enjoyed his thoughts on how the soul is not content because it desires perfection. That made me think of my life a little differently than before. I think the only thing I disagreed with is his thoughts about how love doesn't come from a long companionship. I think there is definitely room for a love to grow between two people over time.

After reading these quotes I now have numerous books on my must-read list. I think after you experience this book you will feel the same.

Hi, I have not read the book yet but it arrived on time in the condition I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that creates change.
Everyone carries an omnificent quality within themselves. Some individuals have not grasped this concept. Some individuals do not realize that a simple change can create a huge transformation.Would you ask an important figure for advice before she or he left town?Their advice would be elements about life that you already knew, but seemingly forgot. There are simple fundamentals to follow that can make you a better person within your own eyes.

Gibran uses The Prophet Almustafa to enlighten readers with simple tactics they can use to live a more pure and genuine life. How many of us love, go to work, have clothes, feel pain, and own friendships? You do not have to be religious to appreciate this book.Gibran's classic takes common stress factors that everyone can relate to, and shares guidance on how to simplify it in your life:"When you work with love, you bind yourself to yourself, and to one another" ( p. 26).Read this book and share it.Think about the most valuable portion to you in this book. Share that portion with another person.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Love calls nothing can stand in its way!

"His power came from some great reservoir of spiritual life else it could not have been so universal and so potent, but the majesty and beauty of the language with which he clothed it were all his own." -- Claude Bragdon

Kahlil Gibran, on Love:
Love was the central theme of Gibran's life which he expressed in prose poems, and drawings; "Just reading the English translation for this collection of his love-related Arabic works makes my bones ache with the amazing insights he portrays through moving language." ankh fire

"Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart,
and a song of praise upon your lips."
G. Khalil Gibran

The Beloved:
For Gibran, love was the eternal way for any human being to reach completeness, in self realization transforming their life by the power of the encounter with the beloved;
"Who among you would not cross the seas, traverse deserts,
go over mountains and valleys to reach the woman whom his spirit has chosen?
What youth would not follow his heart to the ends of the earth
to breathe the sweetness of his lover's breath, feel the soft touch of her hands,
delight in the melody of her voice?"

The Arkana Edition:
This Penguin Arkana edition of the unique selection of Gibrans writings on the mystical union in love and marriage which he dedicated to the spirit that embraced his spirit and the heart that poured its secrets into his heart, will kindle a fire in the emotions of poetry responsive readers like Ankh fire.
The introduction by Robin Waterfield is concise but eloquent and informing. The translator John Walbridge of Indiana University, who lived and studied in the Middle East introduced G. Khalil Gibran, in a nice biography analyzing his thought, and how he liberated traditional Arabic of his time, writing in a simple diction of modern new form. He compares the passion expressed in his early writings, with the its Lebanese setting and American influence. This new translation of the gifted poet's early Arabic composition is a contemporary fresh one which reflects the original text more closely.

G. Kahlil Gibran, 1883-1931:
I encountered Gibran before appreciating Arabic poetry, as a young kid I was amazed by the beauty of his art and the romance of his expression, in 'The Prophet.' Later, I read him in Arabic, before I found out how the Libanese emigrant poet has touched the Western hearts. This collection of Gibran's early stories, parables and poetic prose, were written in Arabic before his works were translated into English, earning him the nickname 'the Shelly of the Orient.' Many Arabic speaking intelligentsia, including my dad thought he has qualified to have been a Nobel Laureate!

$9.99 is far too much to charge for a single out of copyright book like this.
A collected works of Kahlil Gibran would be much fairer in this price range.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!

Product Description
Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) was a Lebanese American of Assyrian descent, an artist, poet and writer. He was born Gibran Khalil Gibran in Lebanon (at the time a Syrian Province of the Ottoman Empire) and spent much of his productive life in the United States. While most of Gibran's early writings were in Syriac and Arabic, most of his work published after 1918 was in English. Gibran also took part in the New York Pen League, also known as the "immigrant poets" (al-mahjar), alongside other important Lebanese American authors such as Ameen Rihani ("the father of Lebanese American literature"), Mikhail Naimy and Elia Abu Madi. Gibran's best-known work is The Prophet, a book composed of 26 poetic essays, first written in English in 1923. The Prophet remains famous to this day, having been translated into more than 20 languages. Other works in English include: Spirits Rebellious, (1908), The Broken Wings (1912), A Tear and a Smile (1914), The Forerunner (1920), Sand and Foam (1926), Jesus the Son of Man (1928), The Earth Gods (1929), The Wanderer (1932) and The Garden of the Prophet (1933). ... Vague enough to enfuse with personal meaning. Meaningless read hard, and broad read softly. A good book if you want to sway in the romantic waters of an indefinite God, but hardly the work to peak behind the curtain. It studies the fabric. Full of delicious quotes, irresistable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kahlil Gibran Does It Again!
Kahlil Gibran is a very powerful, dynamic writer. He does it brilliantly each time a book goes live.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
Gibran continues to inspire me in this book. It is written from the depths of his soul and from every beat of his heart, as every one of his works are. Some readers criticize his writings becasue they say it is "too hard to understand".This is a complement to Gibran, because the most precious things in life are not supposed to be easily understood. One must read his books and reflect the meaning into their own lives in order to even began to understand. Don't be afriad to challenge yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry is wisdom that enchants the heart............
Wisdom is poetry that sings in the mind. If we could enchant man's heart and at the same time sing in his mind, Then in truth he would live in the shadow of God.

The quotes from "SAND AND FOAM" enhances thethought process and I find better understanding of the people around me.

Our god exists in ourself. It takes thought provoking book to make usaware.

4-0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric!
it is so wonderful to read a book by a man who is not a christian in the literal sense of the word and yet so much a true christian in the spirit of things. this book was absolutely beautiful. i am very very sparing with my stars, but i have given this book four because it is absolutley beautiful... loved it so much i even gave my dad a copy. he enjoyed it too.

i guess that its in reading books such as this that ones belief in humanity is really boosted. a wonderful book. i do love Jesus and Gibran, clearly does too, though not a "Christian". this man does great honour to the name of Christ in writing this book.

i guess that in the Christian walk, a time comes where one begins to think and feel the importance of humanity... the importance of being one of the people, not just one of the material church... the value of love and openess to all men and women, whether 'good' or 'bad'. what has become a closed book, begins again to open up too all people, and ones faith moves downwards from the head and into the heart. (not always easy). its so easy to let life and culture, or experience to harden oneself towards others, especially people like 'publicans', 'prostitutes' and sinners and yet we are reminded in this book that jesus was a dear friend and lover of such people regardless of the spiritual pain they must have caused him.

this book portrays jesus as a true human, his humanity is what makes him so beautiful and the people he meets. sorrows, joys, pains, love, attraction, attachments, anger, deep caring... all the things that make us thoroughly human are found in Gibrans portrayal of jesus.

i have spoken with two or three people about the hardness of the western heart. people come from countries where emotionality is profoundly important and often find a lack of this in the west, but religious paths can also root out the delicate flowers of emotionality and caring too.
this book is full of emotion and atmosphere. it is my own prayer that i will share intense emotion with those that i love. sorrow with the sad, joy with the happy. bring back emotions!

i love this book!

Jesus the son of man, Gibran the friend/lover of Jesus.

love, flakey. xxx

4-0 out of 5 stars 360 Degrees of Jesus
Gibran's reputation as a poet and profound thinker is confirmed in this book.

He employs history, Biblical text and his imagination to conjure 'interviews' with folks who may have been intimate with Jesus or affected by His presence from a distance.

His insight is exceptionally believable and he takes you on a journey that is both mystical and practical with the varying points of view. The positives are for believers primarily, and one will be filled with a sense of awe and intimacy toward Jesus. Nevertheless the voice of skeptics is heard, though in the minority, but it is given due attention.

The downside may be for those who are not so poetically inclined. Khalil's voice through those who admire Jesus is extremely metaphoric and it may be lost on those who need a more 'down to earth' description of feelings, emotions and attitudes. I felt at times that the discourses were perhaps too symbolic, though one understood the implication of the experience of encountering Jesus as beyond words.

In the end one is left understanding Jesus' impact more but hungering to know Him in a way that is more understandable than the sometimes amorphous descriptions by Gibran's characters. The interviews are fairly short and this makes it a manageable read for the most 'unbookish' of us.

All the same a great read and a classic anyone should have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant expression of poetry!
The writings of Kahlil Gibran in this book have inspired enlightenment. The documentary of Jesus is seen through the eyes and ears of the peoples who lived alongside him. There are negative, positive and indifferent opinions of his being which provokes the imagination and faith. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Arrogance and neglect in translation
Before I purchased this book I would like to have known that the translator was not up to the task. El Profeta/the Prophet (Alba) is a translation of Kahil (Jalil) Gibrán's wonderful book The Prophet. The original is not under review here but the translation. The quality of the translation, sometimes reasonable, is often not good:
Gibran often repeats a phrase and the translator has deemed it necessary to change this by changing the language for the repeat, thus disturbing the rhythm and the simplicity (Say not... Say not ... Say rather becomes No digías... Tampoco digías... Decid, sin embargo...).
Sometimes words are not even understood - longing is translated as something to do with a long time (longing equals long). This is in De las casas - ...nor shelter your longing becomes por mucho tiempo.
On one occasion a whole paragraph of the original is omitted in the translation (In De la razón y de la pasión).
Plural words (of the days and the nights) are translated in the singular (del día y de la noche); (the songs and the silences of night) becomes (la música y el silencio de la noche).
'That which you have always known in thought' is translated as 'lo que ya sabías desde un principio.'
'Dreams' are translated as 'fantasía'.
In De la Alegría y de la tristeza, Joy and Sorrow are described in the original English as 'inseperable'. Mr. Cruz Martínez has translated this with 'insuperables'.
The book ispeppered with triple asterisks to divide each section into subsections. Why? those subdivisions are not in the original. And the pictures are in the wrong places.
Why all this? Why treat such a wonderful book with such arrogance and superficiality? On the back of the book is written: ... las obras, con frecuencia maltradas, de Jalil Gibrán. ...and now again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prosa Poetica
No es solo mi favorito sino tambien uno de los mas bellos libros que he leido hasta ahora,Kahlil Gibran con magnifica destreza y una sensibilidad incomparables sabe llegar a la escencia de la sabiduria;el corazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will Remain With You Forever!
I was fortunate to read Dr. Carlos Seguin's translation (Peru). He added a chapter to his Spanish language translation: About the Good Bye. He said there is no real good bye, like the river that passes through... its waterremains on the land or the trees it touches. In the same way, this book andits wonderful teaching will never leave you.. they will remain with you andbe part of your life. You will never say good bye to The Prophet, histeachings will be with you forever. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Review for the Dodo edition NOT the book which is a 5 star!
This Dodo Press edition is appalling. Unfortunately there has been no proof reading done whatsoever and so the book is laden with typos and errors:

'se' instead of 'she', 'by' instead of 'but', 'pong' instead of 'pond'!!! Whole words are missing, capitals missing, punctuation missing... and this on every page.

That said, Gibran is a beautiful writer, I have read this book a long time ago and wanted to read it again, it is very moving, very loving. I love all of Gibran's books that I have read so far. I will buy a different edition as this one was terrible and does not do the book justice.

I wish Amazon would figure out a way to review books and editions separately...

5-0 out of 5 stars Broken Wings ~by:Kahlil Gibran
I felt the book was pretty much in the condition that it was listed in and arrived very quickly. It is a beautiful book and I am very happy to have made the purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Heartbreaking, Astonishingly beautiful
10 years after my initial review, this book still resonates. The Broken Wings is a wildly hyptotic love story that will carve a special scar within the depths of your heart.Kahlil Gibran is a maestro of lyrical writing. His pieces are timeless. The Broken Wings should be a requirement for any student of philosophy, love, life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful!
Calling Kahlil Gibran a poet is an understatement and this short story proves it. It is a simple story but one that will break your heart. Still, you will be glad you read it...(experienced it rather)! It will take you to another world, another era, stimulate your mind and touch your heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure love
This is the third book I read by Gibran.I started with "The Prophet" and "Voice of the Master"."Broken Wings" is the first novel I read by this author. It is a love story between two young people at the tender age of 18 that meet and establish spiritual connection between each other immediately. The girl, Selma is raised by her wealthy widower father, who in spite of his wealth seems to be ignorant of the way the world works. The young man, our narrator, is somewhat of a dreamer and idealist who believes that patience and perseverance will grant him the hand of the woman he loves (Selma). But world, being the cruel place that it is has different plans.Everyone pure and true ends up being hurt in the process, only the cruel and greedy get to go on with their lives as if nothing happened.Beautiful story beautifully told and wise as only Gibran can make it so. ...
