4-0 out of 5 stars Really cool book
Although you messed up on the timelines, ancient Egypt is a relatively good book.it engrossed me in bed time reading and has accurate and interesting data, information, and facts.

3-0 out of 5 stars for children, this book might have been better presented
Divided in two parts, this book chronicles the civilization of Ancient Egypt. The first part focuses on the history of Egypt from the earliesttimes to the Roman period. The second part takes the reader along thecountry and provides a detailed map of each region. The book fails as anatlas : the author provides too much information about the various aspectsof the Egyptian daily life and society, and the maps have no stability.Offering a helpful glossary, this book, for children ages 9 to 12, has manyillustrations regarding the Egyptian civilization. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfection of the Heroic Quest
The world is a strange and perverse thing. An author whose work is worthy to stand with that of Tolkien and Lewis is relegated to the out-of-print section, a series unsurpassed in modern fantasy-world literature is knownonly to a small, scattered segment of the population.

It deserves farbetter. The 'heroic quest' structure reaches a high point with thisseries.Like Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" it is one story inmany books- each books having its own beauties and terrors while buildingtoward a clear, cohesive, unified story. It is a circular quest (asopposed to the linear sort) that is the hero returns to his place oforigin. But in the compass of that circle is a magnificently conceivedworld, with its people, places, languages, and sights all completelyrealized. It is a world with its own history and its own mysterious past, the story of the origin of the world, of the relationship between man andthe gods interwoven with and blending into Kerish-lo-Taan's quest for theseven keys.

With such a world and such a quest to keep track of, anylesser author could have let character be completely ignored and stillproduced a cracking good story. But it takes genius to allow eachcharacter a self which grows and changes and adds to rather than distractsfrom the action.

Those characters are the essential ones of the HeroicQuest- Hero, Heroine, subordinate or co-Hero, and the Servant. In heroicquests from "Star Wars" to "The Lord of the Rings",this group or a slight variation on it, appears. And as in "StarWars", the co-Hero falls in love with the Heroine, as in "TheLord of the Rings" the Hero and the Servant near the end of the questalone.

As if to be exemplary both in character and action were notenough, Seven Citadels is deep enough thematically to quench the thirst ofeven a devout C.S. Lewis fan.Seamlessly integrated- nay, an essential andinseperable part- of the narrative, these deeper themes run through thebook, most mysterious where they are clearest to be seen, neverdegenerating into crude philosophising or moral-pointing, but retainingthat mysteriously evocative sense not so well expressed since Lewis's"Till We Have Faces". The combination of character, theme, action essential in any good book but so critical in good fantasyliterature combine to render the series a masterpiece- a forgotten one, buta masterpiece nonetheless. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars wonder why it was never reprinted
This is a suprisingly good series, though each of the four books is a short 200ish pages and could have just been sold as one 800ish page doorstopper in the current style.

It is aboutafascinating central and ancient empire, the rulers of which are descended from gods, but have fallen into decadence. The empire itself is threatened by barbarians who have recently united.

The story focuses on half brothers, their relationship and personal growth, and their quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy that could save the empire.

The world Harris has created is particularly interesting.

I wonder why this was never reprinted, as it appears there are no copies available past the early 80's edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Magic
This novel was full of all sorts of magic.Through the use of her skills of describing Mrs. Harris brings to life a world of magic, adventure, and action. I can tell that this is the first in a line of spectacullar novels.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Hidden Treasure of a Novel!
I hadn't heard of Geraldine Harris when I found volume three of this series in a Lexington bookstore. The title impressed me, however-The Dead Kingdom, and I bought the book based on a nice comment printed on the dust jacket. Over the next couple of years I accessed the internet and scoured stores for the other three installments by Harris. They proved elusive, or available but expensive buys on the net in those days. Persistence pays, however, and I found them. I began reading with the first volume, this book: A Prince of the Godborn. Godborn sets up the story, filling us in on Harris's world, providing an image of the main character, the godborn prince of a besieged kingdom. It seems some neighboring warrior tribes are threatening attack, and the Prince of the Godborn must act heroically, undertaking a quest that'll by no means be easy: to recover the keys to 7 ominous citadels, scattered pell-mell across Harris's landscape. The quest expands across the four books, the Prince encountering the kingdoms and citadels one by one, until the final, sobering encounter, as he ascends the enigmatic seventh citadel. FYI- The four books that tell this story are the following: A Prince of the Godborn, The Children of the Wind, The Dead Kingdom, and the Seventh Gate. A great series in my estimation, and a story I completed in back-to-back readings of the four books.

5-0 out of 5 stars It begins........
Kerish-lo-Taan, third prince of the emperor, and one of the Godborn, has been chosen to fulfill the ancient prophecy of releasing the savior of Galkis. Seven keys held by seven sorcerers will unlock the seven gates imprisoning him. With the five kingdoms of the south united, and corruption within Galkis, it seems hopeless. With the help of his half brother, Forollkin the warrior, can the seemingly frail and childish Kerish complete his destiny?

5-0 out of 5 stars Prince of the Godborn
I read the series of four books when an impressionable teen. They stuck with me for a very long time.My mum and I used to discuss who would play the titles roles as surely they would make a movie out of this fantastic series of books.Prince Kerish touched me in ways other books couldn't, you read, entranced as he turned from a spoilt boy into a man. There are still scenes I can relive in my head now.My particular favorite is Lihlanee the marsh cat, rescuing the prince as they enter the Dead Kingdom, so sad I cried. As others have written, the books are far too complex to explain easily. It took me some years to track them down too.I even used the books as a basis for my English exams! You have to read these books! ... Product Description
Ten-year-old David Green thinks his new pet is a nice, normal goldfish—until the bossy, outspoken little Whirly Fish pops out of the fish bowl and introduces himself! He tells David that a Whirly Fish comes along every three million years. He can speak on a zither wave, whirl through the air like a golden pinwheel and weigh problems on his flashing orange scales. The Whirly Fish wants to be where the action is, so he schemes and whines to tag along with David—to school, to a fancy dinner party with the neighbors, and to the park pond during David’s Little League game. But every time David gives in, the Whirly Fish’s hilarious antics and wild escapades cause nothing but trouble. When the Whirly Fish becomes the father of 6,892 baby goldfish, he must figure a way to get them to the park pond before David can sell them to Mr. Tidbinkle for his pet shop aquarium. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun and easy to read story!
Ten-year-old David Green gets a big surprise when he buys a goldfish from Mr. Tidbinkle's Pet Shop. His fish is not an ordinary fish. He is a Whirly Fish unlike any fish David has heard of! He can whirl through the air, speak to David, and calculate problems on his flashing orange scales.

As the adventure begins with David and his fish, David gets into trouble at school because of his new pet. Dinner at Mrs. Podertuck's house turns out to be a mess because of the Whirly Fish and Timothy, a hungry cat. There's a girl David's age in parts of the story and he doesn't care much for girls! At a pond, the Whirly fish meets a girl fish, Angelica, and other creatures. As the story progresses, David winds-up getting his hands full because of his new pet! There are fish, snails, frogs, a cat, rabbits, a scorpion, a pelican, hummingbirds, water bugs, and others in the story.

What a fun book! It's well written from a 10-year-old's point of view. Young readers would probably find "David and the Whirly Fish" fun and easy to read. I highly recommend it! Two thumbs up! Great book Geraldine!

Product Description
Staging Femininities focuses on the work of performance artists Rose English, Bobby Baker and Annie Sprinkle in order to explicate and examine some of the most influential thinking on the politics of identity. This is one of the first books in this field to examine the productive differences as well as the useful connections between British and North American female performance traditions, between feminist theories of performance practices and, most significantly, between theatrical performance and performativity. Geraldine Harris offers a number of readings on the ways that identity is staged. Undertaking a series of "double movements" she brings together concepts from theorists and critics that include Judith Butler, Susan Bordo, Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, Joan Riviere, Jean Baudrillard, Jacques Lacan, Michel de Certeau, Luce Irigaray, Bertold Brecht, Antonin Artaud and Eleanor Fuchs.

Product Description

Beyond Representation poses the question as to whether over the last thirty years there have been signs of Â'progress' or 'progressiveness' in the representation of Â'marginalised' or subaltern identity categories within television drama in Britain and the US. In doing so, it interrogates some of the key assumptions concerning the relationship between aesthetics and the politics of identity that have influenced and informed television drama criticism during this period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt
Accessible three ways: through the index, through keywords in boldface type, or through alphabetic browsing, it also is organized into "trails" one can follow to discover information about a particular topic, e.g. work or everyday life. Uneven coverage, for example, under the entry for Nile, all that is written is "the main river of Egypt". However, the entry for Hieroglyphs and writing is 2 pages long. Notwithstanding, there is still much information of value, especially regarding Egyptian gods. Author lectures at Oxford University. ... Read more

I happened accross this series by accident, but am so glad that I did! This was the final chapter in a wonderful series that I will read over and over again. The characters are so real, and the story spectacullar. You will be amazed at how vivid the author makes the landscapes. This is a real treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY FOUND, AND SOON COMPLETE!!!!!!!!!!
This four volume masterpiece is the pinnicle series of my collection. However, up until about three years ago, the author and series were all but unheard of. I have spent about ten or so years now looking, (conventions as well as new and favorite used bookstores) and now, finally, my collection is in its entirety (1st Ed. hardcover as well as paperback ;). The paperback cover-art is excellent (hardcover not nearly as good)! The 1st book, (Prince of the Godborn) begins a little slow, however sets the series up nicely. I was left of at the end of "Children of the Wind" for about eleven years now, so, as you can imagine, my anticipation for the end two books is great! If this series, reading just two of the four books, can leave me on the edge of my seat wanting more for eleven years, well then........ Draw your own conclusion!!! ... Read more
