Classic Autobiography, boring anyway
Goethe is a bit like broccoli--one should like him better than one actually does.Goethe goes to great lengths to credit everyone who helped him become the most important German author ever. It moves at a very slowpace.It also is somewhat self-deceptive and misleading, as it ends whenGoethe was in his late 20's.In order to get a more accurate view ofGoethe's life, Dichtung and Wahrheit is best read in conjunction with atraditional biography.Goethe's autobiography appears in 4 parts, and thisvolume consists of the first 3, which were written earlier, and it is morethorough than the 4th part that appears in volume 5 of this series.Anyoneseriously interested in studying autobiography as a genre should read it,even if it is slow going. ... Lush translation
One of the biggest problems with translating poetry is losing the intensity and feeling of the original work. That doesn't seem to be a problem with John Whaley's translation of "Selected Poems," a lush collection of all kinds of poetry by Goethe.

The full range of Goethe's talent is shown here. There are stately poems like "Roman Elegies" ("So diverse are the arrows of Amor; mine are not insolent thoughts...") and the "Metamorphosis Of Plants." On the otherhand, Goethe wrote little ditties like "Untitled - From Egmont" ("Glad heart/and sad heart...") or the four-line "Whatever You Think Truth or Fable."

As a bonus for the bilingual, Whaley includes both the original German and the English translation. His translation seems like a pretty solid one. He preserves the rhyme and rhythm of the original poems, without making them dull. He also includes some basic biographical info that make the poems more relevant. Some of his translations are a little weird ("Are there not nicer rewards touching the sensitive hearts?"), but overall he's done a good job.

And what of Goethe? This collection of various poems does an excellent job of showing just what a good poet he was. There are poems of all types: long, short, funny, melancholy, complex and stately, or simple and whimsical. There are special emphasis on nature and love, but also poems devoted to a poet Goethe admired, and also on little observations like a dying fly.

The solid translation makes Goethe's "Selected Poems" blossom as they should. A vivid, vibrant collection of deservedly classic poetry, and a must-read. ... Read more
